LG's transparent 15-inch AMOLED display is amazing, possibly useless
Look at that, just look at it will you. It's another in a latest trend that's bringing transparent displays to consumer electronics. However, this pup is in color and livin' large at 15-inches unlike those tiny transparent displays we've seen in handsets. Unfortunately, all we can do is look for the moment because the concept on show at FPD 2009 in Japan is accompanied by very little in the way of detail.

Wow.
Nope, it's just Windows XP running there...
The first thing I thoght of when I saw that was the red dot sight... Too much modern warfare :(
LCD calculator.... meh, but AMOLED calculator rocks the socks!!
I don't get it.
Just imagine, that'd be great to have it shove in a paire of glasses with AR applications, instead of having these: http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/26/brother-nec-look-to-invade-your-retinas-next-year/ ...
Its just a prototype. When its done, it will come in life-sized versions which you put in front of your wife and it displays Jenna Haze while your having sex.
@ Kurian
hilarious ;)
Shoot porn against a black background and playing it back on this makes it seem like they are doing it on your desk.
Just helping out.
I can see ads coming out :
"Sharing Confidential data never has been easier...."
"Your wife knows what you doing.."
New from 3M Semi-Transparent Privacy Filters for Transparent screens! Now nobody at the airport will know if your watching porn or just a graphic heavy Powerpoint presentation while waiting for your flight.
I think if CSI Miami has taught us one thing, it's that transparent monitors are the future. You just need to mount this in the back of your Hummer so you can check DNA.
Make me a windshield like this with augmented reality for driving. Now!
A windshield that shows you the directions as if it were on the road itself. Thats innovation, kudos to whatever company comes up with this the first.
i second that, although it'd be years before it even came out on anything I could afford lol.
Sounds...distracting.
Give me one that makes fat women appear attractive on the road as well and it just might make my daily commutes that much better.
If it filled your entire windscreen it would bring a whole new meaning to "blue screen of DEATH" :P
You could put these in normal windows as well, and depending how much light they could emmit they could be used as "lights" at night that could simulate daytime by showing a bright day-time picture of the outside. I can see a lot of uses for this tech outside of pc monitors.
Nothing wrong with a bit of virtual GTA, mowing down pedestrians.
This is what i have been waiting for. Put it in my windshield and Ill be happy. AR turn by turn driving!!! It'll be like a real Gran Turismo!!!
Lexus has done this.
http://lexusenthusiast.com/2009/01/20/lexus-2010-rx-heads-up-display-hud/
BOOMER!!! ... no no.. wait, that's just my coffee mug.
so very cool, now... all they need to do is make it so that when you are looking at it on one side, it is readable, and when your coworker is on the other side it is also readable... PUSH THE LIMITS!
For when you want everyone to see your pr0n collection.
Put this on my:
- Mirrors
- Windows
- Windshield
- Wall (with no edges so you don't know it's there)
Other than that it's pretty useless. I'll stick with displays that I can see in full daylight.
and in the finder of my digital camera...
If it used the alpha or another channel to determine transparency -- instead of black -- it would probably be much more useful.
I think that's impossible. The thing is always the same amount of transparentness --- but sometimes some parts emit light. The problem is: how do you emit black light? You'd have to make it so it can not only emit light, but block it as well.
I suppose you could maybe do that by combining it with a traditional LCD screen, but that's not what they've done.
If they put a LCD (just the display, not backlight etc - like in active shutter glasses) behind it it'd be possible to adjust the transparency of the screeen. You could make it opaque so it'd be just as readable as a normal screen, or leave parts of it transparent.
At last we can get bezel-less screens!
I bet this technology will be used for portable gaming soon. :D
I think this would be nice if it could give off more light and you used a larger, high-contrast UI on it (and didn't need to use it for something private). Hell, throw LCARS on there, you know you want to.
Completly useless. Looks great in a movie, but completely impracticle in reality. All this Minority report hunger is just stupid. I don't want to be distracted by people walking behind my emails or spend an hour working with my arms stretched out in front of me.
can you use it as a projector just by shining a bright light through it? that would be quite cool. But that's also the only reason i can think of for wanting one of these. I imagine you get tired of it soon.
The screen itself emits light. What you're suggesting is possible with a LCD display with removed. see http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/theory/index.php
Reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euWOP895q9I or is it just the suggestion of the italicized text?
If that doesn't make Vista's and Window 7's Aero redundant I don't know what does.
Somehow new "windows" machine got lost in translation.
Actually Engadget, it's not useless. Maybe possibly as a computer display, but if applied to an area like passenger vehicles for instance, it would be very much welcome. Heads Up Displays in automobiles fell to the wayside a bit ago after showing up in a few higher end vehicles. The technology wasn't there. Now it s, or atleast getting there with this prototype display from LG and other areas such as flexible OLEDs.
Do want.....
This would be great on a smartphone with a solar panel behind it
that's actually a very good idea! Self-powered displays with no real estate loss for a separate solar panel.
@ Kurian
lol :)
no one mentioned stargate atlantis? engadget readers just aren't nerdy/geeky enough.
Don't forget the transparent computer tv from cowboy bebop.
If it were touch screen, it could be used to make some pretty sweet futuristic looking interfaces!!
funny how people say things like this are useless even though these products are mere prototypes/concepts that still have a lot of work done to them. If you ask me, it sounds like some people are just ass-pained losers.
grow up children
But if I replace my bathroom window with one of these, so I can check the weather forecast and my stocks and my e-mail (and maybe browse some images...) in between getting naked for the shower and getting clothed after the shower, will it have an anti-fog coating?
Or is it better suited to one of my cabinet doors as a recipe guide?
getting closer to the minority report screen.
Would something like this work laid over a e-ink display to give you a best of both worlds tablet?
That should be possible. Turn the e-ink black and you can use the transparent OLED as a normal screen, turn the transparent OLED off and you can see the e-ink screen. It should even work for arbitrary sub-regions.
