KAIST's HUBO shows off some newfound dexterity, hides emotions behind ill-fitting motorcycle helmet
Sometimes when we see the seemingly slow advance of Honda's ASIMO, the inherent limitations of WowWee toys, or the purposefully limited one-off research projects of universities, we start to give up hope of being super best pals with a humanoid robot this century; hope of partaking in whimsical 80s movie hijinks, hand-in-metal-hand. This little video of the Korean Institute of Advanced Science and Technology's recent advances on its HUBO project therefore serves as a bit of a "hope refresher," allowing us to once again re-imagine those aforementioned scenes of whimsy with a metallic bot that can handle a sword and walk at an almost-useful pace, while inexplicably wearing a smallish, visored helmet. Sure, there's a long way to go, but we'd just like to say that when the robot apocalypse doesn't happen and we realize how much we really have in common with these machines we've built to look like us, that somewhere in late 2009 this video helped us keep on believing.

domo arigato mr roboto
yup, someone beat me to it.
DOMO, domo
He cant catch me!
Asimo has the cute factor and gives that more intelligent feel. This one can just do the bare basics from what the video showed.
Although really like all robot things the best way to see which is best is in a fight to the death... which I'm sure Asimo would win (and we wonder why they resent us).
Paul's acceptance of the robots scares me though.
Paul's their overlord. Of course he accepts them.
And especially when he talks about our sword-wielding, uh, compatriots, yeah, that's the word!
man that thing was smoooooth. and those hands opening and closing reminded me of terminator!
Hopefully when they do the speech synthesis software, they won't screw it up as badly as they did for the Terminatah.
scary how far along robotic tech has come. how long until they become self-aware?
We already have.
i know we all joke and say
"I for one welcome our robotic overlords" and stuff like that, but I'm seriously
starting to consider making preparations for the fight, cause I know im not going down
without one
------THE ЯESISTANCE
luckily (for use mere mortals) we have a weapon that will destroy machines...it can cover a vast distance once triggered, and people wont be harmed....behold...the EMP.
unfortunately people rely on electrical medical devices. EMPs still affect people. thats why we built them in the first place.
@andres
the lives of a few is worth sacrificing to save the billions... then they shall die in honor!

Hi, I represent URMOM. We are an advocacy group for the fair treatment of organic based milfs. If you fail to comply, I'll be forced to open a can on your ass and continue to do your mom all day everyday. I would like to remind you that even misdemeanor crimes against organic milfs carry a death penalty if convicted. Thank you.
What's with the waving of that long weapon-like object?
"Damn it, they are supposed to be our faithful servants!" ---- Chandler Bing
Glad to read (above) that I'm not the only person who finds it slightly disconcerting to see a robot waving a mock-sword around... how long until that becomes a gun..? then an built-in gun..? scary stuff, kiddywinks.
Or until it has shoulder missiles and carries a Gatling gun.
I like how they used Yamaha DX 7 sounds straight from the '80s for the soundtrack.
Also, this thing totally is an ASIMO knockoff.
The Albert Einstein version is lolz:

Seriously, this thing is so menacing, I think its prime directive is to search out emo kids and head punch them...
LOL RE:Helmet joke
I want to see the robofingers do Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
Quick! Somebody ring up Sarah Connor! These are the beta stages of Skynet.
Amazing. If only he had a cape on you could call him Super Hero!

HUBO casts fire!
How long before a "Tajuu Kage Bunshin no Jutsu"?? That thing could beat Naruto at hand gestures.
NINJA ROBOT!!
Yeah but where is "HUBO Flying Roundhouse Kick to Enemy Face"? Total Fail.
Wow, those are huuuuge thunder thighs
KAIST stands for 'Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology'.
Not 'Korean Institute of Advanced Science and Technology'.
Just wanted to clarify that.
This is why I built a portable EMP gun.
