Nintendo DSi LL set loose in Japan
Feels nice when a company keeps its promises, doesn't it? Nintendo said it'd have the newly bulked up DSi LL out in Japan for November 21, and shockingly enough that's exactly what's happened. Eager Japanese upgraders have today gotten their mitts on the 4.2-inch (both screens, of course) device, while similarly inclined European and American Nintendo lovers are once again left to envy from afar. Their helping of jumbo DSi, to be known as the XL, will be showing up some time in the first quarter of 2010, long after bragging rights and gift-giving holiday occasions have passed. We're not sure whether to consider it consolation or cruelty, but you'll find a gallery containing close-ups of the new machine at the read link.

Seeing as it's an isotope of the DSi, I'll call it a cruelty.
It is said to have a new piracy blocking method, anyone knows how it works?
it probably just blocks the current flashcards released, including their new, questionable legality, patches. They attempted to do with the DSi but failed thanks to their update abilities.
It lacks 'hook' compatibility?
It's just a matter of time before this gets hacked as well. I would bet that it won't take too long either, probably within a month.
I wonder if like the others, you can just import and change the language?
I think you can, but I believe that the DSi-ware purchases are all region-locked, so you'd be screwed on that front.
Does anyone else wonder what this thing looks like in person? I doubt that the hardware upconverts DS games to a higher-res, so is it the same resolution just with huge pixels?
Yup. It's like a WXGA 13.3" vs. a WXGA 15.4" screen.
Memories of Game Boy magnifiers seem to come to mind...
Oh God. The PIxels! (breaks down in tears)
Personally WXGA isn't bad for 15.4, though my 15.4 laptop has a WXGA+ display.
WXGA+ on a 15-16" laptop isn't bad per se... it's 95 dpi, which is a Microsoft standard. But you can really see the difference between that and a 1080p screen with more critical viewing applications - graphics design / photos editing, 1080p movies... Of course, interface elements get a little small, but the newer OSes are better with scaling.
Why are releases staggered depending on country? I never understood this, given the technological times we live in. What reason could their be to release a product months in advance in some regions, other then to just be a giant corporate dick playing favorites?
Maybe production capacity? Demand tends to be abnormally high right after a launch, so if they launched in all countries at once, they'd need a either a mammoth production capacity or huge stockpile of units. By staggering launches, they can have a more moderate overall production capacity, so that all the launch "peak" demands don't occur all at once.
DSi Jitterbug
The one thing that makes this all a bit annoyingly pointless is the fact that the buttons remain the same size!
People's fingers and thumbs are still the same size so why would the buttons change?
lol!
The goose is on the loose.
I was in Vegas this week and the company "Test America" has a location inside the Planet Hollywood Miracle Mile Mall. They asked me if I'd like to test a "New" Nintendo DSi. I thought it was gonna be a fake, But now i guess i should have done it.
I doubt they had it.
Android would make me rush out for this.
Android cannot fit into 16MB of RAM no matter how hard you try.
Even with X MB of swap memory via the SD card?
LMAO
I'd just like to say "fire the web development team you hired for this new site". Absolutely horrendous. Shockingly bad, one of the most hideous tech sites I've come across. Bring back the old simple, easy to read site.
It becomes slightly more bearable if you use:
http://www.engadget.com/#latest
Thanks for that. I wish we could disable permanently the stupid news montage icons at the top.
Cheers for that though I'll use that :)
Thank you, This almost makes engadget good again!
