Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
And how do I get Jasper?
All the new ones being sold are Jasper.
i saw this in my local asda on friday when i was picking up dragons age, tried to buy it but they didnt actually have any its just a cardboard box you have to take to the counter
cool. except it would be nice if this came boxed in w/ the console because that would even out the playing field.
Except for the blu-ray. Throwing in the adapter is the least they could do.
You can't even call the Xbox a sell out. They were extortionists from the very beginning. YOU did this to your self.
sucks but it's how Microsoft and Sony make up money for them initially selling consoles at a loss
The original Xbox was a loss leader for every consecutive quarter. Its because of the fact Xbox was very expensive due to the hard drive and the built in online capabilities and CPU/GPU that had to be sold at a loss to compete with the PS2. I saw Microsoft's bullshit coming when I realized they were making so many different SKU's to offer less and less yet, still sell accessories at markup.
The joke was on them when consoles got those red rings and they ended up loosing billions. Xbox360 is probably the best system on the market but its got so many crippling flaws its incredible.
That's why they'll never sell the HDD's or the wifi adapters for a fair price. Meanwhile Sony Ps3 users can swap hard drives whenever they want - and their systems have Wifi.
I feel cheated honestly.
@jnorman3
I understand the frustration at Microsoft's pricing scheme on hard drives and wireless adapters, but to compare the Xbox 360 with PS3 on a strictly hardware basis and say PS3 is better is completely farcical.
This weekend Walmart was effectively selling the Xbox 360 for $100. Factor in a hard drive, wireless adapter, an extra controller, and a game of your choice (all purchased through online retailers) and the 360 STILL comes out cheaper than the PS3. Of course you can argue on game collections and that would be a different story altogether. But when it comes to hardware pricing Microsoft has Sony beat.
As for the rrod atleast Microsoft owned up to it eventually and now their repair policy is extremely lax regarding the rrod.
How hard is it these days to integrate WiFi??? Honestly Microsoft, my ass still hurts from paying for the wireless g adapter, and then you throw this our way for LESS??????
Jondo
I'll never claim PS3 is better than Xbox 360. Xbox 360's GPU is way better and doesn't suffer from antialiasing or washed colors as much as PS3.
and yes, I perfer to buy games on 360 than PS3 because XBLive is actually worth paying for compared to PS3's free online which isn't as good.
But I am simply annoyed with Microsoft for never integrating WiFi into the Elite or the limited edition HALO model. Imagine how ugly it looks plugging a WHITE adapter to one of those models??? and now the Wireless N adapter is ONLY BLACK so if you wanted it for your older, White 360, you are outta luck and gotta stare at that black on white color clash.
WiFi adapters shouldn't exist. they should be integrated into anything that expects to go online from the get go.
But what really pissed me off is when MS doesn't let you simply buy a WiFi adapter and plug it to the USB port. In fact, its ridiculous and stupid that the 360 has 3 USB ports yet this adapter MUST take up one of them. so guess what...if you have a Vision Camera...you gotta plug it in the front. Its ridiculous man.
I agree... Mixed feelings about this. Cool that you can get 'n' (although is that really necessary? I haven't seen any real trouble with gaming on my 360 with the wifi adaptor, not noticeably different from my m.o. of ethernet from router, although it might help with streaming movies) but I still resent that the 360 is the only console not to include wifi.
@Jondo
You are going to compare price of a console that is on a SALE price and other one with the RETAIL price?
What kind of logic is that?
Not bad. The old one costs £55-£65 so at least they're not charging closer to £90 Like I thought they were going to.
I'd rather buy an Ethernet bridge. Better range and more ports and for similar sort of price to this.
How about you make is $49, and I'll consider it.
So this supports N. Which is better than normal ol WIFI. But is it still compatible with the older formats? And will it perform better with the old?
Do you mean a/b/g? As far as I know any N router will function or at least be compatible with other broadcast signals. Not necessarily better though. While N gives higher bandwidth, b/g function better at longer ranges.
I think.
no, i'm pretty sure N is better at everything
N is faster and gives you more range. It's will work if you just have a G router, but to really benefit you should have an N router and N receiver.
N works best inside, since it uses radio reflections to its advantage, plus other things such as a/g multicasting and greater frequency width (40MHz vs 20MHz)
Cool I guess. I will continue to refuse to game with a wireless connection. Even ignoring periodic drops, the added latency sucks and is noticeable far more than it should be.
My recommendation - save the 49 quid and get a nice long run of Cat6/5e whatever you need.
I use the built in wireless-G of the PS3 for gaming and movies and never have any latency issues. I've been streaming HD Netflix movies all day without any buffering or quality adjustments.
Wireless G is quick enough for gaming/streaming video. Where it really counts is how quick and reliable your internet service is.
Streaming video is fine even in high latency links. It uses UDP as opposed to TCP that you would use in many aspects of gaming (though voice chats and such would be UDP).
TCP, means that every packet that is received is acknowledged, and if it doesn't arrive the packet is resent. This is used in most communication on the web and ensures all the data you request arrives complete. Since round trip communication is necessary to coordinate the packets being received a high latency connection is far more noticeable
UDP, means that the server dishes out the data but the client doesn't require each packet to arrive intact. If a packet is dropped the client will just wait for the next packet down the line. UDP is ideal for streaming, because if you get network congestion or a failure of some sort it will just pick up later. The lack of constant acknowledgements and two way communicaton make UDP perform more smoothly even over high latency connections.
So just because it streams video well, doesn't mean the connection is low latency when it comes to other things like gaming.
Then you must be doing something wrong. I game all the time on wireless and wired and the difference on my network is unnoticeable. My ping is the same too.
Agreed you are wrong perry, gaming on wireless has no differences.
So what's that in real money?**
$81. It looks like it's not going to be at the $99 price point as was rumored. I'd imagine $79 is going to be closer to the price in the US.
** No, it's not €54.
Who cares about online when you're banned? Thats right! No one!
What do you do then? Play MW2 early cause you don't give a shit anymore!
Just buy a bridge and use it in wireless bridge mode. It's cheaper, you get better performance, and you can still use it as a router or receiver for other things.
Sorry, meant buy a router.
Amazon U.S. has the product available for pre-order for $99.
It claims to be releasing on November 10, 2009, but (even as an Amazon Prime subscriber, 2 day shipping) has a delivery date of November 16, 2009.
For that price, I think I'll buy one of these instead:

Anyone know where I can buy an extremely over priced wireless adapter? I have money to throw away and my game system is too cheap to come with one built in
I work at best buy and I have sold a couple of these already....
They are $99.99. Employees get them for $78.24. ;]
$78.24? that's a decent price... but working at bestbuy is too high a price to pay.
I kid ;)
Dont be fooled i went into an ASDA store this morning all they have are the empty boxes and no stock.
Yeah, but its no iPhone.
im happy to send them to the usa of a if you yanks want i live near asda so can get my hands on them easily
i really hate the whole addons pricing of microsoft console, from wirelesss, hard drives to gold live... the ps3 seems to be better value and its getting better
Amazon lowered the price to $84 and will ship November 12. For everyone who pre-ordered from Amazon, you will get the pre-order price guarantee and the price charged (at time of shipment) will reflect the new price.
