Whoa, is that webOS 2.0 we see on the horizon? No, sorry, it definitely isn't -- but we can say with relative confidence that the upcoming
Pixi will be shipping with a newer, slightly more feature-rich version of webOS than its Pre brethren around the world; if nothing else, Synergy supports Yahoo on the new model, as
PreCentral observes. What remains to be seen is the exact version number that'll be shipping out of the gate -- recent DSLReports user agent logs suggest that 1.2.9 might be the gold build (for the record, the Sprint Pre currently rocks 1.2.1), but apparently there's some chatter going on about a 1.3 as well. Doesn't seem like much of a difference, but a 0.1 increment usually means more features, fixes, and changes than a 0.01 increment does, so naturally, we're pulling for a bigger number. There isn't any intel on what this mythical 1.3 might contain just yet or whether it'd be heading to Bell, Sprint, and O2 Pres, but we'll keep an eye out.
1.2.9* not 1.29
video
ability to change my SMS tone
ability to customize universal searches (example instead of twitter search dictionary.com search or Bing instead of Google)
emails and documents NEED landscape mode
edit documents
if possible make it a little snappier
if i can get these updates the pre will officially be THE BEST PHONE ON THE MARKET

Bring a change of pants
Is engadget implying that the Pre won't get this software upgdade? I hope not, while I'm not a Pre owner, it seems a little early to have an update to WebOS that won't run on the device...
No, they are simply saying that the Pixi would be getting an updated version of webOS. I'd suspect that the Pre would be updated at around the same time as the Pixi's launch.
The question now is wether this software upgrade will continue to ship with the STOLEN USB Vendor ID?
Changelog:
Restores iTunes sync functionality.
seems like fixing iTunes will be the ongoing x.x.1 updates
I think it would be at least 1.3.1 since Palm is now seeding that out to some devs. Here ya go: http://www.precentral.net/webos-131-seeded-select-developers
Pardon for asking the obvious, but why is a version number of an OS important in the slightest?
If I fix a bug and release version K.M.(N+1) are we impressed?
Well, it's one louder, isn't it?
The smaller the version number the more likely that it includes only bug fixes and a small number of changes. A larger version number usually includes new features that in some cases may significantly increase productivity.
It's an indicator of how much risk will be associated with installing the update.
A n.n.1 means it fixes a few things you never knew about while introducing a bug you will experience.
A n.1.n update is used to indicate beta features are being released and your device is at risk of being unstable, but it may actually finally work for the first time
a 1.n.n update is a big deal, normally it infers you won't actually know how to use it anymore, many things you really needed and loved will have been removed and that your device will potentially cease working upon install. They also contain a range of amazing new features that won't be implemented by anyone for at least a year by which time the feature will be removed by the next 1.n.n
Hope that helps you grasp the complex world of version indicators
Pardon me for asking the obvious but why are version numbers of an OS, especially a new one, of the least bit of interest?
If I fix a bug and move to version K.M.(N+1) are we impressed?
Because different number changes (usually) imply different types of changes. When you have an x.x.1 change, it's typically a bug fix whereas an x.1 change typically means new features.
I would humbly suggest that, given version numbering K.M.N, any change in M simply means someone has decided enough N changes have occurred to bump M.
im sorry but am i the only person that thinks this phone looks just plain goofy?
Pardon me for multiple posting but Engadget is way slow gettin' those things up to the confusion of the impatient.
Just can't wait two seconds to see your brilliance reflected on the screen?
Updates are good because they fix things, add new functionality, allow future developments to occur.
My Palm Pre's working really well, but I'd love to see side loading become easier & heard that was something they were working on (maybe get doubleTwist to replace the ever annoying iTunes sync tete a tete)..
Maybe it's a version that makes webOS an OS that executes its ideas well...you know, without forcing all 400 of my Facebook friends or Gmail contacts into my phonebook?
Nah, I won't hold my breath.
