NVIDIA Fermi GT300 GPU delayed until 2010?
We're so sorry, true NVIDIA believers, but that airbrushed "I love Fermi" shirt is just gonna have to wait a little longer to see the light of day, at least according to a report from our favorite chip-centric foreign news syndicate, Digitimes. Taiwanese industry sources say the release of its Fermi GT300 GPU has been delayed until Fiscal 2011, which for the company means not until at least late January 2010. That "NVIDIA New Year" fete you've been gloating about on Facebook? We really hope you can get the deposit back on the rented space.

Well, good thing I got 5870.
i want one of those so bad. i have Crossfired 4870s right now and im debating if it is worth it to upgrade
kojo87, firstly, at least wait around for the 5900 dual-GPU series if you currently have 2x 4870s. A single 5970 is going to be more efficient than 2x 5870s.
@kojo
No. You've already wasted too much money on computer games.
I'm debating weather to wait till after blackfriday to buy a new video card.. I was sore bummed when the price of the 5850s and 5870s went up $40 dollars each because of Supply & Demand... I will go for a 5770 XFX probably, but don't know if I should wait till after then or not..
Currently have;
AMD AM2 5600X2
*will upgrade to AMD AM3 Phenom II 955
4GB DDR
*will have to upgrade ram for new processor
Gigabyte GMA 790XUD4P
VisionTek ATI Radeon 3870
I have performance issues and just can't take it anymore! I think the video card will hold me over for a while.. Or should I do the processor/ram upgrades first? Personally I think the processor and ram will just keep getting cheaper.. The video card will stay at same price point for a while..
@kojo,
No, it's only worth it when your cards are 3 generations old.
@ Doug
Are F-ing kidding me? The problem is CLEARLY your graphics adapter... A 4770 for about $100 would do better than that thing you have...
Processor is secondary in gaming (except for GTA 4 and another game or 2...). The important is a good graphics adapter.
If your having performance issues in general it's propbably your SATA Disk. Check the cables. Sorry for the revelation but SATA sucks...
The temptation is hard...but I can wait until nVidia kicks this thing out. Of course I'll be pissed if it's not any better and I end up with a 5870 anyway, but at least I'll know I got the better of the two cards.
@pnomadewolf
You seem to be a bit...misguided. Let me clarify.
1) His video card is plenty decent to hold out with for now. It's the higher end of the HD 3k series, probably fairly close to a GTX 260 in performance guessing off the top of my head.
2) The vast majority of MMOs benefit from a CPU as much as the video card, due to their busy network stack. But generally you are right.
3) SATA sucks? Are you delusional? There is a reason all enterprise storage systems are migrating to SATA and SAS based SANs...I mean I would attempt to argue this further, but...wow...please tell me you are trolling? I don't see how someone can be so ignorant of years of benchmarks and stats....
I'm surprised there hasn't really been any flame wars after a page of comments...but oh well...
@Kamozaki
The Radeon 5770 and 4870 are quite close to the GTX260 in performance.....but this does not apply to the 3870 with less than half the shaders and lower memory speed.
I dunno pnomadewolf was saying about SATA though either.....I mean what are you supposed to use SCSI? - This is just a standard consumer system.
@Doug
I would definitely recommend upgrading your gfx card first, and perhaps plopping in a cheap Phenom II later. I have a 5770 myself and am quite happy with its general performance, power efficiency, and quietness. Crossfire scaling on the 5770 is quite good as well and 2X5770 can pretty much match the 5870 in terms of performance and it will actually end up costing less as well.
btw I play my games at 1080p...5770 provides pretty decent framerates at max details though I cannot use 4XAA on some games. One 5770 barely does the job for now, and adding another when I have the money will provide the boost I want later down the road.
@Doug: You don't need to upgrade your RAM to use Phenom II. Whether you meant because of compatibility or to keep up. What you ave is fine.
And your GPU is better off than your CPU. You should upgrade that first, and it'll be cheaper anyway.
The 3870 is NOT a weak card, sheesh.
Have you checked for malware and spyware and stuff? Maybe try doing a fresh install on another hard disk/partition and run the same tests.
@ Mark
this is very true
the 3870's value was NOT EVEN CLOSE to the 4850/4870.
The 4850 and 4870 offer basically the same performance as a GTX260 for a FAR lower price. They're very very good deals. They were when they came out, and they still are today.
The 3000-series was a massive disappointment. The 3870 did NOT offer a great value. It was weak in comparison to the competing NVIDIA card, and it pales in comparison to the 4850 or 4870.
The 3870 is weak crap.
He he he. We ATI folk have so much to be thankful for this holiday season.
But can it play Crysis?
The question is, what resolution and framerate.
S... TF... U...
It plays two instances of crysis, without dropping a frame under 50.
@myself
Ii should say "two instances at once"
@ilikespie: No, no; you were right the first time... you can play the game twice before the changes in temperature cause the chip to fail catastrophically.
