By now you should be
thoroughly familiar with Sony's
Party-shot-loving and almost unreasonably svelte TX1 compact shooter. Its
headline features -- 720p movie mode and better low light performance courtesy of the Exmor R sensor -- have now been put to the test and we're here with the scorecard ready to spill the results. Reassuringly, all reviewers found image quality to be excellent for the camera's size class, and the TX1 even outperformed its peers by keeping noise comfortably in check all the way up to ISO 800. A 1cm (or 0.4-inches for you heretics) Macro mode was another highlight, though criticisms did rain down on issues of lens distortion, a fiddly touchscreen menu that was too prone to accidental activation, and an uncompetitive price point. Of course, your biggest draw here might still be the optional (and spendy) party dock, but the thorough reviews below at least give you the chance to
pretend like you're buying this camera for the image quality alone.

pretty pricey devicey?
I own dsct90 Sony touchscreen. Sick dude!
just bought myself the Sony 900 too! got it for holloween, i absolutly love this slick looking thing, man i want the TX1 in this article though...
I own a Sony T-70, and I'm afraid I can't match your enthusiasm. The T-100 was a MUCH better camera. 5x zoom that was stabilized better than any other lens I've ever seen, real buttons for controls (I find the touchscreen interface much slower), and no stupid 10 minute video limit (which I learned was imposed to avoid some EU tax).
Welcome to the future. My camera touchscreen.
Cell touchscreen.
Car stereo touchscreen.

To me at least, it seems the reception has been positive. I know there are issues with the camera, but the headline makes it seem that there was at least one bad review out there.
Personally, these reviews have made me think twice about buying a DSC-WX1 and getting this instead. I prefer the more traditional style of the W series cameras, but having used them both briefly recently, I've started leaning to the TX1.
This is Engadget, what do you expect? Shallow one-dimensional coverage of news by shallow-one dimensional writers.
Imaging Resource, which is probably the most legitimate and thoroughly-technically tested review in this bunch gave this camera an excellent reception. And they actually did ISO, noise, color, dynamic range tests.
Unless Engadget expects zero criticisms on any product reviewed, the reviews for this camera are positive.
I reviewed it... good camera, but a step down for the most part from the T900/T500.
My video review is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SySZwac7ovw
isn't that the t500
OK fellas; now let me be an obnoxious Yassole and let me tell you about my new, red GH1...
I have one, heres my opinion: Yeah, It's alright. It takes ages to focus while in Program Auto mode, and then in any other mode you get no IS at all. Its a decent camera, ( has the touchscreen shrunk from previous generations D: ?). It was all good because it replaced a T70? under insurance.
IMHO: Not worth the buy, unless your loaded. The touchscreen is a gimmick, seriously go buy a S90 or even a G11, way more bang for buck there.
Just got a DSC-T90, but it is going back...I think. Beautiful unit as most Sony devices are. My problem is that it comes with a charger twice the size of the camera, and you take the battery out to stick it in the charger. I'll give it a day, and do some more digging to see if somewhere I find I can charge the battery in the unit from a USB port or a USB charger. I don't even mind buying a proprietary cable with USB on one end, and Sony whatever on the other. I'm just tired of having more cubic footage taken up by accessories than the devices themselves. Phone manufacturers are starting to understand and gravitate to standardized chargers. It's about time everything smaller than a paperback book needs to be chargeable via a 5V USB port, or equivalent.
I have a TX1. Best camera I have had so far. Absolutely love it and rekindled my love for taking pictures at random events. Although not exactly the most amazing feature, panoramic mode really is interesting. My favorite feature is night mode. I have never seen a digital camera take such clear pictures in the dark.
I also have the TX1 and just love it. Pictures taken in the dark are just stunning! I honestly have no complains about this camera. It was a very good purchase. Love the touchscreen too BTW.
Also own a touch screen Sony camera-a 2007 DSC-T70.
I agree about the fiddly touchscreen-on mine, I find it a bit hard to control sometimes, but overall the touchscreen is great.
I'm just reading one of the DSC-TX1 reviews-makes me think of the DSC-TX1 as being a quite nice camera.
Sony should have put a 3.5" screen on it (like on the 2007 DSC-T200 had for instance.
I prefer the Sony WX1 that came out from sony it has an F stop of a 2.4 and its a little bit cheaper!
I cant wait to get this camera :D
Loving my TX1 after one week of daily use. The program mode is outstanding and the images are crisp and contrasty, corner to corner. The close-up to 1cm rivals my Micro-Nikkors and the flash is well controlled. The 720 HD video with IS is among the best I have seen. I went to J+R to buy a Canon S90 but this just blew me away. The size is perfect and the battery holds up well. Recommended!