The fonts are horrific. Such a mess. I like the new site though. My major two criticisms are
1. Serif fonts in the body? Whose idea was that?
2. Even with my 22-inch monitor, I have to scroll down to get a full view of the content.
Yeah I kind of agree. For me it's just too cluttered. But I imagine I'll get over it. Facebook changes every 3 months now that everyone and their family is on, and I get used to that quickly.
normally i would down rank you for having nothing to do with the article. but u r just so right that i had to up rank you. they always have "how would u improve x-device?" posts. i would like to see a "what do you think of the new site?" post so i could get some stuff out. but i doubt they care anyway. theyre keeping it. for some reason they think what they have here is a news site, but it's just a blog. thats what people come here to read. a blog. the extra crap at the top of the pages are not only annoying, unnecessary, real estate-eaters, but also redundant since the articles are below in the timeline anyway. i prefer just scrolling down the timeline thankuverymuch.
and thanks for the anchor! i forgot about those.
Guys, just a note to say we're most definitely not ignoring what you have to say regarding the redesign. If you feel strongly about paticular issues, please do keep reminding us.
On the other hand, posts that call the new design horrendous and hideous are somewhat unhelpful. We've yet to find a de-uglify button on our web design software.
On the other other hand, if you have some specific problem and there's sufficient agreement that it is problem, such as with the comment font size being too small, we'll fix it pronto.
Maybe I was a tad unhelpful with the hideous , and I appreciate there's no de-uglify button but I'll tell you a couple of things that make the website uglier and perhaps you could sort them.
1) the bar at the top. . a headline poster/ advert (currently the "2009 Holiday Gift Guide"), It's just useless and takes up too much space. Before you even get to any interesting articles you have an advert (I appreciate that is nessessary , that's followde by the black bar of Engadget, that is followed by the banner "Holiday gift guide". . .that is followed by a bar with "News, Hub, Galleries" etc, then under this is a montage of images / articles and then under all that jargon there are the actual interesting articles.
I find the fonts alright and I don't mind having that column down the right hand side as it's somewhat useful. . .but the amount of horizontal bars on the website, followed by the montage of images is a little too much.
Don't get me wrong , I love this site and read it every day - but the new design is really quite bad.
I'll add that once you click into a story all is fine and it looks great. I wish the main page was like this. When you click into a story you get the ad at the top, followed by the engadget logo / bar / navigation. . .and then the story. Maybe you could add the option of the person logged in making the main page like this and allowing the option of cutting out the clutter at the top?

i hope nintendo goes broke i bought my dsi no more than 6 months ago and now they have this i want a bigger screen but im not wasting more money...
This is targeted at older people who have trouble seeing stuff clearly on smaller screens. You aren't missing anything by not buying this.
could have been the perfect multimedia device from nintendo...
Its so...BIG! haha
Thats what she said.
Yea, cause, ya know, what I was *really* looking for in a new DS was it to be made as long as the old PSP is. Yea. That was definitely it.
ugh nring back the old comment system engadget!!!
Why?
While I like the comments "down-ranked into oblivion" part of the new comment system, the having to click to read the replies is annoying. Sometimes the best comments are the replies. Also, could you think about bringing back the entirely blue "Highest ranked" comments? The little blue bar just isn't the same. One more thing, with the old comment system, when I up or down-ranked someone, I could just click + or - and keep reading down the page. Now everytime I do that it returns to the top of the page and I have to scroll down and find my place again. Sorry for my little rant but these few things would make commenting more enjoyable in my opinion.
There are so many things that don't work here. Just to name a few:
- Italics are overused, abused and distracting
- The obtrusive blue background of the "Reply" button; would have worked for one but is unbearably lurid when repeated ad infinitum
- Having to click to see replies is damn annoying, to say the least
- There is still no way to edit a post
- Some letters are even truncated at their bottom
And that's just for comments. All in all, the major problem with the site is that it has too many different fonts; whoever designed this hasn't got a clue about how to effectively use them. I've disabled many of the boxes and are close to a decent looking site - which ironically resembles the previous version a lot.
@orangecat
What browser are you using? It works fine in Firefox 3.5.5. I just upranked yours, and I stayed in the same place.
Those are some big screens right there.
Its quite bigger as looking at comparisons in the pictures. I wouldn't mind having one but no need to spend money again on a larger screen.
