Windows 7 receives 7,000 domino salute (video)
If 7,000 dominoes fall in a forest of cheering Microsoft employees, do they make enough noise for us to care? We don't usually tell Microsoft how to run its promotions, but a domino installation that takes a full three minutes to topple is pretty much an open invitation for "slow boot-up" jokes, and a climactic finale that revolves around a hot air balloon version of your logo crashing against a glass ceiling might also create the wrong impression. Ah well, these guys are engineers and not choreographers, after all -- you can see the fruit of their labor after the break.

At first glance, the still image looks like some sort of needlepoint project my grandmother would have taken 2 months to create... and which would have been more entertaining to watch.
+1
It takes about that long for Windows 7 to boot on machines that were running XP. Nice video though.
@Average White Boy:
Before even looking at the comments I knew some douche was going to say that
So a group of 50+ people get together to celebrate the release of a product they've worked COUNTLESS hours for in the past few years and decide to do it with a nice nerdy domino salute and baloons, and all you lazy a$$ ppl reading engadget from your work cubicles spend your time harping on them.
At least the rest of the world, the one that MS DOMINATES in market share, appreciates a bit of sentimental nerdiness without being elitist cacks
PS I'm an M.S. student, so i'm allowed to spend my days on engadget :)
I don't know about you AWB but my laptop that used to boot up XP with start up programs actually turns on faster with Win7 ! About 1-2 mins faster than XP
Windows 7 takes a long time to load... LOL j/k
you have to admit that windows balloon is really cool! its twists and turns and cool !
"Life Without Walls" but there's a ceiling & they hit it.
I believe those would be good old-fashioned helium baloons, not hot air. Unless Clippy is inside a tiny wicker basket under each one, working the open flame.
And if that's the case, then shoot that fucker down.
Yeah, the only thing that's full of hot air in this post is the author...
So boring... So MS.
This is so gay. I mean, don't get me wrong, props to the talents that be for putting it together, they are obviously talented.
But to push some product in a marketing "viral" campaign just makes me want to puke. Yuck.
*back to my trusty Windows XP SP3.
4 mins and 25 seconds of my life..........darn it!
Yeah 'cause you know dominoes is what we gay guys do lol
Why is everything "gay" now, again?
"Oh noes, you can't wear pink shirts cause it's gay."."You can't pay your bills with a credit card cause it's gay".
People need to stop growing down.
If bet that if Apple woudl have made it, you would be all "That was so cooool!!" "way to keep it original Apple"
Anyways.... that was really gay tho..
It's not gay if the balls aren't touching.
That's what I call a progress bar! :D
I used to have a dot-matrix printer that took about this long to finish a page also.
But it wasn't nearly as cool to watch
My thought exactly.
This reminded me of dot-matrix printers too.
cool!! but needed a reboot eh!
lol, scanlines
I actually thought that was pretty sweet..
Me too. They should make a windows logo statue out of lego's
That was pretty cool.
Although, the guy filming could've done more with his commentary than 'woooah-woooaaaaa'.
Also, slow boot up times? Jokes on you, 'coz I heard Win 7 has got mad startup skillz.
ya, it's not too bad
can't wait for google's eclier domino stunt
It reminded me of a windows start up screen.....an took just as long to finish! I really hope Windows 7 is a good as they say it is.
Zing!
Oh wait, that joke's already been made twice. Maybe you're the one with the slow boot time...
Is that the number of Microsoft employees that have been laid off since the release of Vista....... or the number that will be laid off when projected sales of 7 don't go according to plan?
ugh......
Type "Windows 7 Sales" into the search bar here at Engadget, read a bit, and promptly STFU.
Like it or not, W7 is selling like cuh-cuh-cuh-crazy.
...or is that you getting low ranked.... get low get low..... to the Windows... there ain't no walls.... stop hatin'my bro..
I don't get all the scepticism.
is it just me or does that sort of prive W7 will still have glitches? lol
It's just a video about dominoes, so you've been *priven* wrong.
You know, you might not have made that typo if you'd read more growing up.
I guess you were "deproved."
@Rocksman1
Hei Rockman1,
Eye reallie down't apreshiate yuu craking jowkes at us pour piople who were deproved of beeyng tot prawper riading skylls when wii werr yunger.
Necst tyme, plise bee mour considaryte uf owr predickamynt.
Hav a gud dai.
Frum,
MZLweasel
my eyes now hurt from all the red underlining @.@
To commemorate Windows 7, they setup a mosaic in which everything crashes in harmony. Yay!
WOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
All joking aside, that was pretty cool. I felt bad when that one part didn't collapse though... It was still amazing.
Something keeps telling me that END'gadget really, really doesn't like Microsoft and is so far up apple's behind, that it hurts.
Enough of the damn negative articles you bunch of dks. Windows 7 is a fantastic product, deal with it. It's on six of my own machines and I don't have a problem with boot times. Maybe your technical expertise is to blame?
Did you read the macbook unibody review? they tore it up, just like any other review would have done. I think engadget is fairly equal. Now the commentors are an other story.
Engadget staff are dykes?!
Seriously, how about enough negative comments on BOTH Apple and Microsoft?
Microsoft makes good products, and so does Apple. The fuck, man...
I don't know what could be telling you that. Unless it's all the constant, whiny, MS bashing articles, and constant, fanboy, APPLE STORE IS DOWN!!!!! "articles"
No, Endgadget (iGadget) is fair, and non-biased one way or the other - they just like to whine when anybody other than Apple does anything cool - which is pretty darn often.
If OS's were Star Trek franchises, Windows would be Captain Kirk, and OSx would be Picard - always talking, talking, talking, but not ever really doing anything. No sir - I'll take the OS that's not afraid to "take it outside" and have sex with any lifeform that can be catogorized as female (or at least that can't definitively be categorized as male).
As a Windows 7 supporter, I agree with Engadget. WOAAHHHhhh.hhh... erm... *yawn*
Cover up, your fanboy is showing.
@ dam
Windows Sucks.
Deal with it.
End of story...
It would have made a lot more sense (and been less boring) if they just made it one big flag that went across in one sweep. Felt like I was waiting for Windows to reboot. Not even trying to make a joke there, that's just what it reminded me of.
Yeah, the choreography sucked.
hahaha...there even was a small "crash" in the video...BSOD lets say...but rebooted and all OK!!!
hahaha, just kidding...i've already installed Win7 and it works like a charm. Not that ai had any probs with vista, and i'm using alot of apps...!
Sad. It is just an operating system. Sure it might be a good operating system, but this level of excitement for it is a bit embarrassing.
Also, dominoes? I guess techies just love bringing nerdy things together.
It's the result of 3 years of work they put in. I don't think being proud of your work is a bad thing.
I'm not just talking about this video. I mean everyone including the national news in my country who ran a five minute report on it covering it's features and the launch party. It's a bit much really.
This level of excitement is sad. Look how many people they had there.
http://fridge.ubuntu.com/node/1759
...doesn't look like 4000 to me.
I agree with you Oli - I had to laugh at the videos for hosting your own "launch party". Who does that? If I ever got invited to an OS launch party, I think I'd probably have to just punch the person inviting me right in the throat.
I think MS launch "party" was low-key when compared to the "rock extravaganza" that Apple put on for the sole purpose of announcing a slight change to their Ipod line.
Many of the MS employees at this launch party were key players in programming Win7, and had put a lot of work into it. I wonder how many Apple employees at their rock concert even had anything to do with the tweaking of their product line.
@10min. Ya, I celebrate when I write a functioning 'hello world' app
Fatal Error at 1:25 that requires tech support.
it's all a little sadly corporate isn't it!
yeah, no doubt they should've had Bono there, rocked a plain white background, and jumped up and down with Zune's so that photogs could capture their silhouettes and turn them into the bestest ads EVA!
That windows installation must have been using Nvidia drivers in SLi split screen rendering mode, the vertical sync was off on the top and bottom of the "screen" and there we artifacts showing up all over the place. At one point the lower card got the video drive stopped working error but it seemed to recover and continue on though. You know that when ever something windows related doesn't display correctly its alway attributed to Nvidia so why should this be any different.
nono, that's the excuse for Macbook Pro's silly
Not sure why you feel the need to drag Apple into a Windows discussion. That is why these boards are getting to the point of being useless anymore, as all the Apple haters can't resist throwing in comments where they don't belong or even make sense.
As a Vista 64 user with two SLi gaming rigs in the house for my teenage son and myself, I was referring to the blame always falling on Nvidia for being the cause of everyones problems and bad impression of Vista. Even though the adoption of Vista was terrible across the board and the fact that the majority of computers sold have Intel graphics cards. It think the number of Nvidia systems in use combined with the ATI systems in use is still only a percentage of the Intel systems in use.
