Atlona's HDAiR wireless USB-to-VGA / HDMI adapter gains audio, usefulness
Remember that HDAiR adapter we reviewed with exceptionally high hopes earlier this year? Yeah, it wasn't exactly the dream device we wanted, but it seems as if Atlona may have just remedied the primary gripe we had against it. The all-new HDAiR wireless USB-to-VGA / HDMI adapter is essentially the same one as before, but this time audio is involved. In response to widespread demand for the feature, the outfit has added the ability to output audio in both 3.5mm analog, as well as embedded on the HDMI output. This one's also compatible with Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7, and it's still using the tried-and-true UWB protocol to sling content. If you managed to hold off on the first guy, this one's available to order now for $219.
Atlona Technologies officially releases the new wireless USB to HDMI or VGA adapter, now with Audio.
Atlona Technologies officially releases the new wireless USB to HDMI or VGA adapter, the AT-HDAIR, now with Audio.
Atlona Technologies has been known for their innovative product lines as well as constantly paving the way for new and updated technology in the AV world. With the introduction of the HDAiR, a wireless USB to HDMI or VGA converter, earlier this year, Atlona has caused quite a stir among computer users looking to integrate their computers into their HD audio video systems. After its release, users from around the world responded to Atlona's customer survey asking what additional features could make the HDAiR even better. The overall consensus was to add audio support. Atlona has responded by releasing the all new HDAiR with the ability to output audio in both 3.5mm analog, as well as embedded on the HDMI output.
Compatible with both XP, Vista, and Windows 7, this one of a kind device will allow users to connect any USB enabled computer or laptop wirelessly, to any HDTV or projector via VGA or HDMI. This unit wirelessly transmits high resolution signal from a small USB adaptor connected to a computer, to a receiver unit placed next to the display, making it perfect for taking the traditionally personal computing experience and making it a communal experience.
Like the older model AT-HDAiR, this newer model with audio still uses chipsets developed by Wisair to transmit USB protocol over Ultra wide band (UWB) frequencies.
The new AT-HDAiR, is capable of extending any computer wirelessly from the display at lengths up to 30ft with HDTV resolutions up to 720p or PC and VESA resolutions at 1440x1050. Both HDMI and VGA output connections are active at the same time, therefore HDAiR receiver could be used to power up 2 displays at the same time with identical content. The latest addition to this wireless adapter is that is now able to output digital audio through the HDMI as well as a 3.5mm stereo jack. With the addition of audio to this new version, the HDAiR is perfect for viewing continuously popular streaming media from HULU or Youtube, as well as computer based leaning programs such as Rosetta Stone or Lynda online training.
With quick and easy installation, the all new HDAiR with Audio opens up a word of possibilities. For home, business, and educational users providing a cost effective and convenient solution to integrate PC's and laptops into HD audio video systems.
Atlona's all new AT-HDAiR with audio is officially available just in time for the holidays with an MSRP of $219.00.

rip off, $219... wtf?!!
Hope the price guarantees lead-free paint...
So does this fix the bad frame rates of 720p video?
Here is an easier and cheaper solution to get those movies on your lappy onto your TV. Have a kid and wait for it to be able to walk. Then train it to use the DVD player. Then burn what you want to watch to a DVD, give it to the kid, and watch him run off to start it. Wait a minute...that's not easier or cheaper. Oh well.
by the time i get around to doing that that, my TV better have telepathic plugins for my kid.
sweeet
Does this work over the longer distances of large rooms? Like say 50-100 ft?
And if not, anyone know any wireless streaming products that do?
Nevermind, the press release noted 30 ft.
Anyone know of any products that reach 50-100 ft?
look for anything with the Celeno chip in it for over 50 ft, it goes through walls, round corners, and way over 50 ft with great video quality. Also check out the axar provision stuff.
Hmm thanks! Any ideas on more affordable products with the celeno chip that do VGA input from a computer to a projector 100 feet away?
Does anyone know if this has HDCP support?
pretty sure if it does HDMI it has to do HDCP. But anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.
That price point MIGHT have been worth it if it played back in flawless 1080p. I guess we'll have to wait another 6 months for them to hammer out THAT problem.
Off topic, but is there such a thing as a USB to S-video or composite adapter? I can find ones that go the other way (for recording standard def TV), but I haven't seen anything for doing TV-out over USB.
so the point of this device is for say i if i have 20 computers in my room so i can just plug this thing into any of them and it'll output to my monitors that are hooked up to that bong looking thing?
@va jj
Actually, this is not such a bad idea. Imagine a meeting room with a projector, or a big screen, with a dozen (or twenty?) people with laptops presenting their stuff. Wouldn't this bee cool to just be passing the dongle instead of pulling the cable and shlepping the laptop to be near the projector / screen?
This isnt really a home theater or living/bedroom solution. In price and function its more geared to resolving meeting rooms and other large commercial areas. Such as a small biz meeting/presentation at a hotel that isnt properly equipped for video demo. Or a project we just finished at a church with large HD monitors mounted high on the wall up front...and the media room in the back. The first row is over 8 feet away..so there's no need for 1080p. And 1080p media content in both these types of setups is very rare even today. Additionally you can pick up one of these from an authorized reseller for 180.
I'd have had my credit card out if it worked with macs. I'd love to use my wireless keyboard and mouse to put my iMac up on my projector occasionally.
Is it just me or does it look as though the device giving me the finger?
I LOLd
but will it run Crysis ?
Is this only one way?
I wish I had a way to stream my PS3, DVR, and whatever else to my Laptop wireless.
That design looks like your every day modder carved up that case. Looks like something you'd expect to find in the chinese bargain bin
This will be a great addition to the tools one must have in order to get the work done. I will have to study it further to see how it will fit into my website. Or may be I should wait until I am good and ready to make some improvement on my site.

Don't have cables and watch TV channels and movies online, so this guy, if I understand correctly, will allow me to watch those on my TV set instead of watching on my 12" laptop. That's pretty cool. $219 is way too high, but found it online for only $159 - Google can save you money…:) - that's more reasonable.
I found it for $159 in markertek.com:

it looks like a cool gizmo for me. being able to cast my laptop screen over to the tv... cool stuff. i am sure waiting for the price to drop a bit to test one of those.
