You brought out a device that's so outdated that it's too old already before it's even released. Look at the size of that stylus...it's huge and it's mandatory that you use it. I was even willing to spend $100 more than the Nook on it. Then the Nook gets announced at $259, and this thing increases to $449. No way I can justify paying $200 more for it.

For those that think the Nook is "better" keep in mind that the Nook has a much smaller screen and is more difficult to annotate without a stylus. This thing is designed for people who like to open big PDFs and/or scribble on the page. I do a lot of proofreading and have been eager to get away from the PC and go to a reader to do it. Kindle is lousy at selecting stuff, the Sony reader touch screen adds way to much glare, and the Nook is questionable at this point how well it will allow for annotations. This thing was what I was hoping for. The Wacom digitizer (thus the huge stylus) is under the e-ink screen so not only is it accurate, but does not cause glare. Books can be read, and the system navigated without the stylus (admittedly clunky without it), but it is not like you would need the stylus out at all times. Plus fancier wacom pens are available aftermarket.

I guess I am just still hoping it was a horrible mistake and they meant to drop it to $349

RandomGuy

Comments on IREX 8.1-inch DR 800SG e-reader now listed at Best Buy for $449

Unfortunately, this won't have any annotation support at launch, that's coming later in an update supposedly. The screen is more than 2 inches larger, but that is due to the lack of a keyboard or touchscreen underneath. Overall I don't have a problem with increasing the size of the screen on a device without making the outside dimensions significantly larger.

Oh and the flash is annoying, but pretty much all e-ink does it. I figure I can just apply an old trick when I was a welder in college. I used an LCD glass welding helmet that would auto-tint when it detected the flash. This was back in the early 90s so there was a bit of a delay, just a fraction of a second, but enough to burn your retinas after a couple hundred times per day. Anyway, I just learned to blink at the exact moment I pulled the trigger. Got to be second nature and effortless. I suppose I will try to do the same for the eReader. It has a Wacom pen, which is most likely pressure sensitive. You have to realize that the Irex has about the same overall dimensions as the Kindle or the Nook, but with 182% of the screen area. Almost the double. High price, no WACOM at this time... basically an ebook reader with 3G and WIFI. The Barnes and Noble connectivity is nice... but for $250.00 more than the Barnes and Noble device? And just a promise of note-taking in the "future"? Not this guy... not yet. I have an Iliad and a Kindle. I much prefer the Iliad for the bigger screen - BUT, IREX abandoned the Iliad quite early on. Who's to say the same thing won't happen with the new 800SG if the sales don't meet expectations? By Christmas, there will be lots of choices out there, and as Andras Soltesz says, the eDGe device is intriguing. My advice? Keep what you have for now. If you have nothing and HAVE to have an ebook reader now, go for the Barnes and Noble.

James Boardman

Comments on IREX 8.1-inch DR 800SG e-reader now listed at Best Buy for $449

It does have the Wacom digitizer hardware built in.
