Sony's VAIO X ultraportable gets gently unboxed on video
Sony's 11.1-inch VAIO X may not have the internal hardware we'd like, but there's no denying that this thing is as capable as any machine at seducing you into a purchase. The good lads over at NewGadgets have managed to secure one over in Germany, and while their version doesn't ship with an extended battery, it's still worth taking a look at. Trust us. It's waiting for you after the break, and if you're new to all of this, that giant "Play" button that'll appear is what you'll want to press.

Sorry if a bit off topic, but Sony seems to be the only company that has yet to release an i7 laptop. Can anyone tell me if there are any plans for one? These ultra-portables are nice and all but I would like to see some i7 power in a Sony laptop.
Not sure when one is coming, but I'm going to assume it would be one of the most expensive bit's of kit around.
urm HP envy?
@Tes: No doubt about the expense. In general Sony is pretty darn expensive. Adding i7 to the mix definitely wont help matters. Honestly though, none of the i7 laptops (except maybe the Acer Aspire 8940) are cheap.
@Oli D: I am actually following the HP Envy 15 just as closely on the NotebookReview.com forums. I am just trying to find out more info if Sony is going to release an i7 laptop or not. All the other PC/Windows manufacturers have already shipped/released or announced their i7 laptops but I haven't heard even the faintest rumor regarding Sony.
I'm wondering if its worth the price to get an i7 or not. I am in need of a new laptop and do some minor photo editing in Photoshop and want a laptop that can play Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 when they come out. I personally think i7 would be a bit over kill for me but since I am in the market for a new laptop and Bing is rumored to have another 40% cash back offer coming up around Black Friday/Cyber Monday I was thinking of going all out laptop wise.
Are those elbows or fingers? :)
The MSI GT640 has also a Intel Core i7 and is available in germany. I have it here.
@OneLove,
Holy shit man, i too was wondering if anyone else saw TWO FINGER TIPS and the notebook all of sudden became a microBook. its FINGERS! not elbows! xD
Looks like a lovely piece of kit.
It is a computer
I saw one of these at the Sony style store in Ceasar's Palace and it is unbelievability skinny. The trackpad is a bit small and it could benefit from a trackpoint ala thinkpads but otherwise very nice.
I'm torn on this one. It really does seem underpowered to me, but it also seems like the demographic this is meant to appeal to doesn't need all that power anyway. Either way, it looks great, but I'm starting to think I can't deal with screens smaller than 13". I just need more real estate! :|
A very expensive netbook IMO
have you not seen their P range!?
I have not looked at a Vaio in ages. From my recollection they tended to use weird proprietary configurations in their hardware that would cause glitches in your OS of choice.
Is this still the case?
I have an AR-790, dual core 2.5 GHz, 1920x1200 17" monitor, 4GB, and blu-ray drive, and 640 GB hard drive. I haven't had a problem with it at all. I have Vista Ultimate on it. The display is gorgeous. "Back in the day", this model sold for $2500. I lucked out and got the floor model that was barely used for $1500. I've had it for about 2 years now and I havent' had a problem with this "used" model.
I have only two complaints. The built-in speakers are subpar, but I hear that it's a typical for laptops. However, my Toshiba Qosmiio has such good speakers, I don't need to hook up externals. The other complaint is that it only has 3 usb ports. I wish it had one more.
I also dual boot with opensuse linux booting in a separate usb drive.
The only problem I've had with a Vaio so far is the buttons randomly falling off and having to use virtual keyboard for certain letters.
at first glance, i seriously thought the elbow right above the computer was a finger tip and i thought to my self, "damn, that really is an ULTRA portable!"
doh!
hah! me too!
LOL, I did the same thing!
Ok, me too!
For $1299, I'd rather get the MacBook Air, which has a Core 2 Duo, and it's only a couple of hundreds more. And you can dual boot to both Mac and Win.
"and it's only a couple of hundreds more."
Yea, only.. MBA = no built in 3G bit I guess thats why you have to go out and buy an iPhone 3G to tether...... only another few hundreds more eh?
The MBA also either weights twice as much or doesn't even come close to the half the battery life of the Vaio X; also, the MBA lacks internal 3G...
damn, that was meant for linleili
Good point... but for $1299, it is still costly. Take for instance the Nokia Booklet 3G. I was just stating for a netbook or laptop, whatever Sony is classifying this computer, I'd rather spend $1000 on something that has a better processor. Not for an Atom.
And yes "it's only a couple of hundreds more." You are talking about $100 or $200. That's nothing if you're going to be shelling out for a laptop that's at least $1000.
And granted, the Air has been out for a while, so Apple hasn't even added 3G to their lineup, since adding 3G isn't mass produced yet.
That being said... if you want a light laptop for at least a 1000 bucks get the air. If you need one with 3G, get a Booklet.
It's worth noting that sony uses the more expensive, more battery efficient Atom processor; the same one most UMPC's use and basically no netbooks use, which certainly drives both the price and battery life through the roof.
sweet a $36 handbag? OMFG
They replaced the TT with this!?
looks better than the TT to me. I'm guessing the TT didn't sell very well. that's what you get with a hugely expensive laptop with a slow processor.
how does this compare to the $300 acer 751h series?
i think that has a slower processor, no SSD, and is twice the weight of this.
It is quadruple the price.
The Sony Style store her in Scottsdale has a couple of them hidden in the back room for people to see but not buy. Its pretty sweet, but the keyboard really sucks. I would only use it for overnight or short weekend business trips, so it would be nice for compact travel needs, but as a daily user, and with that keyboard, forget it!
How is this person still posting?
oh, and to the macbook air comment, yep, got one of those too (along with a Lenovo x301 which is my daily around town laptop) but the footprint on the air is a bit large for travel bags, again great for daily use, but not as convenient for business trips/flights. This Sony X is definitly in the travel category....if you can handle the keys. One point the sales tech pointed out at the store is, that there is a sticker on the bottom warning about skin damage from the heat! NO FANS!
Ban this D-B please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes I think Sony is only in the PC business to make Apple appear not to be overpriced.
Sony was overpriced long before Apple, but Apple is claiming to have invented overpriced electronics...
I've seen it in person at a Sony store a few weeks back. It looks nice and has a nice high quality feel to it, but its processor is pathetic in a $1200+ laptop. Better to get a $400-600 netbook.
"Sony's 11.1-inch VAIO X may not have the internal hardware we'd like"
This normally means, it looks nice, but it has no balls. Seems to be correct.
*Yawn* another $1,500-$2,000 product from sony.
So, it's exactly like my Sony VAIO P, except more expensive and bigger with a lower resolution screen? I'll stick with my VAIO P.
Considering it has more or less then same specs as the P and larger I don't understand why it costs more.
“As you can see, so much to read when you by a Sony Vaio X11”
I was cracking up when he got to this part.
This is a serious competitor to the Macbook Air.
- Amir Rosenthal
And also the Lenovo.
- Amir Rosenthal
there probably afraid to snap it in half

this cuts the macbook air in place of a cake
Looks nice, but – again – it's totally overpriced.
Something else: That german guy has got a really ugly accent. Just saying ...