Zing! Oh man, I think I just saw Jen-Hsun Huang's hair move!
... I kid 'cause I love, folks. The last time I bought a video card (nine years ago), Nvidia was king... it's kinda sad to see them screwing up the way they are.... :-(
Whatever it takes to ensure its as bug free as possible and has good drivers this time.
... not holding my breath.
After /upgrade/ to ATI I was disdained at quality of their drivers. But in the end overlap of reliably working features (nVidia v. ATI drivers) is more than comparable.
Its all about timing, obviously Nvidia doesn't think its had enough time to properly Fermi'nt. Needs a few more months like a nice whiskey.
Darn, I was planning an nVidia GT300-themed house party and everything! I was going to call my friends over, discuss the finer points of the new GPU, eat green-coloured nvidia cake and then settle down for a great LAN party, gaming on our new GT300 cards! (though obviously the games wouldn't include Modern Warfare 2). :/
Ohhh ZING!
If you're going to do it, you should do it on the best hardware there is.
Oh crap, no drivers.
now its a race to see who can push back their product release date further
so far intels larrabee is clearly winning
I think Larrabee will also win the "Who sucks the most" award. Especially in general performance/power consumption...
Does it really matter? I don't see a single game that won't work fine on a $250 card these days (Crysis might be an exception, but its boring during second run) and I don't remember a lot of games for Dx11 either...
> I don't see a single game that won't work fine on a $250 card
If you can be conservative with resolution, even $150 cards (gf9800/gf265 or 4850/etc) are more than sufficient.
ATI's 4770 ($120 now) reviews were pretty amazing: even at 1920x1200 most games (without pushing settings too high) played OK.
I wish my HD4890 would let me play Shattered Horizon at those resolutions, it kicks my computers ass 4 times harder than crysis.
Old news, we know it's been delayed for at least a few days now. Semi-Accurate exposed them several times. There won't be products on the shelves by Jan 2010, more than likely Feb at the earliest.
http://www.semiaccurate.com/2009/11/02/nvidia-finally-gets-fermi-a2-taped-out/
It's going to be April at the earliest before this ships in quantity.
I believe nothing from Semi-Accurate, especially when it comes to nVidia. The owner has some sort of personal vendetta against them
@EGOvoruhk: I recognize most of the words (worked for couple of years near semi industry) and what is said in the article actually make sense. Conclusion also maps to what's happening: nVidia instead of showing working prototype cards spins PR.
They can't produce enough wood screws on time to meet the demand.
*puts on flame suit*
This is bad news...
On the other hand, the longer I wait, the more money I can save up =D
These cards will have an an impact like the 8800's 3 years ago!
8800/8600 have fallen in price pretty quickly. That was one of the deciding factors. With gf2xx cards, nVidia still manages to keep prices high thanks to the simple fact that most games run well on gf9800 and few gamers see need to upgrade.
For gf3xx cards to catch up they have to be extremely aggressive with the prices. I think they have earned enough from their mobile division to support price war with ATI next year.
@Dummy
Are you kidding?
nVidia's market share has plummeted this year and is now below that of ATI. In addition, many of the systems that feature nVidia GPUs over the past year have been 'freebees' to get ODM's back on nVidias side after the 8xxx ball solder fiasco.
nVidia is NOT in a good position right now.
Now the 3xx is supposed to bring everything back together for them, but wasn't it reported a few months ago that their yield for first spin on the new silicon was below 1%? Thats abysmal, even for a first run.
I won't go anywhere near nVidia at the moment, it's a total bag of hurt.
Oh, it doesn't help that iIve lost three 8xxx GPUs and a 7400 in the past 12 months either, probably all as a result of the same ball issue they had.
you damm right if ATI 5870 is about the same performs as a ATI 4870 x2
and NVIDIA Fermi is about 8x times faster then a NVIDIA Tesla C1060 in double precision Fermi is going to on top as the most powerful.
except no games use double precision...meaning we have actually no credible information on its performance.
Why are chips so colorful?
Even though I already have a 5770 I still wish NVIDIA would get this stuff rolled out already.....
That way I can get another 5770 for cheaper...
This mixes well with what several Nvidia employees told me at the Halloween party. Next GeForce Lan in January 2010. And as we all know, GeForce lans = New video cards.
Yet again another stupid article.
Nvidia has repeatedly stated that it would release it GPUs in January; where were you engadget? In a closet?
Cough, cough. You disappoint me Engadget; weak.
If you want a real enemy to boast against pick intel; there a much bigger threat.
As for as Nvidia is concerned, they have realized there mistakes and they will match ATI's prices, but with better performances; even eventually the low cost video cards like the 4870...what a killer card.
I can wait. I've had too many bad experiences with Ati in the past.
yeah um this is a lie... they just showed the A2 silicon today rendering unigine's DirectX 11 Heaven benchmark. A3 is due after that.
First fiscal Q1 of 2010. NOT 2011...
