iPhone and Windows 7 don't play nice, Intel P55 chipset to blame
The iPhone is one of the most wildly popular phones the world has ever seen, while Windows 7 is well on its way to becoming the globe's most ubiquitous OS. So compatibility between the two would be kinda sorta important, right? Tell that to Intel's quality control team who seem to have somehow missed an issue between Apple's app carrier deluxe and the P55 Express chipset's USB controller. Consistent (and persistent) syncing issues have been reported on Apple's support forums, wherein iTunes on Windows 7 machines recognizes the iPhone, but spits out an "error 0xE8000065" message whenever the user attempts to sync. While some have found limited success with using PCI-based USB cards (and bypassing the chipset), this is clearly a major issue and something Apple would expect to be fixed before shipping its Core i5 / i7 iMacs, which are likely to sport the chipset. Hit the read link for the original thread of sorrow and regret, and do chime in with your own experience in the comments.

iPhone is too good for Windows machines, duh!
Acutally, i think what they're trying to say say is "iPhone is crap "
Windows doesn't like Apple trash like the iPhone being used on it.
Its not about windows or apple, its INTEL
but yet again everybody and their momma have one..
Wow..they just gave a big middle finger to the iPhone. Uh oh spaghetti-o's!
PS. All the fanboys should really stop and read brandon's comment. That way this thread won't be full of facepalm. =I
its Apples Fault for not making sure the drivers play nice on Intel's p55 chipset on windows 7
@N900 Good advice. Sadly, it was a little late - This thread is all sorts of /facepalm right now. :(
I love how everyone takes time to read the article. . . . .
@Jason you're an iDiot !!! Read the freakin' article before you post
some ignorant fanboi crap!!
Perhaps the article title should have been simply "iPhone and Intel P55 chipset don't play nice" to help the hard-of-understanding...
Or Windows doesn't want to be contaminated with Apple's horseshit app that is iTunes.
Jeez, It's simple:
Dell is paying Apple not to release Windows 7 for the iPhone, and Intel are suing Nokia!
It's always Intel.
Not a Windows problem. I've been using my iPhone with Windows 7 for quite some time, with no issues whatsoever.
Ridiculous.....
this is excellent, I don't like intel or apple
iTunes not syncing with iPhone on Windows… Sounds familiar!
This whole syncing issue seems suspiciously familiar… wasn’t Apple going to great length to prevent a certain Palm Pre smart phone from syncing with iTunes… And isn’t the Palm Pre a Windows device? And wasn’t Apple also going to great lengths working on breaking iTunes syncing capabilities using the Windows USB ports? I don’t know, but it seems like the chicken is coming home to roost. I just find this whole thing ironic.
Um, did you not read the post? It's an Intel motherboard issue. idiot.
Update your Intel Chipset Device Software with the -OVERALL flag to fix the problem. Try Version: 9.1.1.1015 or later.
@Thinker
That's a load of horse crap. First, the Palm Pre is a WebOS device, not a "Windows" device. Second. Apple hasn't tried to block the iPhone from synching over Windows USB ports (whatever that's supposed to mean). Windows USB ports are the same thing as Mac USB ports. The problem here is not Apple trying to break syncing, and its not poorly coded windows, this is a problem with Intel's board.
Wait, so if you installed XP on those machines it would work?
This isn't limited to one motherboard.
I've got a nForce 750a board and I've got similar problems.
I have this same problem on my Core i7 hackintosh. Rarely, I can get the iPhone to sync to iTunes using the built-in chipset. Once it connected and took FOREVER to transfer the data, which gave me an idea: I put a USB 1.1 hub on one of the ports and connected the iPhone that way. IT WORKED! Slow as s--t, but it worked.
@ xbit:
No one ever said it was limited to one motherboard. It is the P55 chipset that is causing problems and it could be on a lot of motherboards designed to work with i7. Your board probably has it.
AMD FTW!!
@cmsb55
Sorry, should have said chipset rather than motherboard.
My motherboard uses the (AMD-based) nForce 750a chipset and I have the same problems.
I just upgraded my PC to a core i5 on a P55 MB and have had no problems when syncing my 3g. Perhaps the problem is intel MB's and not the chipset.
That seems like a major fail for Dell. Most people would certainly rather have an iPhone than a Dell that doesn't allow an iPhone to sync with iTunes. Hopefully they'll just recall all those Dells and send them to India, where people can't afford iPhones (or food).
i bet Palm Pre works just fine! Gee why would iPhone break USB so badly???? Maybe Apple isn't following the USB best practices either, after all isn't USB just USB?
LOlz
exactly, screw apple dont fix it
OMGZ
I loathe acronyms.
It's technically not an acronym, unless you say it as Lawl, or Ohmguz.