As for your Apple hate, computers are tools and anyone with half a brain uses the best tool for the job, not the tool made by their favorite company. Hardware is hardware, software is software. They are only there for the completion of the task at hand. If a Windows PC machine is the best option for the task then a smart person would use that as his tool of preference. If an Apple OS X machine is best for the task then a smart person would use that as his tool of preference. And make no mistakes there are many examples of one being better than the other at a given task.
I use and have always used Windows because I play games with my teenage son and a group of friends locally and when I work, it's with HMI applications, Instrumentation software, PLC programming applications and other industrial type applications that are provided to me on the windows platform by my employer. If I worked in another industry or profession I may very well have an all Apple house and be a console gamer.
oh, my bad - Do i need to point out to you the inherent overheating problems that the Macbook Pro's had when they first came out? horizontal lines across the screen and such?

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/10/apple-says-some-macbook-pros-hit-by-faulty-nvidia-chips/
Now go write another paragraph about your objectivity again.
Just like a typical windows operating system, an obvious failure in the middle of the performance and the resident geek/guru had to fix the problem! Other than that is was pretty cool to watch and probably took forever to set up! :-)
It would have been better if they'd made it do parallel processing of the dominoes instead of serial.
They probably timed all the stones falling to the Boot-up time...
it Hangs :D
I guess this explains what the Windows Mobile team has been doing for the last few years...
^^ This is the only comment worth reading in this entire thread ^^
hahaha! second that :)
Yeah, I hope this means WinMo 7 is finally going to be good.
Not sure about the new domino screen refresh rate.
That seven patty whopper makes me want to vomit every time I see the photo...
it reminds me of defragging :/
I'm sure this is cool in South Africa, where dominoes is a national sport, but this isn't going to fly Au-mare-ka. Just keep the Windows 7 burgers coming and fatty nation will be content. >.>
Ironically, looks more like a segmentation fault...
This is as entertainment as watching NASCAR
*Yawn* another Windows 7 reportage, another sly dig even when the subject is an innocuous domino rally stunt. If you can't smell the faint whiff of fruit about many of the reports on Engadget then you need a big dose of wake-the-f*ck-up. Aside from the standard sport of launching fanboy slanging matches in commentary columns, this blog still does a fairly good job of representing and relaying new tech news nonetheless.
This proves how wonderful Windows 7 will be!!!! Have you ever seen that done for a little penguin? I think not! Finally a reason to give up my stable XP on my S-10,
Sure, the flag thing should have gone in one swoop so that it would've been less boring to watch, but.. An HTC Magic taped to a cardboard box is "impressive", and this yields nothing other than the trademark Engadget jaded cynicism?
Maybe you guys should disable all commenting again and post another article about how you are definitely not biased in any way.
That JPEG took 4 minutes to load, lol!
an apple boy would say
"it looks like a normal day in Windows trying to render a photoshop image"
A waste of time, in my opinion. But still awesome! Win7 FTW!
matches windows reputation...dominos effect.
You had an idea there for something witty to say, but it just wouldn't come out, would it?
That has to be the most boring domino run I've ever seen. They could have made it do something interesting like spread out to spell all the letters and the logo at once. Something.
Reminded me of two people playing Pizza Worm and just trying to maximize some space
Perhaps Microsoft are now planning to carry out an "unscheduled demolition" of the Old Bailey. That'd guarantee Win7 some publicity...
Microsoft gets way to much credit..
It seems everything baring the Windows logo can crash.
Reminds me of my ZX Spectrum loading Horris Goes Skiing... and like the same. i turned off the video before it finished loading.
Thanks Then
If Vista or 7 boots slow for you, then its about time you got off that Pentium 3 wouldn't you think? Sure 10 years ago Windows booted mighty slow, but today that is entirely irrelevant with both hardware and software advancements.
If I made the assumption of OSX booting as fast as those god awful iMacs you'd be foaming crazy mad. Mac zealots need a dose of their own medicine for once.
This supports my Microsoft, "domino theory"
All of the "Engadget hates Microsoft / loves Apple" drivel is getting really tired. Being objective doesn't mean that they have to love everything equally. It means that they fairly evaluate both sides and come to an honest conclusion.
I'd suspect that many of the Engadget crew, like many of us, have evaluated Windows/OSX, and PC machines / Apple machines, and come to the conclusion that they generally prefer what Apple is offering.
That isn't bias, it's honesty.
lol wow, you can tell these people lack a real sense of humor. "WOOAAAHH!!" hahha
A windows fanboy might say go back to your duplo blocks and your one button mouse ;]
