AMD spells out the future: heterogeneous computing, Bulldozer and Bobcats galore
Believe it or not, it's just about time for AMD to start thinking about its future. We know -- you're still doing your best to wrap that noodle around Congos and Thubans, but now it's time to wonder how exactly Leo, Llano and Zambezi (to name a few) can fit into your already hectic schedule. At an Analyst Day event this week, the chipmaker removed the wraps on its goals for 2010 and 2011, and while it's still focusing intently on Fusion (better described as heterogeneous computing, where "workloads are divided between the CPU and GPU"), it's the forthcoming platforms that really have us worked up. For starters, AMD is looking into Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) configurations, which "represent the combined capabilities of [practically any] two separate processors." We're also told that the firm may actually introduce its Bulldozer (architecture for mainstream machines) and Bobcat (architecture for low-power, ultrathin PCs) platforms more hastily than similar ones have been rolled out in the past, which demonstrates an effort to really target the consumer market where Intel currently reigns. Frankly, we're jazzed about the possibilities, so hit the links below for a deep dive into what just might be powering your next (or next-next) PC.

Great news for consumers and PC enthusiasts. Keep fightin' the good fight AMD.
yes it's about time they waited to long they gotta play catch up but im sure they will do well
Yah and note the release year...let alone date. 2011. And we can all be sure that it will come out January 1, 2011 as well.
This is just more PPT marketing by AMD. Wake me when they have a shipping product to get excited over.
I think Crunchpad is going to use AMD
The sheer number of names makes it sound like something broadcast by The Onion.
And Intel will still be kicking their a** when the world ends in 2012, Zambezi or no Zambezi.
YOU'RE A LIAR!! Zambezi will save us from Nibiru!
Where is the news ENGADGET about Intel paying AMD 1.25B for settling their dispute????
Be patient, young grasshopper.

AMD needs a new logo, some advertising, and to stop agreeing to be the chip of choice for the bottom of the bin computers. Then people might start wanting to buy them again.
Lets be fair here, they have nowhere near the advertising capital that Intel does, not even a tenth. And what they do make in revenue has to go towards R&D, we all know it needs to.
The real challenge is getting programmers to understand how these new chips with the GP APU work, and program accordingly. Or not, I have no idea how that happens.
AMD should list the chipsets these processors will support also. It could be a huge advantage to them to keep the AM3 chipset, if possible. I'm tired of Intel switching chipsets every 6 months. I was thinking about getting a X58 board, but its not going to support anything in future other than Extremely expensive Edition I9 chip, so there's no upgrade path for me.
Bulldozer will sit in socket AM3r2 (will probably be called AM3+, AM2+ was initially called AM2r2)
If it's like the transition to AM2+, Bulldozer CPU's should run in AM3 boards with limitations.
Heterogeneous computing is how God would want it to be.
Even though AMD has made a a few notable errors and has lagged behind Intel over the past several years, they still appear to maintain a forward thinking approach matched with a spirit of innovation, and that is always a heartening thing. Go AMD!
