Sony Ericsson lets XPERIA X10 videos and press shots loose
If you weren't up all night following Engadget (and why wouldn't you be?), the first place you'll want to visit this morning is our extensive hands-on of Sony Ericsson's inaugural foray into Android territory. There you'll find the full XPERIA X10 announcement details and spec sheet, which is highlighted by a 4-inch capacitive display and a deeply customized user interface. With plenty of time to go before that first quarter of 2010 release date, though, we thought we'd get the anticipation revved up a few notches with a selection of handsome images of the device below, and a pair of videos -- one a spit-polished advertising promo, the other a useful demo of Speed Forge 3D -- after the break.

Any one know what the video recorder on this does?
480p?
Qualcomm states WVGA (800x480) for the Snapdragon platform, but the TG-01 and HD2 both do only VGA (640x480).
HD2 does 800x480. What are you talking about?
iJames:
From your comment, I can tell you're not knowledgeable on anything relating to tech.
"Slightly faster than the crappy G1 processor?"
Are you serious? Do you understand the difference between the normal ARM 11 and Cortex A8 chipsets? Or are you just stupid?
Since you seem to be an Apple fan, look at this. Old iMacs had 3.33Ghz Core 2 Duo. The new has 3.06 Core i7. Guess which one is faster?
Before you spout nonsense, at least learn something about technology please. Just a tiny bit. At least just the differentiation of processor and their clock speeds. Thank you.
P.S.
Thank the Lord it's not an iPhone either. Or else we'd be left with a button and grid of icons. Along with limited multitasking, low-res 3.5 in screen, and the need to jailbreak and void warranties in order to get anything done.
@iJames
Learn to read. Did I say "no multitask?" No I did not. I said it correctly. LIMITED multitask. That part of your comment is shot down.
Screen. Sharp, crisp. So is the HD2. So is the Droid. So is the Xperia. So the point still stands...it's low res compared to the newest devices hitting the market. And this isn't even OLED/AMOLED. Another point shot down.
And "hack" our WinMo/BB/Android phones. You make me laugh. The funny thing about that is...those users don't have to "hack" anything. That's the iPhone where you have to "hack" and void a warranty just to get a wallpaper or them. How can you even defend that?
And to address that...most folks do that to show that the iPhone UI is nothing of a marvel. And I've yet to see mainstream use of an iPhone UI on these phones. I see BB with BB. I see Android with Sense more than iPhone. And I see WinMo with SPB shell. So what are you talking about?
I'm not going to make this a "iPhone sucks" post. Because it don't. iPhone is a nice piece of hardware. But it has it's flaws and limitations which you so fervently want to protect. I don't get why, but you do.
But the main point of my comment has not been mentioned upon. Why are you on a tech blog feigning tech know-how. Yet you can't even tell the difference between superior processors and their clock speeds. You seem to think clock speed is level across all processors with your comment.
Learn something kid. Then try coming back.
Yes. Because you operate your phone from the lock screen. /sarcasm
You're running out of points kid. You claim there's no need to jailbreak. But yet, Jobs sees it as such a big deal that he has made a new firmware that further locks people from jailbreaking. Hmm. I doubt they'd spend time fixing a problem that many people didnt do.
Yet, you still havent touched base on your inability to understand a processor, different level processors, and their clock speed. You keep going back to how the "iPhone is this and that."
So you proved to me a lot in just these few post. Mainly, you know nothing of what you speak of, outside of "The iPhone is the greatest."
Which is good for you. Your preference. Your choice. But nothing but opinion. The rubbish is coming from your post. Take another look.
I'll still be waiting on the answer to the main question I asked before you started going on a tangent about irrelevant things and incorrect things.
iPhone is the dumass joke of the industry now. Did you know they still can't do full Bluetooth corectly? You know, that 4 year old + technology.... that's just the tip of the iceburg...
@iDavey responding to me
No, the screen res is WVGA, but the device itself only records in VGA, many previews have confirmed this, one guy said it's WVGA, but he corrected that later.
It's a shame, I know, but I hope that the guys at XDA will somehow be able to get the WVGA working on it (I can deal with 25FPS if I have to).
Now, back on the topic of the X10; am I the only one who thinks the UI is absolutely hideous?
@iDave "Yes. Because you operate your phone from the lock screen. /sarcasm"
Actually, with my G1 I *do* operate my phone from my lockscreen.

