AT&T's new DataConnect Pass plans serve up data a la carte
AT&T is following Verizon's lead today with the introduction of new prepaid broadband plans targeted directly at netbook and laptop users who find themselves out of WiFi range (and in desperate need of email) every once in a while. The so-called DataConnect Pass plans exactly mirror Verizon's pricing, which means you can get 75MB as a "day pass" for $15, 250MB as a weekly deal for $30, or a half gig per month for $50. Like Verizon, you're far better off getting the 5GB postpaid plan if you're a heavy user here -- but if you find yourself needing wireless once in a blue moon, this may very well be the way to go. The packages are available now; follow the break for the full press release. AT&T DATACONNECT PASSSM MAKES MOBILE DATA MORE FLEXIBLE, CONVENIENT ON NATION'S FASTEST 3G NETWORK

Self-provisioned and accessible from any Internet connection, DataConnect PassSM offers multiple packages of mobile data perfect for travelers, vacationers or others on-the-go and in need of customized data access. "We want our network to be open, accessible and useful in a way that accommodates unique customer needs. DataConnect PassSM is another way consumers can customize the AT&T experience."
Access On-The-Go.
Available with compatible AT&T-certified netbooks or laptop devices, the DataConnect PassSM is established using a previously un-activated SIM card, available at any AT&T retail location, credit or debit card and completed customer profile at www.att.com/buyasession. The site is accessible through any Internet connection; data service is available throughout AT&T's wireless network footprint. Customers simply insert their SIM card into the compatible laptop or netbook, connect to the Internet through an ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, launch www.att.com/buyasession, and follow the prompts.
First-time visitors will create a username and password, provide their SIM card and device serial number, complete the billing information and select their desired data plan. Once a session is purchased, data usage begins. As a helpful reminder, customers will also receive a text and email message once either 30 minutes or 20 percent of allotted data usage remains in their session. At that point, customers have the option to purchase more time or allow the session to expire.
For additional information, customers can visit www.att.com/buyasession. DataConnect PassSM is designed for AT&T network use only, providing service within the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.
AT&T DataConnect Pass – can only be used on AT&T's wireless network and cannot be used on another carrier's network, either domestic or international. Requires laptop or netbook with aircard/connect card capable of working on AT&T's wireless network; internet access to sign-up; and a new SIM card. AT&T DataConnect Pass supports data usage only, and does not support SMS, MMS, or voice calls. Actual speed and coverage may vary. Time begins expiring immediately upon purchase, whether or not you are using the service. Once your time expires or the allotted megabytes are used, whichever occurs first, your data access will cease. AT&T may send alerts via SMS or email to notify you of usage and/or time remaining. These are courtesy alerts. There is no guarantee you will receive such alerts.

Queue the "AT&T's network sucks" comments...
At&t network sucks. It only sounds sweeter every time you repeat it. ;)
Ditto
Who here would rather have AT&Ts 3G coverage over Verizons?
Anyone? Anyone?
Hey.. I get 1.5+ Mbps at my home in NJ with AT&T on iPhone with/without tethering... but for some reason, exact same location gets
Did your network connection get dropped halfway through your post?
Me. It works just fine. I've been using AT&T 3G for more than 2 years now while driving Caltrain. Works just fine. After recent upgrade I get over 1M all the way from San Jose to San Mateo. Who cares about Verizon? They try to hold on while CDMA is slowly replaced by LTE. For most IT people who travel a lot, CDMA is a dead horse. I don't want to buy an extra (and crippled) phone or device just to connect to an overpriced CDMA network.
Couldn't give a rat's a** about coverage. If you've got 3G you're running a good 1.5mbps on AT&T. Mine's running about 2.56mbps. If your connection sucks, then you're shi* out of luck.
I cover the entire US and Canada.... Verizon is useless to me.
I would...heck in my town(its in South Jersey) I got NO Verizon service when I switched to AT&T. I get 3G here on AT&T
(I'm not saying AT&T is universally better then Verizon, nor is its the other way around, but I hate this "One network sucks for all" crap people post here so much)
Do research, get what works best for you!
