Nokia N900 is now shipping!
Nokia's Maemo-based future has begun: the N900 is shipping. According to Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the eagerly awaited handset is now en route to at least some pre-order customers. We'll soon see if this new generation of Nokia smartphones will be enough to generate the type of mass-market / high-margin appeal that Nokia needs at the top end of its product portfolio or if it's just a tentative first step on a potentially wobbly new platform.
Update: Nokia's official blog says to expect the Maemo 5 device to land in "Europe, the Middle-East, Russia and North America" shortly. However, it won't be compatible with the new 3G SIM cards from 3 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark and Austria until a software update hits sometime later this year.

God yes yes yes that it right the oooh god yes don't stop ooooooooooooh ok ok i'm done whooo mmm that was good caN'T WAIT FOR THIS PHONE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG THANK YOU ENGADGET FOR LETTING ME KNOW
Grapes are fun.
omg omg this is happening !
I'VE BEEN BRAGGING TO MY FRIEND ABOUT THIS PHONE FOR MONTHS AND HOW IT RUNS TMOBILE 3G FASTER THAN ANY CURRENT PHONE ITS BASICLY A MOBILE COMPUTER THAT JUST HAPPENS TO BE ABLE TO MAKE PHONE CALLS THATS AWSOME
OH YAYAYAYAYAY.
This news has been on Reuters for about 6h and while nothing wrong that Engadget posts as every othern newspaper, news sites and what not are reporting it it still isn't announced where it has always before been before the release.... In Nokias own press site. Just saying.
That's what she said :(
*Waiting for user N900 to wake up and post all over these comments* =-D
Again wrong information from engadget! Maemo is NOT a new platform. How hard it is to get your facts right?
"platform" goes way beyond the OS, I mean software, hardware, and services -- Thomas
Normally, I'm not easy on Engadget's mistakes on Nokia - but @Btdt, there was none in this post.
It is a new generation of _smartphones_ and the first mass-market appeal Maemo device (hence the "future" starting now).
Maemo "new platform"? "wobbly"? I think I have to quit Engadget and look else where to satisfy my it news fetish....
If Windows OS is a platform, Maemo too is.
It is a clear departure from Nokia's Symbian based mobile phones. Maemo is a Linux based OS.
and not new by any measure
The pre-production demo I had for testing was really good. This is a nice product, since it attracts both the nerds and the normal everyday users, unlike the Droid which is pretty much nerds only. (Note. this is not a troll, myself an Android user, for the time being).
EXACTLY THIS IS WHAT I HOPED ANDROID WOULD BE BUT ITS GONNA TAKE A GOOD WHILE LONGER BUT NICE PROGRESS BUT IM GONNA GO FROM MY G1 TO THE N900(SORRY CAPS WAS ON TO LAZY TO RETYPE )
Hard to believe considering last time I heard these pre-production samples didn't know what "portrait" means.
Whats the price of this? Same as Droid? Higher than Droid? Lower than Droid? If its higher, its a "no, thanks" for me.
Not entirely true - portrait / landscape switching worked perfectly in picture browser. But I guess we'll have to wait and see the final result in the production units.
actually i don't see how the Droid is nerds only. I wasn't really into the Droid in the beginning, but yesterday i went to verizon with my room mate since he was looking for a blackberry, and i started to play with the Droid. I honestly liked it, not because i'm a nerd, but just because it seemed like such a cool device to use. I fail to see a big difference between it and the N900 tbh.
Damn my heart is shaking !! Should i take this or the HTC HD 2 ? I love Nokia, I love WinMo, I had the luck to play with the HD2 and it killed me ...but i always though i'd take another Nokia to replace my good 'ol N95-8GB buddy... Heelp !!!
ninja whatchu thinkin'??? get an n900!
N900 in a heartbeat . I would get one of those if it will not cost more than R$ 2400 here in Brazil, like the N97.
It's not an smartphone, it's REALLY a computer that also make phone calls.
FINALLY
now i have some fun
SUDO FUN
Best. Refrence. Ever.
I want to get this phone, but I got the crappy N97. Now, I have too wait.
I almost went off with the N97... lucky me i waited!
iPhone for the time being...
@orangemonlah
Yes... you dodged a bullet, believe me. I am not happy with the phone. It's ok, but it's NO n95. It works, mostly. And there are some nice features to it --- when they work. It crashes a lot, almost to the point of annoying. At the end of this story. Symbian is NOT made for a touch screen, and it NEVER will be. If this phone had Android on it, it would be stealer. The hardware is really nice and the keyboard feels good and the form factory is the right size. But that phone does NOTHING by crash. Seriously, it is the crashiest Mo-Fo around. Change the name to "Chashy97".
My god, now all it has to do is tether with a redfly and I would want for nothing more.
I DO WANT ONE. THIS IS A BIGGEST NEWS FOR TODAY. SO HAPPY.
Lol me too - trouble is, I want an iPhone too- and I just cannot decide which to go for.
Oh, finally.. how long have we been waiting..
Now, can someone to let us know if it'll work with tmo's data plan..
it should work with tmo usa since it has the 3g frequencies. i pre-ordered through dell and hopefully they ship it out soon.
Oh, I knew that.. I just want a verification :]
Check out the thenokiablog.com. It works on the T-Mobile 3G network. There is a video posted showing a broadband speed test using the N900 on T-Mo 3G.
its that time of the year again... gahhh my pocket is going to SIZZLE...psssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
sounds like u have an iphone and that its overheating sit it down slowly and step behind a blast shield to insure u won't die thankyou for choosing apple your number one provider from mobile death have a good day ok bye............
How about an iPhone vs HD2 vs Droid vs N900 article? Anyone?
there you go: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/20091105/smartphone-wars-nokia-n900-versus-htc-hd2-versus-motorola-droid-five.htm
@renegade
Too bad that reads like a N900 piece with two other phones tacked on. One proof:
* Furthermore, the internal memory of the HD2 seems slightly lacking as at 512MB, you will pretty much find yourself running low on space soon enough. Which is unfortunate as considering that the HD2 is being billed as a heavy-duty multimedia phone thanks to its large screen, it hardly has sufficient space for storing media files, particularly videos. Of course, you could buy a high capacity SD card for the SD card slot, but you will still want your other files and map data stored internally on the device.
How is that a HD2 only weakness (it's not even one)...

