Jibbigo iPhone app translates from English to Spanish and back again
Jibbigo is a recently released iPhone app which promises to help you out the next time you're desperately trying to make yourself understood by your Spanish-speaking compadres. The app is capable of recording a sentence and translating it -- essentially in real time -- back to you. As you can see in the screencap above, you can speak either Spanish or English, and the translator will do its work, displaying both your original and a translation into the other language. The dictionary contains about 40,000 words, and the app is aimed at travelers. Jibbigo also requires the iPhone 3GS to make use of the bi-directional translation tools, and the app also reportedly functions a heck of a lot slower on anything other than the 3GS. The app is available now for $24.99.

No entiendo.
Why did we need a whole post about this? I've been using a translator on my iPod since the app store first opened. What's the point of this garbage?
google translator does that with several languages. plus, it's free and you can use it on your android.
Trash.. I kept saying taco, and it wouldn't translate.
I kept saying "Gringo" and it would say "Cracker"... but what do saltines have to do with anything?
lol aardwolf
I just noticed this is not just a text translator but voice? That's really cool. Universal translators are coming... Crazy!
"and the app also reportedly functions a heck of a lot slower on anything other than the 3G. "
Surely you mean the 3GS... Because the 3GS is "other than the 3G". Maybe you're talking about 3G funny, like: "You must not use the Edge or the Wifi because it might be the slow."
imagine we all went through life misquoting people for the sole reason of picking fault with what they didn't actually say...
you are one zany mother fukker
I wish they had this for Japanese, Cantonese and/or mandarin. trying to learn Japanese now... damn difficult as hell, at least for me.
I thought iPhone apps were supposed to look cool and have a nice UI. How come they approved this?
uh, because it works? i mean i'm not sure because i haven't tried it, but not everything has to flash, bling and hos... wait, what was i talking about?
Why does it display a US flag if it's translating from English?
Because the US' national language is English?
Because maybe it's American English, instead of Queens English. We do speak English in America also.
Because US English is different to British English and etc.
if the top flag is american shouldn't the bottom be mexican?
If you look at the description of the app, you'll see it supports both British and American English. I don't know if the flag changes, though!
Queens English? Is that a dialect spoken in the New York borough? :P
@shaliron: Australia's national language is English too. What's your point?
@Kiwi616 and aino: Where does it state that the app will only translate US English?
You guys are idiots....QUEENS ENGLISH IS ENGLISH spoken in the UK.
You need to get a clue or get out of America ASAP and travel.
@Tim: Mexico is not the only country where most of the people speak Spanish.
There's also Spain (which it's the flag the screenshot is showing), Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Perú, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, etc.....................................
To reiterate....MAYBE...never said it did, just said maybe.
because US English vocabulary is miniscule (and similar to the program's built-in one). Half the words consist of "fuck", "ass", "yee-haw" and "sup". Real British English uses a much larger vocabulary, that Americans perhaps wouldn't understand.
@fLim: I believe Tim is referring to the fact that the US is the largest English speaking country and Mexico is the largest Spanish speaking country.
@jakem: That's probable, but as many have pointed out, there could be a way to select both languages, e.g. English (US) to Spanish (Mexico) or English (UK) to Spanish (Spain)...
@shaliron
The U.S.'s nat'l language is NOT english. There is no official language of the United States.
Silly islanders English is for 'Merica!
@Jakem, more people in China speak English than USA.
Just as a second language.
Mercia is part of England...
Point being that most users will understand that the US flag will represent English. What else is it supposed to represent? Get over yourself if you think that it means anything more.
And yes, I'm Aussies as well; I know what our national language is. Let's face it. This is an app which is probably going to be used by more Americans than anyone else.
darmok and jalad at tanagra
I don't know what's worse. That you quoted a ST:TNG episode.... or that I recognized it.
Darmok at rest
Shaka, when the walls fell.
Because maybe it's American English, instead of Queens English. We do speak English in America also.
LOL I see what happened to you, but don't worry, NO ONE'S JUDGING YOU!!!@@!
You can do the same thing on an Android phone.... for FREE. What a rip off.
Either link it or stop talking out of your ass.
This is a Carnegie Mellon multimodal speech interface project that's unique to consumer devices at this given moment. I'm sure at some future date the technology will make it onto every smartphone, but nothing of sorts exists on Android right now.
The software actually works, it's not a weekend freetard project to translate 20 common words.
When I first read the headline I saw a racist euphemism. :(
When I first saw the article, I though "maybe it just slows down what you are saying and increases the volume..."
yeah my mind transposed those b and g's too.
@thedman07: that's f'cking hilarious. You must be thinking of the American English to Universal translation feature coming in 2.0.
esta noche me emborracho
and a good emborracho it will be
Been a while since a useful app popped up. Although $25 for a single language is kinda pricey in my opinion.
http://translate.google.com
nuff said. Enjoy spending your $25 bucks...
Haha, did you even read the article? Translate.Google does not do voice translations on the fly.
As long as it doesn't lead to a "My hovercraft is full of eels" moment.
My nipples explode with delight!
Una aclaración: el español es originario de España (Europa). Esa es la razón por la que la bandera que se muestra en la aplicación es española. Un saludo.
