Because Sprint uses EV-DO for their 3G network instead of HSPA like AT&T and T-Mobile. Right now, Sprint and Verizon are on EV-DO Revision A. I believe a revision B was developed, but by that time, WiMAX was well known and LTE was known to be coming soon.

So Sprint went with WiMAX instead seeing as it would be more future proof by being able to upgrade up to 4G speeds. Verizon has started building their LTE network now and should start to come out in a few cities in the next year or 2. Sprint has rolled out WiMAX in like 10+ cities I believe. And AT&T is having enough trouble building their 3G network to worry about 3.5G or 4G.
