Netflix hitting internet-capable Sony BRAVIA sets today
Good news for folks who against all odds don't have a home theater Netflix streaming option yet, and yet inexplicably own an internet-connected Sony BRAVIA TV: Netflix just went live. It just takes applying the latest software update and you're in business. BRAVIA owners were promised the update back in July, and let us be the first to point and laugh insensitively at PS3 owners who have use a "DVD" to get Netflix working on their Cell-powered supermachines.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Will be trying this when I get home! I know my XBR9 52" will do it, but I hope my 52" XBR6 will also have an update!
The PS3 option is nice though for the XBR6
Good for the states but Here in Canada there's no netflixs :(
"let us be the first to [...] laugh insensitively at PS3 owners who have use a "DVD" to get Netflix working on their Cell-powered supermachines."
Let us be the first to laugh insensitively at Engadget writers who have make grammar fail.
Is the XBR9 worth it against the Samsung 750B?
A lot of people are saying the 750 B. revision is the best LCD out there, and right now Amazon has $200 off at final page in checkout, and that deal ends today. Somebody help! I need to buy a TV in 3 hours or less!
@ Evan - I think they have do it deliberately.
For all you guys B*tching about the disc the only reason the disc is there is cause MS/netflix contract as soon as thats up in 2010 there will be a Firmware update.
Funny, I've got a Roku, a 360, and a PS3 all connected to a TV that can stream Netflix as well.
The most telling thing in this story is the fact that Sony hasn't branched out into this space yet. They dipped their toes in with PSN on the PS3, as it is an amazingly capable movie rental service. But, it seems they've just given up and thrown in the towel to Netflix.
Sony is a movie company too.
Yep. At this point, I really wish I'd waited on the whole netflix streaming device thing. Got the roku, then the NXE came out with netflix, then the PS3 a few weeks ago and now my bravia. Just a matter of time till it hits the mobile market.
What about Blu-Ray?
This pretty much brings to pass the reality we all predicted when the format war dragged on forever. Physical media are dead, and now we're stuck with even more heavily compressed downloadable dogcrap that not only lookcs bad, but gives you no ownership of the content you BUY.
GJ, everybody.
You buy steaming media from netflix?
Information Central:
Agreed. I would rather have the best quality audio/video possible. And now that bluray prices are within DVD range....it's a great time to buy. You cannot compare bluray to Netflix streaming....1080P/Dolby TrueHD vs 720P/2 channel audio....
Problem is, most people don't care about quality. They just can't see the difference and don't care.
I still haven't jumped on the Netflix bandwagon. What I hear allot of is that the streaming is extremely limited. I'll pass for now.
Limited?? Netflix is the best thing since sliced bread. We watch movies almost every night and the only limitation I see is how many hours of sleep I need for work the next day.
I have never seen a company more aggressively committed to expanding its platform as netflix.
Now, if they could only get the go-ahead to expand their streaming content. I've had a go at their free trial, but the streaming choices are, for the most part, b-movies it seems.
There are actually some really good movies on the streaming side of things but you have to be willing to look for them, They are expanding their streaming choices, and When I first started using Netflix streaming two years ago I was limited to a few hours of streaming a month It takes on Average three days for the discs to make it the 550 mile round trip to the nearest distribution hub in Anchorage Alaska so being able to stream videos, some even from my DVD/Blu-Ray Queue is worth the price I pay, and I certainly like not having to venture out to the nearest overpriced rental outlet in the cold to find something to watch.
Slacker.com is getting more and more out there. Now on Sony TV's, Sony Blu-rays, blackberry, iphone, droid....G2. Just waiting on the PS3 now from them!
Slacker is awesome, but Netflix is the topic.
oh shiiii---
just but a bravia yesterday :D
I thought it was coming to the PS3 and xbox
what is with the cheap shot for the ps3? i own a roku, a ps3, an xbox and a new bravia, the ps3 does it best, its the smoothest and highest quality stream of them all... engadget consistently makes incorrect dumb fanboy statements these days, maybe its time to find a new site to read, this is just the dumbest thing i've read all day "nd let us be the first to point and laugh insensitively at PS3 owners who have use a "DVD" to get Netflix working on their Cell-powered supermachines." seriously...go jerk your xbox off, i, personally, will be selling mine as it's totally worthless now.. using a disc is not only not a big deal, its temporary...grow up
Relax, im sure it was just a bad joke.
