I just dislike having a smartphone and not being able to get full OS updates for 1-2 years after the purchase of the phone. I know that it's very difficult for a company to put resources aside for all these phone models, so I wouldn't mind paying $10 every 6 months for a full OS update. But having Hero with Android v1.5 right now is just unacceptable to me, because there are features from the v1.6 that I want. And this is supposed to be a smartphone, not a dumbphone that's not upgradeable. And no, it's not Google's OR the community's job to provide ROMs, I want an official HTC release. With updated versions of the HTC Sense UI too. And I am willing to pay for it a sensible price to get it. If HTC finds that too difficult to do, maybe then they should stop creating a gazillion of models every year. Instead, only offer about 3-5 models maximum, but provide GOOD support for them in terms of HTC-official firmware updates.

That's my personal opinion on the matter as a gadget user.

Eugenia Loli-Queru

Comments on Sense UI update for HTC Magic makes the scene in Taiwan

I have an Hero too (european version) and I can't understand what you're talking about.
Android 1.5 is the latest available , since 1.6 (eclair) is still being developed, once it will be released you will surely be able to update your handset.
I have also a N97 and an HTC TouchHD (my HD2 should arrive nov 1st) and have had iPhone 3GS and Samsung Omnia (i900) but I think Android is by far the best OS, as long as it's paired with SenseUI and as long as all the fabolous free apps on Android market remain free.
Talking of which: in the pics I can see that this version of Android has been slightly changed Improved?), and I wonder if european phones will be given the possibility to update too.
The only thing that the Hero misses to be a perfect smartphone is voice dialing and a sscreen big enough to be used for sat nav while driving; and these are also the reasons why I preordered the HD2 and why I hope that the Sholes will reach the european shores.
Add these couple of things and as far as I am concerned the Hero is just about perfect.

Plexus

Plexus

Comments on Sense UI update for HTC Magic makes the scene in Taiwan

@Plexus

1) Android 1.6 is called Donut and it's already been released and pushed out to most devices running stock Android (both G1 and Magic have had the update for over a month in the US)

2) Android has built-in Voice Dialing, you just hold down the Call button for five seconds and it pops up.

3) I've been using my HTC Magic as my primary satnav device for several months now and the screen is plenty big enough.
