Philips launches 9704 LED Pro televisions in the UK
Philips has just announced a new 9704 LED Pro line of televisions bound for the UK. The two sets promise a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a 200Hz refresh rate, and a 1-ms response time. Philips promises both models -- the 40-inch 40PFL9704 and the 46-inch 46PFL9704 -- are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than previous models, and both boast 5 HDMI ports. Both LED Pros will be available in December, with the 40-incher running £1,799 (around $2969) and the 46-inch model costing £2,499 (about $4,124).

gotta love that brushed metal finish..
What is that avatar of yours. It looks like a cat.
hey, why has the bottom of my "g" been cut off?
yeah, its a cat.. thing. i'm pretty sure that the eyes have been shopped on though. :P
Holy crap. That avatar is NUTS.
Your "g" and probably everyone else's is cut off because the line height isn't high enough - making the text smaller. Firefox Control +/- should sort it out.
Looks like chrome and glass is back in fashion.
The girl, the car, and then the TV. Will take it in that order
*grin* ... it just keeps getting better and better for us consumers :) aah the joys of technology.
i wouldn't call this price gouging on this technology that they were basically forced to finally put to market better for consumers.
i'll take two of these and wrapped in gold foil please.
Wow, that TV is be-a-u-tiful!
energy efficient but not benjamin efficient.
damn right +1
Surely you mean not Sir John efficient?
nice looking screen, I kinda like the brushed metal finish, it's an interesting television for sure
Now, what's the REAL contrast ratio? Everyone knows that hyper-inflated dynamic contrast number is a joke.
Otherwise, that looks like an awesome TV!
unless it is actually an LED TV, as in OLED, which theoretically have an infinite contrast ratio. That would explain the cost and energy efficiency, and also the fact that it is released in Europe first.
That's half right. This is not an OLED TV. They aren't nearly this big yet. However, using LED backlighting an LCD panel can be locally dimmed, leading to an effectively higher contrast ratio. The difference is that the local dimming will apply over a small area of pixels. So, while this TV can only achieve something like a 1000:1 contrast ratio between close pixels, it can probably achieve a true 5000000:1 contrast ratio between pixels on opposite ends of the set.
agreed, beautiful! I hate spending anything north of $1500 and still having something w/ a cheap, plastic finish...
i thought you had to specify LED back-lit in the UK unless its an actual LED display
Indeed. I don't even see if it's edge lit or local dimming... Of course, they're even going to try to live up to those contrast ratios, it'd better be local dimming.
Engadget missed the fact that this TV suppose to have 17 bit color processing. I want to see it next to Kuro and Laser TV.
225 Trillion colors!!!!!
wow, that's some wicked contrast!
blacks must be so dark they are black holes..
Nice finish, but for 3k wouldn't buying a plasma be a better choice?
compared to an LED? nope
Wrong. You can still get a Pioneer Elite Kuro Pro-101FD for less than $3k. That TV is still the reference monitor.
Difference between LCD and Plasma.
Ohh boy here we go again!!!!!!!! Let me help you
1) Glare - LCDs have less - Plasma have more
- What does that mean to you?
- If you are buying a TV for a living room with 5 windows in the room - you should buy LCD, if you want a flat panel for a basement - you get Plasma
2) Color gamma - Current televisions are capable of displaying only 40% of the color gamut that humans can potentially perceive.
- Most plasma do about that except for Kuro - It produces about 60%.
- LED has bumped up this number to maybe 45% but colors are just MUCH MUCH better on Kuro.
3) Energy efficiency
- Plasma will use a lot more energy than LCD and forget it when you compare that to LED.
4) Size to Cost ratio:
- Plasma "tend" to be cheaper than LCDs. Pay attention to TEND.
