Practically speaking, you can't really switch carriers in the U.S., at least with a GSM phone, since T-Mobile and AT&T utilize different 3G frequencies. Sure, the phone and crappy EDGE will work, but what's the point of shelling out $$$ for a smartphone if you can't get 3G?

I just went online to AT&T and configured an iPhone that would be good for me... 450 minutes, 1500 texts and the required data plan. It comes out to $85 a month... which is about $2000 over the 2 years.

In my part of the north pole, we the monthly prices differ depending on if you're subsidising a phone through them or not. Battery. On the N900 one can actually buy a back up battery for about $40 dollars and PUT IT IN YOURSELF. I will not send any phone into the maker for "battery repair". Two to three days down time and about a $100 dollars latter you get your iphone back. Nope. The first major software update is supposed to include portrait mode rotation (including the web browser). There's actually an internal build mentioned on the Maemo forums (and a couple youtube videos) that show it.

Speakers: not many people will make use of these but almost eveyone will want to put their phone in their pocket
Memory slot: that works against the Iphone but not the Droid or other smaller phones with Micro SD slots
Full QWERTY: Droid has one even if it isnt the greatest thing in the world. Still works wonderful
IR: good point but I do have a remote
5MP camera: Droid has one with dual flash too. Works really well now too.
Battery: again, beats the Iphone but equal to the Droid
Stylus: I havent missed it yet from my HTC touch
32 gigs of internal space: Theres no excuse for the droid not that have that. Or any other top end phone for that matter
TV and FM radio: WiFi and 3G
