Google Navigation hacked onto T-Mobile G1 (updated)
It's always a good sign when a device-specific product release becomes the focal point of the XDA development community: it means you've got a winner on your hands. Not that anyone ever doubted the intense demand for Google's new turn-by-turn Navigation introduced exclusively on Motorola's DROID. No more. Brave souls have now tweaked the original code to run on the original Android device, the HTC G1 running on T-Mobile. Anecdotal reports suggest that it's working great -- a good sign that we'll see a cooked ROM unveiled just as soon as feverish fingers can package the new code.
Update: Photographic evidence has arrived. Enjoy.

how many ROMs until I've reached my destination?
google navigation hacked onto T-Mobile brickphone
A year later, and the G1 still lives thanks to the great work going on at xda. I feel kinda proud being a g1 owner, helping android from its baby steps into a full blown gps cooperation killer.
@Lightspeed
Stop embarrassing yourself. Everyone can see your previous comments. You seem a little bitter that your stuck with an WinMo phone. What's the matter, dad doesn't let you upgrade?
tell me about it, beast... ive gone through three G1's and currently using a dev phone... android was my first step into the smartphone world, and i gotta say i've developed quite a soft spot for it, ya digg
(and im back to life, engadget! THANK YOU for finally making my account accountable again -___-.. took long enough.. anger's still BLAZING here, ya digg)
Now more users have the better navigation system on the mobiles. Rock brave souls.
I cant wait until they integrate this Google Navigation app into the iPhone so companies like Tom Tom cant rip you off $100 and waist 1.3GB of your precious memory. G1 owners must be really excited.
Don't hold your breath. Or hold it. whatever your funeral pal.
@Travis >> "last time i checked symbian is the largest mobile OS. massive opportunities awaits...."
Yes... there are more devices running a Symbian OS than any other platform. However... not all of them are newer, touchscreen smartphones. A large portion of Symbian devices are still non-qwerty candybar phones and flip-phones.
So, an app written to take advantage of a new smartphone won't deliver the same experience on a tiny flip-phone... if you have to use the D-Pad to scroll around and type in an address using T9.
This is the exact same discussion that comes up whenever iPhone sales numbers are mentioned... "Symbian whoops Apple's ass!"
Absolutely correct... if you compare the few iPhone models to the hundreds of Symbian devices worldwide... smartphones, flip-phones, candybar phones, free phones. It's all relative.
There is a version of Google Maps for such phones as the Nokia N95... but does it work on all of those other Symbian phones?
Sorry... Travis was so grayed out that I replied to the wrong comment...
Actually, no offense, but I'm hoping google never gives this to iPhone users. I never liked my iPhone and I am thrilled that Android is starting to look nice. I really want google to kick apple's butt with Android and an app exclusive like this would REALLY make that more likely for them. So many iPhone users are so smug (I know, not all you guys!) and i would love to see Android have something that is just without-a-doubt better.

Yawn.
Please let me know when ported to symbian.
That's particularly bad timing, what with the post of Samsung dropping Symbian right before this one.
as useful as an iphone fanboy
But even if Symbian is dying there's still 2-3 years of life left in the X6s, Omnia HDs and N97s out there.
last time i checked symbian is the largest mobile OS.
massive opportunities awaits....
Can't wait till Cyanogen gets his hands all over this
yikes, sounds like he would be stepping all over the C&D territory by adding this to his rom.
he's been a pussy lately would not even look at 2.0 in the source tree google scared him shitless now he just kinda sits there steering from the corner of the room real quiet like he just experienced some nightmare on elm street shit its sad no u forget he's even there
really painful too see i miss you cya :(

Except the Android 2.0 source tree isn't even out yet.
I've been considering switching to Verizon from T-mo, and getting the Droid, but I've just done the math and it would cost me over $1500 in the next two years just to switch, while getting less minutes, the same data, and 5k texts instead of unlimited. If this ends up available soon I'll probably just pick up a G1 instead.
How? What plan are you on now and what plan would you be switching to?
Droid is coming to T-Mobile soon enough:

If this is the case and it runs on Android 1.6, why not just release the latest maps with navigation on the marketplace for G1 owners?
No doubt Verizon has an exclusive deal so that the software only appears on their network.
Why give away something for free when you can force as many people as possible to buy a new phone to get it?
im trying to do this now, i finished all of the steps but i get a fc when opening the new maps.apk, im thinking the theme i have on may be interfering.
...just hose it off dummy.
spend all your time on sunday making sandwiches for the rest of the week, then you're prepared you turkey!
how close am I to your face? :D
out of curiosity, is this only for G1s running the Android 2.0 rom? any chance this would work on an Eris? I'm thinking of picking one up, then returning it (I think you get 30 days) before the Dragon/Passion comes out. Although if I brick it or something, they probably wouldn't take it back haha
@glazerorama: I installed this last night on my G1 running the latest cyanogen release, which is running donut.
For force closes, make sure you're using the gsm sholes Maps apk or the generic 3.2.0 that was released on xda. I still haven't been able to get the Droid one to work, since it's odexed to the Droid.
For your health!
希望能在IPHONE上有用,可惜中国的地图不准,怎么办??
in China?? You may ask for destroying that huge wall first.....
Hey, none of that here. It probably won't come to the iphone; apple will most likely prevent it. You should move to a better country if you want to be able to navigate around where you live.
But why is it not allowed in China??
@wywywywy don't you understand that? the government doen't allow that accurate map data on the internet.... so ask the government first!!
Android 和 iPhone 是不同的操作系统。 Motorola Droid 是 Verizon 仅由。 对不起, 我同情。
We are the original Android, we are G1. :D
Like the T-100, the G1 keeps on proving that newer models may have sexier designs- but it can still triumph over the whatever the future throws at it because of the hard work of committed programmer's and designer's who made something with the intent that it was here to stay.
The Resistance will transcends and wins over SkyNet not because of newer hardware, but because it makes more efficient use of what it has no?
This navgations look hooking.
Works like a charm :) Some people are having issues but it was smooth for me.
Well this is super exciting. It's stuff like this that I find encouraging...even if for some reason Google doesn't push out an official update for the G1, the awesome mod community will have our backs.
Damn I wanted this so bad this week when I was visiting England. The pre-paid SIM i bought didn't do data (3G/GPRS) and I didn't want to get raped on roaming charges with my HTC Magic. Go XDA!
Hooray, my out-of-date G1 is once again relevant! God bless those hard-working hackers at xda.
My partner just got the Moment, and without the xda crowd working on the hacks/increasing functionality of the phone, things move slowly. The phone is fast, but still 1.5 and to tether takes some work.
-m.
So wait a minute. Is this navigation ONLY for DROID owners or is it coming OTA to all 2.0 users?
laurel!
OK, so I just got a My Touch 3G yesterday, I am loving the phone, can I run the Google Maps GPS software on this, I really want GPS on this phone, where can I download it from if so, thanks!
Actually ATLANTION your a dumb ass! Cyanogen hasn't done anything with 2.0 because google have not released the source code yet which is what he needs to alter the ROM. Know your facts before your run your mouth next time PAL!!!