iJames White, your comments and slavish love of the iPhone is laughable. I have one and its good, and my wife has one as well and likes it - that being said, I do hope for the next great device. See, you're a moron because you just sit and want 0 progress in the tech front. You don't want better processors or UI, you just want to think that you have the best device there is and fear the fact that you may not.
Wake the f*ck up man - progressing past a 2 year old device is good for the world. Maybe not your fragile ego, but that doesn't mean a damn thing to the rest of us. Go masturbate while editing the iPhone Wiki and let the rest of us talk about new technology without your backwards inadequacy issues spewed all over it.
@WaffleSlayer
I was speaking on the iPhone with iJames.
Kindly educate YOURSELF before hopping into a conversation.
No harshness meant...just saying.
Sure is told in this thread.
First time to see Sony-ericcson all "balls-deep" on a new smartphone in particular an android phone. We agree, that Xperia has a bitter history on older models. Hopefully, this X10 release will turned out to be a happy-ending. But still, this phone has a far way to go on competing the iPhone kind or the Killer-Droid

Kudus, to the "classy" promotional vid
I can't believe I stayed up all night knowing that something like this and the other Ericsson post was going to show up!
Anyways i believe its going to be a pretty nice handheld but price is whats going to shoot it down :\
My contract is ending by January. Hope if the reviews good, i would buy this. If iPhone4 comes in T-mobile in UK, i will consider which is the best. :)
I'll take both.
The black and the white? Or the phone with the woman included?
I love that it has no Google markings on it and Android looks completely hidden beneath 'Rachael.' This is potentially something I would get, here is to hoping that 1700mHz support is utilized in the US and not in Korea or Canada. I'd potentially buy this phone, cyanogen mod it and call it good :)
Let it be potentially?
Specs show there are two versions. One that supports AT&T 3G, another that supports T-Mobile's 3G
totally a fail, dont like this phone
no 2.0
Wow, and some people thought the IPhone was pretty!
too much gimmicks in UI.
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Yes, the girl in the promo vid is pretty hot. So her name is Rachael? Also, her boyfriend at the end is a douche.
Oh wait, were you talking about the phone?
jk
SonyEriccson is dead as is Motorola. Anybody remember thier hyped to the max mobile X1. Remember the price? Remember how log it took them to deliver? Now another successor that will hit a vivid marked with no chance to ever make it.
Do you mean this one?
http://www.whoisjohnny-x.com/index.aspx?en-gb
And a STANDARD headjack!!!!
Seems like they did? http://www.engadget.com/photos/xperia-x10-official-pictures/2415470/
iPhone - blast from the past?
Where's the buy now button??
Mulit-touch anyone?
I prefer not touching "mulits." ;)
http://www.engadget.com/photos/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-announced-we-go-hands-on/2412901/
Zoom buttons... no multi-touch
Excuse me, no "pinch zoom" which I assume is what you meant
i agree with some other comments that the UI is a bit over the top, i'm thinking it could actually be quite annoying in use.
i hope i'm wrong but i can imagine performance taking a hit while all the transitions and effects do their thing on screen as well.
i bet stock android would fly on this thing!
will the lack of google branding and the lack of 2.0 mean no google maps nav?
i'm just not as convinced as i'd hoped to be...
also Q1 2010 - anyone taking bets on how far that'll slide?
I'm no techie, but is it possible to just uninstall the SE version of Android and install the basic "Google Experience" version? Like you can do with PCs; reinstalling the OS.
It'll be possible like any other android handset on the market. We just need root access and someone to customize the rom for the device.
Sony Xperia is the hot chick right?
My previous Sony Ericcson phones never worked properly after a while. I hope they made this one reliable...
I'm still waiting for the Satio A =(
Apple better step up there game.
Or their game. I'm an asshole.
touché, I would have done the same. I know better but wasn't even paying attention.
Touché. You're starting a sentence.
the top part reminds me of a HP iPaq....
and it looks huge....
but since it can be stuffed into the girl's shorts pocket, i guess the size is fine....
But how big were those pockets really?
Sony seemed to think the VIAO P would be pocketable too ;)
Am I reading correctly? Are they going to make you pay for Wayfinder for GPS? That's bunk now that we know Google has it's free app, and that even Verizon is going to allow its use.
That's a region specific inclusion. Most likely won't even make it's way to the US (If the phone even makes it way to the US)
