Zepto Computers files for bankruptcy
Zepto Computers may not have exactly made a huge name for itself during its relatively short existence, but it did stand out from the pack somewhat with some high-end, unusually understated gaming laptops (amongst other things). That apparently wasn't enough to keep the Danish company afloat in the tumultuous computer business, however, as it has now announced that it's filed for bankruptcy after not being able to secure some much needed financing. It's not saying much more than that at the moment though, and it still seems to be business as usual on its website -- though you might just want to hold off an any purchase you were planning.[Thanks, Ian]

@Balbasour
Exactly.
Well after Gummo and Zeppp died his heart just wasn't into the act anymore.
Engadget, what happened! This will take some serious getting used too.
@Guy
I concur! >.
@Guy
O.O replies are HIDDEN!? :o
Do you know how many people are going to say something that was already said? *twitches and explodes*
I hate when you hear about a company for the first time, it's the last time.
@sip I have a zepto, and trust me, after 2,5 years it is still one of the greatest computers I have ever bought. All my geek friends also bought one after I got mine. Because of their high-customizability and extremely good price/quality tag they were not meant to be in a world dominated by HP, Acer and of course Apple :'( RIP Zepto and thank you for my beloved znote6214w
Never Heard of them. Did they make their own Laptops or did they just use the clevos/sager laptops like Novatech and Rock in the UK.
BTW love the new layout but it did blow my mind.
bummer... looked like some nice laptops.
(ps i really had nothing to say I just wanted to see if engadget improved their comment system. here's to hoping.)
@Victor
So did I. It seems Mildly better.
testing comment system!
Maybe if they hadn't put all their eggs in one, expensive gaming laptop basket, they would still be here.
I had never heard of them either until i started college recently and one of my classmates had one. Sweet looking machine.
Never heard of 'em
Never heard of them. Could that have anything to do with it?
Damn, sorry to hear about this. I bought a 6625WD a couple of years ago, with an SSD upgrade it's still been very fast so far (except for meh performance in games, due to the 8600M GT). Nice simple design laptops, at incredibly good prices - my lappie was more powerful than a 15-inch MBP, and has a better 1680x1050 screen, but cost £400 less.
That font on "Zepto" sure looks like the one Sony uses for PlayStation product logos...
As I told Engadget when I found this, the timing couldn't be worse for me. My 2 year old 6625WD laptop was awesome until a few weeks ago when it blew up. I was in the process of getting a new motherboard sent out to me to fit myself (as close as getting an email asking to confirm the warranty dates, following which they'd send me the bits I need) - something not many companies would do for an in-warranty PC.
Still, I look forward to using my £1100 paperweight.
I've know them for a long time. Actually had good relations with the top of the company. They built a brand on building machines to order. You chose from one of 10 models, and you pick the cpu, harddrive, memory, software even which wifi-card you wanted. Great support, great people, unfortunately people don't really want that today, and whilst HP, Acer and Packard-Bell floods the scandinavian computer market Zepto draw the shortest straw. R.I.P. Zepto. May your white 14" beast of a laptop rest in peace.
I loved Zepto's designs. It's a shame to see them go.
I bought a 6214w from Zepto in 2006 and it was nothing but trouble. Sent it back to them a total of 4 times, going without the laptop for over a month each and every time. On the fourth occasion they refused to replace the mobo because they considered wear and tear on the point where the AC plugs into the lappie to not be covered by warranty. It's a pretty crap paperweight really. From what I read around the traps, I don't think my experience of their product and their service was uncommon.