AT&T"s 3g works great for me, here is what I got on a recent trip:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/629314457.png
Or you could tether the unlimited data you're probably already paying for on your cell phone. just sayin :)
Yup. I just pull out my old but trusty RAZR and enjoy 1.2 mbps down and a solid 700K up when i'm in a bind! $35 Media Max for unlimited data and text messaging beats paying $60 for an laptop card plan any old day!
Enjoy it while you can. AT&T supposedly has something in the works that will allow them to catch people tethering without tethering plans, and auto upgrade them to a tethering package. I don't have any details at the moment, but that's what I'm hearing on the inside. >_
"I don't have any details at the moment...." Real convenient excuse there buddy. I've been hearing that type of threat for years..."Oooh they're gonna get you for breaking TOS." Yeah, I'd like to see AT&T actually try to enforce their own regulations. AT&T's data hounds are toothless dogs. 2 years and I'm logging over 7GB per month on my tethered laptop. I've yet to get a single threatening email or text message from them. Plus, there's no freakin' way they can prove I'm tethering. Got any details on that?
Yeah and my AT&T bill says that if I have a 'smartphone' without a data plan after sometime in September they reserve the right to add one to my account and charge me accordingly. I haven't seen that happen yet and AT&T officially told me that months ago. Sure beats a rumor from the inside for validity.
SECOND!!!! HHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Sorry about that, I meant fourth.
Is this for real? Here in Bulgaria, for $15 you can get 512MB prepaid for 31 days and for $20 for 93 day. And beliave me, we are far behind other EU coutries in prices.
You probably on have 20kb/s EDGE, while AT&T offers 3G or HSPA wich is way way higher.
EDGEs 20kbs are however way enough to use skype on my iphone =)
No, it's actually HSDPA and it's on 7.2Mb/s
Same in Poland.
In prepaid offer you can get 500mb packet valid for 30days for 13usd.
And its hspa network, i can easly get 5-6mbit dl and 1,5mbit ul with option gtm380 modem build in acer d250 netbook.
Ofc postpaid offers are better. 37gb - 50usd, 21gb 37usd. (orange)
@daily Yep it is for real. The US is waaaaaay back in terms of data any European country, most Asian countries and even half of Africa beat this offer easily. I mean in Uganda an 1 Gig / 30day pass costs USD 90 and mind you that's a country that is connected to the internets only via sattelite (==very expensive traffic).
or just using some tether hack for free
i would use the tethering too if that's possible!!!
i wish VZW and at&t stop fighting!
and MS and apple stop fighting too.
stop making stupid ads and make customers less suffer.
PLS care about the existing customer than to-bes.
Lemme ask because the language seems confusing and I'm not used to Verizon's method so I'm not sure what to base this off of.
So... let's say that I buy one of these pre-paid things for $15... Can I just hold onto it, for say, like 100 days, until I need it... without paying any subscription rates, etc?
I'm a web developer and last year, when the North East was hit by that newsworthy ice storm, 50% of Massachusetts was without electricity for a week... I had to post updates, etc., to our institution's website about being closed but couldn't get to campus for a couple of days (downed limbs, snow, etc). With this, could I buy this thing once and then keep it until I NEED to connect and then use it that time? Or do I need to pay an ongoing subscription rate along with it?
Nope.. after you buy it.. they expire in the set amount of days FROM the date of purchase. I work at Best Buy Mobile, and I honestly think the Virgin Mobile Prepaid card is WAAY better. They have a 1GB limit for $5o, uses Sprint's network, and is only $99 out the door. It's been around for a bit, but only sold at Best Buy Mobile.
$15 per day is steep. Since they allocate the bits anyway, why not extend the time to a week or something, that would be more reasonable and attractive. Oh wait, we're talking about US wireless carrier here... :P
I think it's funny they consider $15 a month for that a "deal". Come on.
With Vodafone you can get 1Gb 3G for £15, and that never expires.... You can top it up as much or as little as you want.
Yeah, but it's kind of a pain hopping across the pond every time I need bandwidth. ;-)
I'd rather just pay per bit.
In Austria I pay Euro 4 (about $6) for 1GB pay-as-you-go (bob.at). Doesn't expire for a year. Hard to believe the deals are so bad in the States.
$15 for ONE DAY of 75MB?
Holy crap, talk about highway robbery.
