It's been a long wait for PS3 users, who had to look on in envy as their Xbox 360 counterparts kicked back and started streaming Netflix as of July last year. Well, the wait is finally over, as PS3 instant streaming discs are being sent out to Netflix users (
who've requested them) as we speak. Looks like our friend Jonathan here has a Friday delivery in store for him, while the lazier ones among us hunker down for an XMB software update late next year to let us stream Netflix to the PS3 disc-free, in keeping with the natural order of things.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
What is XBOX 360 response do all this?
XBOX360 response? Just picture Nelson from the Simpsons pointing at that red disc that PS3 noobs have to insert, and letting out a big "HAH HAHHHHHHHHHH!"
What is the Wii response to this?
Spiderman: How do I playback DVD?
nothing right now, they have software exclusivity for now, but there isn't anything they can really do
What's so bad about putting a disc in to stream?
Last I checked, in order to play a game, dvd, or bluray, I had to get up, walk over to the PS3, and insert the disc?
So the joke is on you xbox fanboi..
anyone know if this will ever be available for people across the pond? i would love to stream movies to my ps3 in spain.
the disc is temporary, so this is a trivial argument. i'm far more interested in the UI. since netflix uses the xbox ui, i doubt we will see that on the ps3. as someone who owns both, i think the ps3 ui is pretty shameful in comparison, and i hope they tried to do something better. it would be nice to watch netflix without a leaf blower in the room.
@Mr. Blue
During the HD DVD/BR wars, people on the BR side used as one of their main arguments that since HD DVD did not have the capacity of BR, if you were watching TV shows on HD DVD it would be such a pain to walk across the room to swap disks, while with BR you would not need to change disks as often.
PS3 fans like to bring up the fact that while playing games like Forza 3 or the upcoming FF on the 360, you will need to get up and change disks, while GT5 and FF for the PS3 will ship on only one disk.
But now, when you want to watch a movie using Netflix on a PS3, walking to the player and swapping disks is not a big deal? If changing disks is such a problem with the 360, then wouldn't it be better to use the 360, as you don't need a disk at all, and therefore no laborous 5" journeys across the room to put a disk in the machine?
@nohone changing in the middle of a game or movie is a way different scenario than putting a disc in once and pressing play
@NohOne: Forza 3 installs disc 2...if you DID need to put in another disc to play another map or get another car it would suck ass....
but that install ONLY works on models with a HDD...meaning Disc 2 is USELESS if you have an Arcade model...
I'de rather have to put a disk in than pay for Xbox live gold just to get movies that i am already paying netflix for over a connection i am already paying the cable company for on an xbox i already paid for.
If this means HD... FINALLY... from netflix (no xbox yet so SD was all I was getting) you will see one happy PS3 owner.. except... my bluray drive on my PS3 stopped reading discs... Looks like I'll still be waiting :(
I'd rather pay for Xbox live Gold than use the PS3's excuse of an online experience and UI. Only haters and fanboys could spin having to get up and put a disk in as being better than not having to. While you search for your disk or hope your child or pet hasn't decided to use it as a toy I will be sitting back watching Netflix with no disk in sight.
@ High : We aren't discussing XBL vs PSN?
Nobody said putting a disc in was better than not putting a disc in. What myself and Raptor are getting at is this:
The act of putting a disc in isn't that big of a deal. It is done all the time whenever you want to play anything from optical media. Raptor's point is that on top of paying for a console, broadband connection, and Netflix subscription, in order to do Netflix on an Xbox, the live membership carries a fee too.
I don't get why everyone has a problem paying $50 a year for XBL. I spend like $6 a day at Dunkin Donuts and $0.13 a day ($50 / 365) on XBL, and I get way more enjoyment from playing games than drinking coffee. And yes I play XBL every day, so I don't see how using those 13 pennies left over in my pocket from coffee every day is such a big deal.
No, I do not think that putting a disk into the player to watch a movie on netflix is that big of a deal. However, there was a number of people who were very vocal and made a big deal out of needing to go to the player to put in a new disk with HD DVD or some games. To those people, if 2 is worse than 1, isn't 1 worse than 0? If, after watching 3 hours of TV show, getting up to change the disk to watch another 3 hours made HD DVD useless, than why not make the leap to being completely lazy and not need any disk. Just press the button on the 360 remote, push a couple buttons, and you are done.
High poster is High.
Also why is Richard being downvoted so much if everyone is replying to him?
Just got mine too!
I received a notice as well for the same delivery date. While I currently use a laptop as my HTPC, it will be a nice option to use the PS3 as well.
aw man; when I went to Netflix's site they only asked for my email to notify me when they would be doing this... I didn't get anything yet :(
are you a netflix member??
if not then you wont get an email until they send them out for that....