Don't make friends with people on Facebook you aren't friends with. That's why they call it "friends" list and not "random dorks I may or may not know" list
Or, just use Universal Search to find your contacts and then you never have to see anyone you don't want to.
jon.athan -- I wouldn't expect Synergy to be changed in that manner until 2.0, it at all.
What's being tossed around as a lock for 1.3 is a dedicated Facebook app, Also, it supposedly optimizes a bunch of stuff for speed, and may add landscape natively for a lot of apps.
Pardon me while I burst into flames...
I'd say most likely it'll ship with 1.2.9, which has probably been on there for the last few weeks, and then probably get an update right out of the box to 1.3(.1) or whatever. With how easy it is to update over the internet (since it's forced) on webOS, they're not going to bother to manually flash an update to all of the packaged products before it's shipped out, in my opinion.
My buddy has the pre. When we out to lunch or whatever he asks to borrow my iphone3gs to browse the internet. Now what does that say about web os?pre?
Anyone?
what was wrong with his pre?
Pre works perfectly way it's supposed to. But he recognizes speed n browsing experience is different. He bought pre for wow factor n he was trying to be different. He learned his lesson. He now stuck with his wrong decision making for 2 years. He actaualky went out n bought a $400 iPod touch for better browsing email music etc. Sick or what.
The same thing happens with my friend, except she has a bb storm. Everytime we go out she ends up asking to use my iPhone (3G even) to either play games or surf the web :P
What difference is there?
Stop the ride!
Your brother bought a $400 iPod Touch because he didn't like the browser in his Pre?
I see. Well I'm quite happy with my 3GS, best phone I ever had.
Wow great story guys...
Goddamn. That's like me saying I didn't like the browser on my Motorola Droid, so I went out to pick up the new ZuneHD. Lolwut!
I offered my Pre to a friend the other while we were out to lunch. His iPhone couldn't hold a 3G signal.. He refused so I streamed the Verizon map for that commercial while he continued to wait for his web page to load. Then I streamed some Pandora while I loaded his web page and slid the phone across the table to him.
...that he wants to do things that won't be traced back to him?
My buddy has an iPhone 3GS. Whenever she calls me, it's all staticy and she drops calls frequently. Now what does that say about the iPhone? AT&T? Anyone?
But seriously, one person's story means absolutely nothing. I find the Pre's browser to be better than the iPhone (best mobile browser I've used) because it's not wasting a ton of space at the top and bottom and I can see more of the page.
So your friend doesn't agree.. big deal. People have different wants, needs, and expectations from a phone and just because your friend made the wrong decision for himself doesn't mean that the Pre is necessarily bad or that everyone else feels the same way.
There is this website I go to once in a while to see the latest gadgets. I went on this thread about a Palm Pixie and what Web Browser it should have, then this IPhone owner nicknamed "word" starts going off about his IPhone which is irrelevant to the thread subject. What does that say IPhone Users? ridley182? Why is it that every Phone thread I go to some IPhone douche is talking about their IPhone? Can someone make an "Give Me Attention" app for IPhone user please? So they don't have to bother everyone else.
Anyone?
I have a friend, just like most of us here, who has an IPhone but always has to ask to use my other friend's Nokia 6301 because his IPhone cannot even hold a phone conversation. What does does that say about the IPhone being a PHONE?
Anyone?
Resolves intermittent issue that may interrupt cellular network services until restart? Sorry, I HAD an IPhone 2G and sold it when the 3G came out hoping it would be better but it seems every update they release this issue still exist.
Joe, this guy is a troll. It's quite possible that he just wrote a "cool story, bro."
Like this:
*Me and my friend were in an internet cafe on Friday. My friend had the iPhone 3G, but he was getting some bad reception. I asked him: "Why is your internet so shotty? The browser on my N97 is quite smooth.". We talked for 30 minutes, and the next day he said he was gonna get a get a Sprint Hero. He said it was the best decision of his life.*
Let's hope he trolls better next time.
iPhone has a nice browser. Pre is equally nice, But until Skyfire supports those OS's. WinMo & Nokia will continue to dominate the Mobile browser world. It's rediculously fast, Plays all Video formats and supports full Flash. So until things change give me a Touch Pro2 for browsing and a Pre/iDont/Droid for everything else.