I ran into this over the weekend... that's the last in a series of articles comparing features and pros and cons as decided by the reviewer... so read the other articles. Overall, they still sound exceedingly favourable to N900, but at least, there is more information for anyone interested.

Though I like to see N900 come out on top of some other devices, this review is really just made for ad-revenue through clicks it'll attract - since there are lots of simply copied/pasted parts in it.
N900 vs Droid: Biggest holiday season showdown.
...Vs HD2.
...vs HD2...
FIGHT! :o)
DAMN YOU COMMENT SYSTEM!!
...apologies for double post.
HD2 probably too expensive and doesn't have a physical keyboard
Are they fighting for 2nd place? Or is it 3rd?
Nokia has always been 1st.
heres the offical word from the nokia blog:

awesome phone, if i wasn't bound by a contract for the next 20 months i'd definitely get it
Can't wait!!
Goodbye N97, hello N900!
Or the Milestone when it hits the Netherlands. ;)
I'm waiting for the Milestone too, any word on a release date?
Nah afraid not. Well at least not that i´ve heard of. Only Germany and Italy are likely to be getting it very soon, like tomorrow or something. No word on the rest of Europe...
Please correct me if I´m wrong.
Germany has the same 3g bands as us, so most webshops will sell it
True, but the German Milestone will probably have a ´QWERTZ´ keyboard instead of a ´QWERTY´ keyboard.
RIP IPHONE we wont miss you bye bitch u dead
Performance is nice! But it looks big. I would like it without keyboard :)
Then the N920 will be for you, if you don't mind waiting of course.
Exactly. Ditch the keyboard (= slim it down to 13mm or less), and I'd be very interested. As it is, it's just not pocket-friendly enough for me.
It's just a hair bigger than the iPhone.
meh... no love for singapore.... :(
"although it won’t initially be available on new 3G SIM cards from 3"
How stupid isnt that? Why even pre-releasing a model that made for being online nonstop and not being able to use with one of the biggest wirelessbroadband operators, 3?
Dont rush out the good stuff, at least make it work before pre-releasing,
Stupid finns..
Can't wait!! Hopefully it arrives to UK soon.
when is it coming to t-mobile USA .
T-Mobile WILL have the N900 BEFORE Christmas 2009.
I promise. :-)
My guess about the 3G SIM from 3/Hutchison is that it has been giving Nokia stability problems, keeping the otherwise ready phone unreleased. The 3G SIM cards are not very new tho, they've been using special cards for a couple of years or so. It's bad karma not to support it out of the box, but I think Nokia wins most of that karma back by already knowing the problem and being honest about it, then if they really do get a stable software for these SIM cards released before new years the impact would be minimal. It'll take a month or two to hit the shops, and 3 wasn't one to offer pre-orders anyway (at least not here).
It is a big clumbsy phone tho, but i'm willing to sacrifice slim for a keyboard, I mean, even the iPhone is too big for the pocket with its 61x110mm on the flat side. If I had a say phones could be up to twice as thick as the iPhone if they'd make them 10mm narrower, but I guess that's simply not the size of touchscreens these days.
Anyway, congrats Nokia! I hope it is as good as the reviews have been, then you'd be back in the smartphone race. Oh and congrats about the growing smartphone sales, and still being number one. (read Ars Technica (dot com) if you have no idea what I'm talking about)
Anyone interested can check http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=353767&postcount=186 & https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5315 for more info
Ah, they even keep their bug tracker open, great to see :) I was just guessing from how the company I work at works; when some critical error occurs late and it's a loner, they would release it with the condition that customer support and retail knows exactly what doesn't work, and when to expect it to be fixed.
Sorry I forgot to mention: Links are about Hutchinson 3G SIM card issue
Which one should I choice? iPhone? Android? Or N900?
Finally! Time to put the iPhone on eBay to pay for this bay!