It's all Sony, baby; chill out!
I have to agree, What kind of BS is that? I was about to buy a roku about a week or so before the PS3 netflix disk was announced. My brand new Samsung 55" B8000 dose not support netflix! I am OK with that considering the widgets are so slow that even trying to access youtube is a nightmare. I can't imagine what netflix would be like on my B8000.
Disk or no Disk my PS3 saved me cash and time accessing Netflix.
• I don't have to pay for Xbox Live "Gold" on my PS3
• I don't have to suffer through slow menus
• I didn't have to pay $100 for ANOTHER device to attach to my TV
• I didn't have to pay the "Sony tax" on a BRAVIA TV.
I would love to see if the Sony widget is any faster then the widgets on my B8000. Not to come off as a PS4 fan boy, there are a lot of live arcade games i would love to play that are not offered on my PS3 but i will go out on a limb and say the PS3 netfix disk is a darn good solution. Even if my b8000 offerd netflix i would probably choose to use the disk. The menus are clean, quick and the streaming quality is great.
The YouTube experience on the B8000 vs my Apple TV is like night and day. The Quality of streaming is about the same but the interface on the B8000 is a joke. it's slow and unresponsive. Just searching for a video takes too much time, Even loading the YouTube widget can take about 10 min. that's just unacceptable. I wonder if the BRAVIA experience will be similar.

dude you mad?
Ok, Netflix, seriously, you're everywhere but Linux. If you want my money, make that happen.
Have you never heard of watching a video within a web browser? I know it is a pretty new thing, but you have to get with the times, man.
I'm pretty sure that Netflix uses Silverlight, which is unavailable for Linux
I got the update this morning. I was wondering what the update was for. This is the 3rd device I have now that has netflix.
All it took was a couple minutes to type out a compairison of the three and this would have been an interesting, insightful, and useful comment. Instead it just makes you sound like a braggart and wastes space.
TV needs Android
Fanboyish comments there. Maybe if you mentioned the reason for the disc is because of an agreement between Netflix and Microsoft, and if the PS3 had it built in it would be a violation of it. You almost sound like your saying that its worse that the PS3 has Netflix capability, than if it didn't. The half explained, uneducated so called "witty" remarks are getting old.
very much so agree here
DON'T LAUGH AT ME.
I knew about netflix for years and only recently signed up because i got a ps3 slim at launch and i figured it was a cheap way to add to my investment. also got gamefly recently.
if it wasnt for netflix on ps3 i wouldnt bother with netflix lol too much work getting up and mailing stuff back and forth.
Wow, heaven forbid you check your mail. To much work my ass.....
Wow. With people this lazy, it is a wonder Blockbuster is still in business.
i dont get mail that often (netflix a couple bills and a ton of junk mail) but i watch alot of movies. does this make more sense?
Can someone explain how this works or post a reference link? I have a Bravia and would like to set this up, was planning on getting a PS3 to make it happen though. Is there additional hardware you need in addition to your TV? I know I have BraviaSync and some other stuff I hadn't figured out yet, but I just bought it last weekend
Your grammar is so bad that your post is unintelligible.
"who have use a DVD"
What does have use mean? By the way, it is not a DVD, it is a BD.
Actually it's a "Blue Ray DVD"
According to Wikipedia, it is "Blu-ray Disc".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
Whats everyone so pissy about. I own all three systems and yes i agree that its kinda dumb to have to use an optical disc to stream media over the internet. Though i dont need to cuz i can do it through any one of my computers or my xbox and now my PS3. But quite frankly the easiest route is what im looking for and the PS3(currently) isnt it. When they fix it, fine. But they havent yet so i will also point and laugh.
Potential is seriously overrated and leads people to pointlessly sit and wait for things that may never happen. When the PS3 can stream Netlfix natively like everyone else you can cheer and whoop and hollar all you want.
Still not on my HP MediaSmart TV. Wasn't this supposed to happen for HP a few years ago? wtf HP, wtf....
Now when will we Panasonic Viera customers get Netflix?
seriously, Panasonic really need to get their act together and begin competing with these other brands.
Is this the sign of dvd going the way of the vcr?
....yeah, none of the other netflix set-top setups were, but this one.
OH BABY, better watch out now DVD.
*rolls eyes* - did you just crawl out of a cave or something?
I think a sign of DVD going the way of the VCR was picking up a Blu-Ray disc for $5 less than the same title on DVD recently...