"WinMo & Nokia will continue to dominate the Mobile browser world"
The only thing WinMo dominates is the landfills where everyone is dumping those Microsoft dinosaurs.
Blackberries and iPhones are the major players now with Androids and Pres/Pixies coming up the line.
WinMo and Nokia dominate mobile browsing? Is this the Twilight Zone?
WinMo and Nokia are jokes as an OS but until you've used Skyfire I wouldn't expect you to understand. It's without question the standard for Mobile browsing.
Will the pixi have iTunes legal licensing?
Or will they try to leech off apple n be considered iPhone wannabee?
I don't see Jason anywhere, where's your halloween spirit engadget?
Isn't that Pixi scary enough?
Here's what I want in an OS update:
* The ability to change my SMS tone (Yeah, the Pre doesn't have this)
* The ability to go a full work day without needing a charge (Via software optimization)
* Speaking of software optimization, make the phone less slooooooow. I took a pic of a GT40 today and it took over two minutes for the "Send via MMS" button to actually register, and another 30 seconds to bring up my contact list. And I reboot the phone every freaking morning.
Wow. I heard about that. I read Mexican pre will have expandable memory n video cam.

...second time in a single post. Please do your own homework.
Well obviously there's gonna be a new version of Web OS...it's not touch screen so there's gonna be some differences
Are you an idiot? Or do you work for apple? It's most definitely a capacitive touch screen.
ha ha ..oooooh, someone's a bit grumpy..lol, oops, my mistake, for some reason I didn't think it was touch, oh well...
Banksta3 has no idea what he's talking about. All he knows is that he hates Apple, but he doesn't even know that the reasons he hates Apple for are not even true. I pity the fool.
I just want the option for the screen to turn off when on the touchstone.
will this phone work outside the us?
I purchased the Pre the Day it came out. I was a loyal Sprint and Palm customer. I returned it that same afternoon because the place I purchased it was unable to transfer my 4500 contacts. I called Sprint a week later and they sent me to a different store. Miraculously that store was able to fix the contacts issue. I'd had a Palm device since the 90's. Wow!!! seems like a long time a go.
The apps are really intuitive and moving from one app to another is very easy and faster than my iPhone colleagues. The contacts integration and the email features are really incredibly fast and accurate. The camera is really a good one considering that it's on a phone.
I've been using the Pre regularly since June and have only one BIG issue. If I want to talk with someone for more than a minute I need to place them on speaker phone...which is a great way to use the voice feature on the Pre. Voice on the ear is a real CHALLENGE at best. It's time to upgrade my other Sprint line and we are torn between the Pixi or one of the Android models. I'll hold out just a little longer before making the final decision.
OOOOOh and Battery Life...I start the day at 7:15 a.m. and by 10:15 a.m. I'm putting in a new battery. There's got to be a better way. The Pre also goes into fits where it won't turn on at times. It will just give me the Black Screen of Death and then just as mysteriously it will come back to life.
When the Pre is working it is great. The normal voice function needs to be fixed. If I'm talking in regular mode (non speaker) the phone hangs up if you talk in regular mode for more than 30 seconds. Speaker is the best way to use the talking feature on the Pre.
This phone is a total non-starter without wifi, especialy when you can get the Pre for the same price in other places.
Ladys and Gents,
I advise you not to buy palm pixi thats because it wont have wifi support,
wich means that evey "smart" function on this phone will cost you carrier fees
please note that. i think this device wont be a success palm does not have
the wiseness of apple marketing although i think apple products are horrible non functional
and closer than a nun. plam just dont have it, plam will soon close its gates, forever,
sorry palm.