Can't wait until it is an app on XMB. Until then, I'll stick with my 360... no changing discs for me. (Just a loud-ass console.)
For me the biggest deal about having the native app instead of the disc is that a native app is required to be used via wifi on the psp. I am about to buy a PSP GO, I look forward to netflix streaming on the go via wifi, there is no other pocketable device that can do that...
OMG! They're sending out discs people asked for!
(Too bad they weren't sending out brains.)
What about Linux?
Have not received notification of it being mailed yet. Maybe I will get it shortly.
i guess i know what i'm doing this weekend.
Putting your 'spindle' though the disc?
Finally getting that rash looked at?
Manual gerbil extraction?
Smuggling this into Iran?
Additional activity unrelated to streaming Netflix through your PS3 in a corny attempt at humor?
@dan2ktj
How did you know? i got it after i slept with your mom, effin hoe, i asked her not to tell you, didn't want to hurt your feelins Danny boy.
Coming soon to the Wii?
I know it doesn't do high def, but I actually have my Wii hooked up to an old tube TV, so that would be just fine for me.
I hope this works well with the PSP via remote play!
No other Blu-ray does why would this?
Like I posted above we will have to wait till the software release for remote play on the PSP.
if VidZone(only in UK so I'm not sure if it does or not) allows access via RemotePlay then its a CHANCE Netflix might as well....but I'm not holding my breath
Chris, I think I speak for many here.
Please hold your breath.
I haven't gotten mine yet......
If you havent got a email yet Check your account status and then click watch instantly on ps3 should tell you if your disc shiped.
thanks for that tip, mine shipped should be here today
This is B-AWESOME
Got my notice today too! I'll play with the new disc; understand that the video isn't 1080i or p quality as it is with the Roku settop box which comes in SD/HD and HD-XR flavors. A friend who has the Roku says that more features are coming with that delivery method. Wonder what features are in store for PS3 and X-Box?
AOL Coaster part II.
Yeah, except that you actually have to REQUEST that they send out the disc for your PS3. How many people ever actually asked for an AOL CD.
Oh.... I actually have! They make great coasters, table top game discs, throwing toys or decorative art. All you had to do was call them up and ask for one. It was better when they had 3.5" floppies though because you could always erase them and put your own stuff on there, but the CDs were great fun.
yes, AOL was initially send on request, then later they was included with some products...
I just got my email notification too. I have to say that I am not a big fan of having to use a disk to watch netflix. The 360 pulls this off with no disk and it doesn't matter what I have in the system tray (game, dvd, cd) I can still watch netflix. It's a silly inconvenience but an inconvenience none-the-less.
and for you XBOX360 fanboys, that are laughing that we have to put in a disc to stream, we'll why don't you put in a Blu-Ray disc in your XBOX..... hahahahahahahahahah
I don't need to. I got teh Windows 7 Media Center.
Are the Netflix DVDs or Blu-Ray? Free? For some reason the link to get them won't work for me on this page.
yes its free....
http://www.netflix.com/InstantStreamingDisc
Why the fuck would you need to put a disc in to stream content over the internet? Doesn't the PS3 have a hard drive and a wireless internet connection?
Reeeeeetard.
the vast majority of people seem to think its to get by a loophole in the MS contract....we will likely never know the REAL answer tho...the XMB software will be released next fall....
Honestly where the fuck have you been man? This topic has come up so many times, so yes I agree with sireB
"instant-streaming disc" is an oxymoron.
It's a legal workaround since XBAWKS has a built in software exclusivity contract through sometime next year.
not really....its like using software installed on an external HDD or USB flashdrive
except that... it's not.
the storage media is different but essentially the same thing dude
Essentially the same thing? Technically? Yes
Taking into account though that the gaming systems primary functionality comes from its disk drive....that is where the problem lies.
This is a stupid work around, and an inconvenience. Needing to take up the primary functionality of the gaming console in order to have your netflix cd in the tray is ridiculous, and excuses should not be made.
@Freedom Town
Unless your console supports multiple video streams, I fail to see how having a disk in the drive to start streaming is a big deal - you can only view one thing at a time, so why sweat it?
Besides, as it has been said many times before, putting a disk in the drive to stream is kinda like now, where you put the disk from netflix *your dvd* in to watch it.
those comparisons have nothing to do with my original statement. the distinction is that a cd is external and must be placed into the drive and a hard drive is not and need not be. but i'm beginning to feel like i'm explaining something to a five year old, so i'll leave it at that.
PS3 Netflix + Motorola Droid = Best Friday Ever!
fat bastard
Does anyone know if thid will work outside the US, Mexico to be exact.
