As for Apple... why do they hate our data? We don't ask much from them, just to hang onto pictures and stuff. Doesn't seem like it is that hard of a concept.

I would like to buy Apple TV, but I'm unsure if it plays DVDs stored on a local hard drive in folders (folder/video_TS...).
2nd thing I would like to know if it plays .wav files or at least some other loseless format apart from ALAC. Converting my library to Apple loseless would be enourmous task to take...

Enormous task? If it's already in iTunes you can just select all of it and tell it to convert the whole library (as long as you have enough space). It maintains all the tag data and leaves the originals in tact...It couldn't be easier actually.
@Aaron...Dude, you don't convert an already compressed song to another format. That's audio quality hell. This is why people should continue to buy CDs so that they have the REAL copy of it and not buy crap off itunes.
My assumption was that this individual had all his music in another lossless format already. People do rip to those you know?

BTW, what is Apple thinking with this thing? Its been out for years now & just kinda sat there, doing the same shit with no real upgrades to functionality. I bought one & sold it a couple weeks aftrewards after I realized how limited it was. Elegant, but limited.
One would be extremely stupid to buy this opposed to say the new WD TV Media Player with networking capabilities for $120 that can stream any media from any computer in the house to your TV in 1080p. Which BTW, it can also now stream your iTunes media as well from both PC & Mac thanks to Orb.
Apple's had a bit of a problem holding on to your data lately... its actually an unfinished feature where you pay monthly to keep your data from not deleting itself.

I noticed that, too. Considering all of Apple's products revolve around the storage and manipulation of data, one would think they'd manage to figure out a way to make it not disappear arbitrarily.
I wonder if they told Anne that before she moved all her stuff over to a Mac? Didn't she have like 3 or 4 boxes? That could get kind of expensive.
I'm surprised with Apple.
First of all, let me get something off my chest... We just got 2 brand new 27" iMacs at work Friday and one of them has a problem where the fan constantly blows (literally) at high speed. Seriously, this started happening at first boot. When giving Tech Support a call, they responded by saying we needed to take it to the nearest Apple Store (a good couple hour's drive away). TO HELL WITH THAT! We're not wasting personal gas money just to fix what they screwed up! Fortunately, our boss kicked a few butts over the phone and arranged something.
They are a company that acts like they're perfect in every way. When you have a huge consumer base that encompasses both Hardware and Firmware, you BETTER. Makes me wonder where all that money is going...
zax, what the hell did you expect? steve jobs to fly his personal jet to your office that day and fix it for you? what would dell have done in the same situation? if your computer has a problem you have a few options: ship it back, drive to the store, or STFU.
Dell would have either offered a replacement or to have a person come out the next day. Apple wants you to drive to their store. Which one sounds better?

I got a shipment from Apple about 3 weeks ago for 10 new iMacs as well. 3 were DOA and another one's HDD died on tuesday. Apple's response, I will have to PAY to ship it to the nearest apple store just for some "Genius" to tell me its dead.
Now, what would dell have done in that situation, From past experience I would have 3 new machines on the loading dock waiting for me when I got to work the next day. And keep the DOA machines for parts :)
Apple makes nice machines, but their customer support is great, UNTIL something breaks. Then its somehow my fault because its perfect and "just works."
Not even going to start on this whole snow leopard debacle. And I thought my Win 7 migration was going to be hard.

This is a key factor for an enterprise player when deciding if where to buy their computers from.
On a separate note, it would have been nice is Apple could have apologised in their email. When you break something that belongs to someone else, it's polite to at least say 'sorry'.

As for material for ads, I kind of like the 'Here's what our operating system does, here's a feature, he's how it's used, here's how it's useful' approach the Windows 7 ads take.
The metaphorical data as cardboard boxes of 'stuff' with a smarmy justin long standing around in the middle of a blank room while making fun of Windows for god knows what reason... not so much.

Well, well, well. Disappearing data, was that a feature introduced to the 3.0 version of the OS, like copy and paste on the iPhone, maybe Apple folk can backup all of their data on a TimeMachine to keep it safe. This has been a great couple of months for the computer industry, Microsoft is turning a corner, and Apple folk are looking at the mirror. Well, I could rant on, but I have to do an upgrade from XP to 7 on a friends PC, its a lot easier than a OSX Tiger to SnowLeopard upgrade.
Glad I got mine updated before anything happened to it.
Loving 3.0, BTW. iTunes LP is amazing in HD.

That's an incredible piece of logic. So, because other operating systems have problems, that means we can't talk about the problems in OS X?
If only every apple user would feel this way maybe these rants would not happen, but most just think that Steve Jobs is god and Cuppertino is heaven, and thats why comments like mine above are nessesary.
First of all, nobody said Window is perfect. Then again, people don't hate Apple because of their products (or at least that just me). I just hate the way they operate: badmouth other companies, always act high and mighty when their Os bugs all over the place.

We are talking about Apple here, and its recent mounting problems with their software. Who said anything about Microsoft and Windows? But if you really want to bring in Windows for this argument - Windows is a whole other bag of pain but one thing it never did, from Windows 1.0 to Windows 7, was to delete user files without confirmation...

I bet that you are the type of iDiot that loves to point out the flaws in any Windows OS, yet when it comes to OS Xista you will not hear any of it. The way Apple spins it Windows is the only OS that is full of bugs and causes uses endless headaches; however their OS is flawless "it just works".
I'm sure the 5 engadget readers that have Apple TV's will be thrilled.
I saw the bug. I re-attached my AppleTV to my MBP and redownloaded my content. Today I applied the patch. :/
Me too (except there was no data loss). This is a non-issue. Nothing lost. 3.0 is a pretty minor update.
The Danger story was much bigger but it seems that only a few users in the end lost any of their data so it was over-hyped. You hear about the problem but no one reports on the resolution. Seems like we like to throw crap at Microsoft and Apple whenever they fart but can't be bothered to look at the big picture.
