Symbian Foundation teases augmented reality/social networking tool, says you'll probably never get it (video)

The percentage of returned gadgets that have nothing wrong with them.
Of the $13.8 billion worth of returned products in 2007, only 5 percent were because gadgets were actually broken, according to a 2008 study.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
What!!!
U mean nokia n900 still DOesnt have apps of the future. Get with the times already!
ya know I was gonna say something...but...nah, it'll go over you head.
N900 isn't Symbian
I wonder if Uncle Jesse and The Rippers will be doing the music for that birthday bash....
it looks like you need a ride on the sy(m)bian.
Then why the fuck show..
You know what. I'm highly upset.
Well It's not like they said "YEAH! I made this but I'm not gonna give it to you, nya nya!" This is just Engadget's spin.
Seriously Tim didn't even include the LINK to this article because then his while above logic would be blown to hell. Here ya go
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/10691_Symbian_UI_concept_video_from_.php
Oh okay...I was almost past the point of no return anger, lol.
I'm loving the concept of it. I'm all for it...I just need Symbian to actually push out a device with their new OS soon...
It's a bit much to expect Symbian to go out and develop a full-blown navigation app just because they felt like using one to explain the new interface paradigm.
Couple of thoughts on this article:
1) Symbian foundation should get of their fat rear-ends and launch real products, like, you know, an OS called Symbian^2. How long have these guys been promising us this?
2) Calling this a response to Google's navigation announcement is really silly Engadget. You make it sound as if Nokia (because, really, that's who is the driver behind Symbian Foundation) is playing catchup. Nokia has had Nokia maps, with full voice navigation for many years now, and the latest version, Ovi Maps, has also started doing the rounds. I think it's Google that's playing catchup here.
I'm pretty sure Engadget was using sarcasm, lol
They announced the Symbian roadmap in March. Symbian^2 went to developers a few months ago and should be appearing in retail devices by the new year. So they'd been "promising" it for maybe 6 months, and got it out on schedule.
It's not Symbian's job release devices with the OS, it's up to Nokia, Sony, Samsung and the rest.
the statement number 2) is so true !
I'm a real google enthousiast but Nokia (Ovi) maps has been doing what google navigation does now for a long time now.
But adding onto my comment of utter rage (didn't you feel it).
This is a nice concept. Since Symbian isn't adding it...I think someone should...
Oh wait...don't we have Layar. Well...someone needs to add that as a layer on Layar then. Thanks.
"says you'll probably never get it"
You know I looked everywhere for where they said that, but I just couldn't find it. Why is that?
"To be clear, this is a concept video of a future Symbian UI. This is not the UI for Symbian^4 (although big UI changes are currently planned for this release). However, many of the ideas and principles that appear in the video will likely feature in the future implementations of the Symbian platform.
"An artist's concept of the future of the Symbian UI, also shown in Lee Williams' keynote at SEE 2009 on 27 October 2009. This concept is not part of the Symbian UI Roadmap, but we hope some of the cool features and effects will make it into our reference UI and/or delivered handsets.""
Maybe this is just Engadget being a douche again...
Thanks for giving Google some new ideas to implement because you suck too hard yourself, Nokia.
It's a demo of how Symbian^2 and Symbian^3 UI elements are meant to function, not an app concept.
Yeah, they were showing the following things (copy&paste):
1. Kinetic scrolling (in Symbian^2)
2. Location-based services (in Symbian^2)
3. Different widget sizes (coming in Symbian^3)
4. Animations and transitions (coming with NGA in Symbian^3)
5. Compass and accelerator integration (coming in Symbian^3)
6. Menu at the top of the screen (inspirational idea)
7. Toolbar at the bottom of the screen, replacing soft keys (inspirational idea)
8. Augmented reality integration (inspirational idea)
To me it looked like a dull phone like there are a billion others, but I'm not into phones it has to be said.
Is this some kind of joke ? .. apps like this have existed on Android and iPhone for ages and the Layer app especially goes well beyond what this demo shows. They better come up with something better than this whenever they do decide to release something.
I think there is a difference between "like" and "equal to". Else i can say my Nokia 5800 is like iphone.
I don't get the point of this video... Why showing something they're not going to do? It's like showing a candy to a little boy and not give it to him.
If you are curious about the Forex world and want to learn everything about it go to: Forex Robot Marketing
There's already an augmented reality application for Symbian:

I get the point of your comment :|
Layer anybody?
you mean layar? that augmented reality browser for android?
300 ft? there's no way he's standing a football field away from that house.
Even their vaporware is buggy.
too bad no symbian phone will ever have a UI like that....
When Symbian^3 is released you see that you are wrong. Symbian^4 has complete UI overhaul.
I like cheese.
Theres allready something like this for Android and Iphone
It's called Layar
http://layar.com
Symbian....give it a rest Nokia and join the rest of the world...Android!
Only reason it is still tops is Nokia just floods the market with this cheap phones or not so cheap phones that has an outdated, 80's UI. Someone needs to just put this to the grave like like Toshiba with HD-DVD.
You really don't know what you are talking about. If only you would know that they have been working hard to get new UI ready for Symbian^4 (well, who knows if it's ready before that and manufacturers start using it before that). Technically Symbian is more advanced operating system than Android and iPhone's OSX combined.
Also, why scrap good operating system (especially when it's shifting towards QT based developing) when UI is outdated and can be redone?
Question: why are so many AR "concept" videos making it to public view and not staying in executive meetings like they're supposed to? Oh yeah, self perpetuating AR hype.
funny, I totally know that house
Geeze... How much longer we're going to get pitched by augmented reality thing? It looks like some losers with money trying to sell public dead end idea.