On my bravia XBR9; youtube and now netflix are as smooth as butter. It's actually pretty fast in getting netflix through the menu's, just add it to your favorites, press the favorites remote key and netflix is good to go. I think something's got to be wrong with your Samsung, because 10 minutes is a joke for a youtube widget. Should be pretty much instantaneous.
Overall, using the queue feature at netflix online to send your choices to the TV is pretty slick. Just wish there was a way to figure out how to make some of the 4:3 content stretch, because the wide remote button that normally does this for everything else doesn't work with netflix.
That's interesting the 4:3 content on the PS3 defaults to 16:9. I have to force my TV into 4:3 mode to make it look right. I don't mind so much for animation and cartoons, but for old 4:3 programing i have to have the proper aspect ration.
Soon, Netflix will be embedded in my toilet. No, seriously.
By placing themselves in a shitload of devices, Netflix has secured being relevant for the next few years
I happen to like being able to stream netflix to my PS3 even if it requires a disc. My television/computer monitor (Samsung T260HD) is not capable of doing it on its own and after a few days of using the disc on my PS3 I can say it streams video much better than my MacBook Pro, and I can now go a head and uninstall MS silverlight and hope that my browsers return to normal.
Awesome
I love Netflix. What you can't stream you can get mailed to you. We use the 360 for it at my house and my boyfriend’s house. The PS3, Sony in general, just seems to be behind everyone else. Twitter, Facebook, and last.fm will be on the 360 soon, probably within the next week or two. I wouldn't trade my 360 for a PS3, nor would I trade my current TV for a Sony.
It is interesting that you think being "ahead" means having twitter, facebook, and netflix access on a gaming system that has no built in wifi, an aging DVD drive, charges for internet access, and a failure rate greater than 50%
Maybe so. I have Wi-Fi and do not feel that less than $50.00 a year is a lot for Gold. Mine hasn't failed so the 50% isn't applicable to me. My boyfriends did and he fixed it himself in a couple hours.
Maybe my "ahead" isn't the same as yours. I don't pay for cable, or a phone line. I pay for Internet, Netflix, and have a Magic Jack. I do own a boatload of stock and continue to buy it on what I save monthly. I don't own a lot of gadgets. I want the most for my money and the 360 has delivered very well for me. My boyfriend has a 46" TV and a PS3. We use the PS3 to watch DVDs at his house. That's about it and it isn't often because we stream movies much more than we watch DVDs.
Facebook and Twitter are VERY important to me for business reasons. Maybe you do not use either, but there are a lot of people that do.
You are welcome to put me in whatever "interesting" or "uninteresting" category that you would like.
I hope that you enjoy you weekend, Chris.
Cindy
It wasn't my intention to place you into any category. I dabble in Facebook from time to time on my notebook and blackberry, but refuse to make a twitter account for various reasons. Your business interest in these sites is a somewhat unfortunate, but understandable necessity with today's markets.
Though I disagree with your perception that you are "getting the most out of your money" with the 360, if it works for you than thats great. Enjoy those gadgets with your boyfriend.
I guess I hurt Paul Miller's feelings since he felt the need to delete my previous post
And let us point and laugh at Paul Miller who doesn't even pretend to know that the PS3 uses a blu-ray disc, not DVD, running BD-Live to side step an exclusive contract Netflix had with Microsoft for game consoles. What is that saying about open your mouth and proving yourself a fool?
A more interesting article might have been about Sony working with Netflix to get their streaming on Sony's devices? Maybe you're too anti-Sony to report objectively. There was a day when that was the foundation of journalism.
Will this update work on the XBR8 series? I'm considering buying one.
@Ribs.
I think you would need the sony bravia internet link purchased separately in order to get the XBR8 to work with netflix
Thanks... The more I dig, the more that seems to be the case
Will not budge to HD streaming Netflix.
Will continue to play Blu-Ray movies on my handy DIGISTOR USB Blu-Ray burner.
Will keep getting better quality than Netflix. Ha.
NETFLIX + Sony Bravia + Playstation 3 + 3D TV (Future Prospects) = Very Good deal
Anyone know of where I can find a list of sony bravia TV's with this firmware update to watch Netflix on?
and in related news, Blockbuster announces you can now download movies on an SD card in-store, that plays only in a box they also sell. Oh, and the movies expire after 24 hours.
The Blockbuster board lives in a nice cave...