@Mike (cc: HotDog)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronym_and_initialism
They were acronyms. Lawl and Ohmguz are not.
Hotdog, ILA?
i've been using win7 for about 2 months and have a 3GS. I haven't had an issue.
Did you try reading the article.
Uhh I read the article and I'm not getting it.
I have Windows 7
I have the iPhone 3GS
I have had NO (I REPEAT NO) ISSUES between them.
Not sure about this chipset business and if it's a newer one or something but until some elaborates I'm afraid this article and all the people bitching at those of us simply saying they've had no issues are just crying over nothing.
so you read it... it's just your comprehension skillz that suck?
P55 chipset bro... that's the new stuff from intel that runs core i5/i7.
If don't understand a topic keep your mouth shut so no one things you're an idiot -- now it's too late and you've removed all doubt -- twice.
Perhaps the article title should have been simply "iPhone and Intel P55 chipset don't play nice" to help the hard-of-understanding...
it's not that the title is hard to understand, it's that it's blatently untrue when taken at face value, and doesn't match the article's point
I haven't had a problem with my iphone and Windows 7 at all.....
Again did you try reading the article.
I have an iPhone 3G, P55 Intel motherboard with Core i7 and onboard USB controller and have no issues syncing with iTunes under Windows 7.
Perhaps the article title should have been simply "iPhone and Intel P55 chipset don't play nice" to help the hard-of-understanding...
HAH, I updated to iTunes 9.0.2 (from 9.0.1) and now my iPhone won't sync. So much for the "blame Intel" theory.
You really should tell engadget about that (not sure if they read comments), then they can post it as an update and apple might see that it's their fault so it can be fixed quicker.
@LondonConsultant
Perhaps you shouldn't repeat the same sh*t multiple times on the same page?
I bought an iPhone last Saturday. I came home, activated the iPhone through iTunes (Windows 7), and it told me new firmware was available. I pressed the update button, iTunes said everything was going smoothly, only to give me an error halfway through the process, bricking my new phone. :(
Luckily, the T-Mobile people told me how to fix it, but still, what the hell Apple?
Did that with my ipod touch two weeks ago. Its something to do with itunes. I had to take my ipod touch back. I opened the box and the first thing I did was to check for new firmware. Started to update and 3 minutes later it was broken. I wasn't impressed.
T-mobile, Hmm jailbroken right ? thats weird them giving you help with a phone they dont even officially carry .
T-Mobile told you how to fix your AT&T iPhone?
Nobody said he was American...
T-Mobile does not exist in only the US. Hell, it's owned by a German company (Deutsche Telekom). Visit T-Mobile's German site and you will see that they indeed carry the iPhone, so perhaps Bas is from Germany.
Or Holland, it's a very dutch name
It didn't brick your phone. You could recover it.
Come on... the headline is totally misleading man...
I mean how fanboy do you need to be?
It's not Window 7 and iPhone... it's 7+chip+phone...
Damn...
There is NOTHING misleading about the headline. It states what the problem is, and what specifically is to blame.
This is the most shining example of fanboyism gone wild - they see a headline with one thing they love, one thing they hate, ignore the third part - and the result is e-tards like 'goodsense' going "lololol i blame windows".
The headline wasn't like it is now... they changed it...
It was something like "Window 7 failed to let iPhone sync..." so it was indeed misleading...
When there are multiple comments like "I have Win7, and my iPhone syncs just fine", then there is something wrong. Either people are not reading the article, the article is not clear, or the title is misleading. If what Unknown wrote is correct (no reason not to believe him), and it was that biased as to jump all over Windows (something Vladislav does often), then there is a reason for the confusion.
there's also a reason to read the article before commenting...
It doesn't matter if the title of the article is misleading, people who haven't read the whole article have NO BUSINESS commenting. Period.
Which part doesn't people understand?!
I read the article before I posted... and that's how i found out the headline was misleading...
Are people here dumb or what?? do i need to spoon-fed you so you know you fanboy are stupid and annoying?!
besides, if the headline is what it is now, i wouldn't have needed to read the article...
i just ordered windows 7 and i have an iphone... so if the headline was "7 and iphone" weren't compatible, then i will need to find out...
but if it said it's the new chip problem, like it is now, i wouldn't need to read since my comp is 2 years old!!
so headline is important!! no one have time to read all articles, that's why there're headlines
if headline ain't important, try jamming all news together and read them!!
Intel is doing a great job blocking the iPhone from reaching the glorious Windows 7 and being infected with the Apple disease.
Sigh. Intel make CPUs for Apple.
Your staggering bias is not wanted or new here.
I have a new Core i5 and I have been unable to sync my iPhone with my new PC and Windows 7.
Sux!
