Correct me if i'm wrong but at least in terms of NVIDIA's support for 3D, it jacks up the refresh rate to 120hz(normally 60), and alternates the frame to cause a 3d effect when viewed by a corresponding shutter or polarized glasses. Therefor the 3D effect is something that must be implemented in the game itself, the monitor doesn't know it's displaying "3d" content, it's just displaying 120 frames a second still. When in "2D" mode(in non supporting games/applications i.e just at the desktop) it could still be at 120hz, just that it's displaying more frames than normal. The great effect of this is you can force 3d off but still use 120hz and have really great reproduction of fluidity instead of 3d effects....
I really don't find 3D all that amazing (though i haven't seen it myself), but what it indirectly brings is official support for high refresh rate, something I've been advocating for for years(especially when the general consensus was that refresh rate doesn't exist for LCD's...)

eatbuckshot

Comments on ASUS to dizzy eyes with G51J3D and G72GX 3D laptops

When will this gimmicky 3D nonsense stop?

Brickster

Comments on ASUS to dizzy eyes with G51J3D and G72GX 3D laptops

Depending on how good it is I don't think it ever will!?

If done well these things can be truly amazing and of course if it's relatively cheap to produce then it's another thing that manufactures can use to hook you in.

I have watched some old school 3D films on my projector and at 80" plus even that stuff is great so as screens get bigger and better I can't see this technology disappearing any time soon.

rezaudio

Comments on ASUS to dizzy eyes with G51J3D and G72GX 3D laptops

Leaps in technology don't just happen in one day.