- I can buy 50 inch plasma for >2k and I can buy 50 inch LCD for
Phillips Tv's always look the best out of the bunch on the outside; as far as aesthics but the tv's themselves are far from the best and way overpriced. Although I would love to get a brushed metal 65" Panasonic.
yeah please specify whether it's LED-backlit or TRUE LED!
oh yeah i found it:

these are LCDs backlit w/LEDs.
I was looking few days back at XBR8 and XBR10. As you know XBR8 is Triluminous LED and XBR10 is regular LED. I personally was more lenient to purchase XBR10 just cause that picture looked better - my opinion.
I think that it would be a better to compare XBR10 to XBR12, when it comes out.
XBR8 is 120Hz and it has Bravia Engine 2.
XBR10 is 240Hz and it has Bravia Engine3.
XBR12 Triluminous LED will have 240Hz motion flow and Bravia 3, that's when I think XBR12 will have a better picture. So I guess what I am trying to say is 3LED or LED technology can only do so much if it doesn't have other technologies to support it.
how ridiculous to suggest anybody would think this was an OLED display, its 40", get a clou.
I wonder if the LED are carved out of diamond, and I wonder if the people assembling it in the factory get the same salary as the CEO's of philips, any info on that?
Half inch border. Flush glass panel screen. 1" depth, 2K off the price and were in business. I know, we wont see these prices until December 2010 (I hope).
Why is it "Pro"?
I don't understand....
Cause it's ALUMINUM - DUH
for professional TV watchers
if you like watching TV and do it all the time, some day you could win the TV watching olympics, and then go pro after that.
天啊!我對髮絲紋完全沒有抵抗了!
真想要,為什麼只有在 UK 才買的到 ;-;
The brushed metal finish is wonderful.
But really? 2K & 4K?
TVs should already be 3D, 0.3'" Thick, LED (not LCD with backlit Led) and really cheap!!
The technology exists. They are just feeding us with marketing cr*p!!!
You do realise that this TV is already available in parts of Europe and the UK, and has been since Spring this year? Phillips even gave out the PR in Feburary... http://www.digitalnewsroom.philips.com/press/9700_pr.doc
Engadget is slow as ever with the release of TV's! I remember when they announced the Panasonic V10's were almost here in the U.S. and I had the 65" sitting in my living room. Not sure why Engadgethd is slow to announce these things months and months after the end user already has it!
Wow, a nice Philips TV.
Us in North America get stuck with mediocre Funai crap with the Philips name slapped on, halfway crooked (I've seriously seen a 32" Philips TV with the name emprinted on the casing crooked.)
This might be a sweeping statement but i have never seen a Philips with a decent screen even the top of the range philips suffer from colour leeching. Stick with decent brands like Samsung which in my opinion are some of the best HDTV around.
Not a bad price, obviously too much still but it will be great when the prices come down.
OT...Is there a reason why I simply can NOT get an avatar to show up? I tried uploading a pic yesterday and this morning...Could take up to 5 mins eh? That's a long 5 mins...seriously, wtf?
Beautiful TV! Way too much money for and LED-backlit LCD though. I still love my 42PFL7422D, but I would like 120Hz. Too bad Philips hates America.
I'll take a £600 Sharp thank you.
What Hi-Fi recently reviewed a bunch of 32 inch LCDs and proclaimed the Philips the best, even better than the Sony.
As far as I'm aware, Philips TVs are no longer sold here in Australia.
What a shame.
:(
I know companies really love these terms:
Pro, Premium, Elite and so on .. To actually sell us something that we should be getting in the first place ..
But seriously .. a TV .. with the PRO tag ?
(Remembering that PRO stands for Professional)
What now ? you tellin me i need a degree to watch Survivor or Next topmodel ?
Whats PRO about a consumer TV ? The Price? yeah
Nobody has said anything about that girl yet? I'd smash that
news flash!! Sharp sucks!! Either Samsung or Sony are the best in LCD/LED dept. and Pioneer and Panasonic are the best of the best in any category!! Sharp? Why do you think their 65" goes for like 1,500 bucks and sat on store shelves forever!