I'm considering getting a PS3 but from what I read (and I admit the last time I really read up on it was about 6 months ago) the PS online gaming isn't close to the XBOX Live experience....
Can someone that owns both either confirm this or squash it.
I own both consoles and prefer to play multiplayer on Xbox Live, however the PSN experience is pretty good too. Both consoles have their merits, if you have the scratch, get them both. If you can only choose one, I would get the Xbox 360 unless watching BD movies is high on your priority list.
If you aren't big on talking (half the people are annoying as it is...never have the volume right, no PTT enabled, screaming at their siblings, rude/vulgar language) and don't want to pay for the privilege of gaming online, the PS3 is just fine. The only advantage the 360 online gaming experience has is voice chat.
Correction: PS3 DOES have voice-chat...just doesn't have "cross-game voice chat" meaning you can't talk to you're friends if they're in a different game. But rumor has it, Sony is working on this and its "coming soon".
There are no real differences between Xbox Live & PSN...its mainly all preference. The biggest difference is PSN is FREE and XBOX LIVE is $50 a year for Gold Membership ($39 if you find deals). If you want to enjoy all the features of XBOX (including Netflix) you have to pay the $50 a year fee.
Netflix on Wii is likely coming in time for Christmas.
And, Netflix on PS3 requires a disc due to whatever license they signed with Microsoft (or due to whatever deal they cannot get with Sony for an XMB app)...
I wonder how this is going to be compared to the Roku player.
Yeah, does this enable HD streaming from Netflix or just SD? Sorry if this has been covered but I wasn't really paying attention as I thought this was further out.
How do they know my name?? I don't even HAVE a PS3!
They know everything. Like what you did just now... don't look out the window, they won't be there.
Also, people who have watched the disc died within 7 days.
I'm happy about this, my xbox 360 isn't in the living room because I don't have a wireless adapter for it, and I'm sure not gonna pay $100 for one, I also don't want to have to pay for netflix AND xbox live gold, with this i'll be able to watch movies in the living room the same way I watch blu-rays
I'd settle for being able to SUBSCRIBE to Netflix in Canada... SIGH! Our options up here just aren't the same.
I wonder if there will be anyway we could copy the disc to a flash drive and just leave it plugged in. eh...prolly not...
I didn't get an email but when I visited http://www.netflix.com/InstantStreamingDisc, I was told that it shipped today and I should be getting it tomorrow. You actually have to be signed up for the Netflix service (I'm on the trial period but I'm going to keep it probably) to actually get the disk shipped.
My big question and I haven't been able to see this anywhere, is it going to allow for HD streaming like the Xbox 360 does?
yes it will support HD Streaming
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/26/netflix-ps3-disc-must-remain-in-system-until-2010-update
Sweet - got mine too though I can already access it all on my HDTiVo's!
BTW one thing on PS3 better than XBOX 360 is that on XBOX you have access to about 100 movies from Netflix, while using PS3 you will have access to all of them 12000. Now isn't that worth selling your XBOX 360 and getting PS3.
Think about it?
Since this disc uses the bd-live features which are basically just javascript etc. when will this be hacked to run on a standard PC?
Last time I checked PCs already had Netflix streaming. Who would bother hacking this.
For the HD streaming, since PCs are limited to standard def.
My disc is arriving tomorrow. I can't wait to use my PS3 instead of the jet engine that is my Xbox 360.
PS3 owners im really happy for you and ima let you finish, but Xbox has hade best Netflix service of all time.
I find the Xbox Netflix interface really frustrating. I have over 400 movies in my instant queue (for PlayOn purposes, but that's beside the point), and the fact that Xbox won't put them into categories means that if I want to watch something I added to my queue a while ago, I have to step through hundreds of titles and listen to that annoying little flippy sound HUNDREDS of times.
PlayOn not only streams Netflix, Hulu, and dozens of other online video streams (at SD, but I don't really mind), but it organizes them by genre, title, or date added. PlayOn rocks.
That said, I'm receiving my Netflix PS3 disc tomorrow, and am indeed excited about it. If, however, the interface offers nothing more than Xbox does, it's back to PlayOn full time!
Mine is on the way for delivery tomorrow! Yahoo!
I wonder if you can browse all the movies from the app?
Mine is pending. : (
Mine too - anybody take the time to inquire with Netflix why some are still pending? I signed up RIGHT AWAY
I use the play on service pay $30 and i work really good works on ps3, xbox360 and wii, has amazon, hulu, netflix & more and i had if for more than a year, i dont know why people havent been using its great
Can you stream on the $5/mo plan?
Yes, 5 hours of streaming is included for the $5 plan.
Another Kanye reference?
Kinda old now.