I sure hope the fix comes soon.
hi blame windows 7 . lololol
Ha HA hA hA ha hA (and a 1000 more HA) and Im glad that I dont use Iphone, but HTC Touch HD - much greater!!!
People choose Iphone because it was advertised a lot, and a lot of Iphone users dont even know what is HTC or smartphone itself!!!!
please dont make the HTC crowd look like jerks.
some of their stuff is actually kind of good,
and people like you just portray the contrary.
oh no it couldn't be anything to do with how poorly itunes (or any apple software) is coded for windows, it must be down to the new chipset.
no, it couldn't. because this has nothing to do with iTunes. it has to do with PC's having too many hardware configs to maintain consistent operability. not windows 7. not iphone. but definitely a "PC" issue, as Macs would have had that sorted out prior to shipping.
So if that is the case why is it only itunes and the iphone (and possibly ipod touch according to other posts on this blog) that appear to be having the issue? No other manufacturer of usb peripherals seems to be having these issues and they're connecting via the same usb ports and controller.
So engadget is passing along the Inq's crap now?
Way to go with the sensationalist headline too.
Everyone just CHILL!!!
I have an Asus P7P55D EVO motherboard, Core i7 870, Windows 7 x64 and can't sync my 3GS for the life of me. I've gotten a little further by enabling "C-State" in the BIOS, but that just delays the inevitable failing of a sync process. Haven't had one successful sync yet. Love my iPhone, love my Core i7 box as well (super speedy!) - just wish they would work together.
Yep, got bit by this last weekend. Built a new i7/P55 machine for Windows 7 and started getting that error when setting up iTunes/iPhone. Luckily I had an old Belkin PCI USB card from a few years ago taking up space; popped it in and everything worked like a charm.
This wasn't actually a new issue since I got the idea for the PCI USB card from an older post on the MS site.
This was the link: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/thread/84923584-bf8e-49b4-addc-dc5b457d34db
Apparently these people were having an issue with the USB chipset on a Dell but it was still the same scenario.
I am on Dell XPS 420 with win7 and iphone 3GS, 0 prob. plugged in recognized it and am able to sync like before.
The XPS 420 is the Intel X38 Express Chipset not P55 so you shouldn't have a problem. This is for i5/i7 DDR3 motherboards.
Talk about flamebait.
perfect article for fanboys for bashing and complaining since their fav. toys are mentioned in the same sentence but tragically both cant admit that both platforms are quite usable and both platforms should be supported by each OS but I still cant sync my WinMo device nicely with my iCal/Phonebook/Mail and I still have issues in connecting my iTouch with my PC Win7 so why cry about that each platform is better then the other one since both have some "minor" issues...
its really APPLES Fault that people with an Intel P55 Chipset are not apble to Sync their Iphones
Look at it this way should it be Intel to make there Chipset Play nice with the iphone
or
Apple to make sure the software has compatibility for new intel Chipset
the Title Should of said iPhone and Windows 7 don't play nice on Intel's P55 chipset Apple to blame
some people should not try to make a comment on things they do not understand
Yeah so.. why the knowledgless comment
With Capitals Placed RanDomly FoR no ObviouS Reason?
@goodsense
no dumbass, it's apple's fault for not making good drivers for the p55 interacting with 7.
@ THEHAWKs
I think it's your fault that you don't have enough education to write proper English. At least try learning how to use punctuation marks.
Yes? We'll be laughing at your posts till then, thanks.
OH NOEZ!!!
* ducks and covers *
I guess the iPhone can't handle the 'win' of WinTel?
Right. I forgot that Microsoft owns Intel...
Stupid.
When I read this article I remember exactly how I felt when I received the SAME error attempting to sync an Original iPhone 2G with my Mac G4 Powerbook. EPIC FAIL
In retrospect Apple did me a favor. I waited for the Nokia E71 to be released, and have been living happily ever since.
I've learned a lot about what I expect from a device since that day, and lets just say that unless it supports USB MSC or UMS I'm not spending my money or precious time on it. After all, why should I be penalized just because I care for my electronics.
Stop failing at life and actually READ the post. This fanboy culture (or even hate microsoft/apple) is so lame. So very very lame.
Microsoft is probably working with Intel to attack Apple.
You honestly think Intel is above dirty business?
WOW who told you that Intel is Owned by Microsoft
i did not know that people thought Intel and Microsoft are the same
Dirty Business??
Apple pumping out TV ads with untruth complains about Windows everytime Windows have something new coming out which could threaten Apple market share... seriously dirty business?!
Right. Because Intel would be out to get Apple, who buys their chips. Smart-attack your customers!
Miles @ I think your the dumbest Engadget User i have ever seen LOL....
Yes, because Intel doesn't supply the chipsets and processors to Apple's Mac line, right? Fuck, you fanboys are idiots.