Petition - Shazam for Nokia N900
Shazam:
"As the N900 is running the Maemo 5 Operating system, Shazam will not be compatible when the phone is released.
Currently there’s no plan to develop an app for the Maemo 5 OS ..."
SO I MADE A PETITION AND IM IN CONTACT WITH SAZAM AND NOKIA
- PLEASE SIGN -

Kind regards, Dominique, Switzerland
Hmmmm I think it'll be easier to develop Android app-framework support for Maemo. Doesn't have to be Nokia that makes it, it is Linux and it is opensource, so it may pop up by itself, or perhaps you'll see something like OpenOffice, where nokia starts it, and lets community maintain.
The deciding factor in if/how/when such support could be ready to use depends on a lot of things, whether Nokia likes the idea, whether the opensource community likes Maemo etc... Who knows, it may come around quicker than we can imagine, but dun expect nokia to touch such features until the OS has a decent level in their bugtracker.

sudo apt-get install fun.deb
su -c 'yum install fun'
i was going to buy this phone but in the end i went for htc hd2 being delivered tomorrow
Epic FAIL
Meh, I canceled my pre-order for this phone because it doesn't support AT&T 3G frequencies -- I don't know about you guys but I get quite decent service from AT&T (been without a contract for over three years, maybe a couple dropped calls just this year, and low monthly bill). If I went with T-Mobile just to support this phone, my monthly bill would go at least $20/m more and I'd be on a contract again for what, two years? No thanks. I'll wait for an updated N900 to support my carrier's 3G.
T-Mobile will let you go without a contract from day one now.
Will this run on AT&T and/or T-mobile in the states?
n900 will run on both t-mo & at&t. but you only get edge data on at&t. 3G data will be on tmo.
I got one at the Amsterdam Maemo summit that I tried to get working in Denmark. I tried using it with my Danish 3 3G sim which it just choked on. A new TDC sim card works just fine in it though.
Awesome device in every way, except for the battery life which drains in a day if keeping a 3G data connection open.
That's common for almost any smartphone these days. But if it stands the WHOLE day, it's good enough ;)
Don't forget the HTC Dragon, where a new screenshot of the UI has been released on Boygeniusreport, although IMO the N900 is still the daddy of them all!
Anyone in Canada planning on purchasing a unit? Any idea if this will work on telus network as they do their system upgrades (I'd rather not sign up with Rogers)?
It's been a long road, getting from there to here... It's been a long time, but my time is finally near...
Finally a worthy replacement for my good ol' N95. Now this is what computers have become!
I want! Oh sexy n900 you've been taunting me for far to long.
Can someone explain to me why this phone can't connect to 3G networks in mexico and other countries?
I waited so long just to find this out now...
Just depend the frequency of the carrier.
In Brazil, at least in my carrier/area, 3G works at 850, but this phone just have the 900/2100(and 1900?) frequencies, so no 3G for me here, unless I change carriers.
Try to get info on what frequencies the carriers works in your area.
I'm not sure where engadget received the info that some are headed for those that pre-ordered. I was among the first and that's not the case. And, frankly, now I'm debating canceling since some sweet Android and other devices have come out or have a trusted, exact date of release.
Anyway, onto the meat of information:
I pre-ordered this from Nokia September 2 (at the time of receiving a free BH-703, free overnight and Nokia care protect for only $19). I just called to find out shipping status and was told they are not shipping until "the middle of November sometime and should be sometime next week." Vague is a bit of an understatement at this point don't you think?
I know this isn't an issue for the customer service rep, but did tell her I was told "the middle of October" the last time I called and requested a more exact date (particularly since it's overnight and you have to be at the address to sign for it). She didn't have anything exact - just "the middle of November." I then asked her why the CEO has told the press they are shipping today. She said "I can only comment on what the status shows." I mentioned that Reuters, CNN and others all have the CEO quoted that they are shipping today. She said "that's something I will have to look into" - so I waited thinking she was going to go talk to someone, but after several seconds of silence she said (you'll like this), "you'll know when it ships when you receive an email that it shipped and tracking information." Then, "is there anything else I can do for you today?" I thought about telling her, "Yes, ship my phone - this is getting beyond old," but didn't bother.
I also re-initiated my pre-order with Amazon as well so we will see which arrives first. However, usually when one pre-orders something like this, it arrives on the doorstep the day it's released - I do that a lot. Nokia is the first company I've dealt with that this is apparently not the case. Heck, Amazon had the last Harry Potter book show up for my daughter the same day brick and mortar bookstores had it for sale (nice) and when I pre-order DVDs, the majority now show up on the DVD release date.
If something changes at Nokia - I'll update y'all.
why does no one read and understand the 'official Nokia blog'. This started shipping on the 10th Nov from factories around Europe. Expected to reach retailers within 3-5days. From that point give it a day or two for processing before being shipped out to you. Exprected to be with customers around the 15th - 16th.