People who sign up for DataConnect or Laptop Connect are just fools. Who don't you just learn a thing or two by hacking your phone to enable tethering. You don't even have to be an expert. Just go online, find instructions, and tether your laptop on the cheapest unlimited data plan. I'm getting upwards of 2.56mbps on the $15 unlimited data feature. Educate yourselves! Morons!
Crap....I meant: "Why don't you just learn a thing or two......." Not "Who"
So... Everyone that wants to violate their terms of service and risk termination, or unauthorized use charges are morons?
Maybe you want to risk that... but I certainly dont.
I dont agree with the companies plans or terms.. I think if you have data service on your phone at all. it should come in all flavors: mobile, tether, unlimited, and it should all be a single data charge.
But its pretty stupid to just call everyone a moron who doesn't want to violate their TOS.
But I guess everyone is not as smart as you are.. you must be the CEO of some awesome company making 500,000$ a year as your company contributes amazing solutions to our society...
Tethering for some devices is just bad. On my iPhone, I first of all have to jailbreak it, then find a tethering app that works, then it is really shaky coverage even in places where it works great on my phone, then half the time it just plain doesnt work.
So you're willing to be the cow being led to the slaughterhouse by AT&T? You wouldn't do it because you ain't got the balls to fight the status quo. You said it yourself that you disagree with how carriers charge for data. Why wait for them to magically grow a conscience and change when you can do something about it NOW? COWARD!
Wow, what a glorious rip off. God bless our telecomm oligopoly.
15 dollars a day is expensive, but it should be unlimited.. i mean its 1 24 hour period... how much data could could possibly use?!?!?
Clear is going to kick the crap out of these idiot's wireless data.
I wish i lived in philly.
I cannot believe what a rip off these rates are. For a country with so much choice the telcos have you by the b@lls. In Australia just renting at the moment. So bought myself a Prepaid USB modem with Vodafone for $99 got modem and 1GB. Have just topped it up $150 has given me 12GB and 365 day expiry.
@(Unverified)
So you're willing to be the cow following the rest to the slaughterhouse? You like to get fu**ed in the a** by your carrier? You said it yourself that you don't agree with how carriers charge for data. Why wait for them to change when you can do it yourself now? Oh, but you wouldn't do it because you ain't got the balls to fight the status quo. Coward!
I'm wondering if I should get Verizon's (or AT&T, I guess) data thingy because I'm a computer programming student who has to commute 3 hours a day to get to work, and I'd rather just do my homework in those 3 hours than listen to music or do whatever. All I need to do is use a lot of Google for looking up syntax, usage and other code snippets. I'm wondering if I should get that weekly or monthly deal. Good or bad idea?
@Bash http://www.virginmobileusa.com/mobile-broadband
That looks like a good deal for you, though if that doesn't work there's always the plan from Verizon/AT&T.
I would kill for rogers to introduce
So just to be clear, you have to ALREADY HAVE AN INTERNET CONNECTION to use this? What the hell is the point of that? If you already have an internet connection why are you gonna buy another one? I get that people could buy before they go, but for most people that travel they will not knowthere isn't wifi there until AFTER they get there... Seems counter-intuitive to me
tragic, tragic pricing plans
Verizon & ATT are thieves
5gb, $50 is disgraceful like 10c a txt msg or 0.45c pm when you run outta mins.
arghhhh
Price prohibitive
wow. i thought malaysian have the most expensive rate when it comes to internet connection but apparently i am wrong.
here we got charged RM2 ($0.57 USD) for 100MB hourly pass, RM8 ($2.3 USD) for 500MB daily pass and RM20 ($5.7 USD) for 500MB weekly pass.
lucky me.
you know ... it's odd with all this daily pricing. i pay $2/day with verizon. I just call verizon, tell them i want to tether my phone (lg 8350 / dumb phone) for a day to use as a laptop modem. They say "OK, one day" ... and them i'm good to go immediately. Can't other people do that also?
I don't want to sound like a shill (although I am a customer) but Virgin Mobile has a similar prepaid broadband service. However, for $10 you get 100 MB versus AT&T's $15 for 75 MB. VM's top of the line choice is $60 for 1 GB versus AT&T's $50 for 500 MB.
VM uses Sprint's data network and I've not had any problems with it or my Sprint phone.
Yes, getting a contract and paying ~$50/mo for 5 GB is the more economical cost per MB, however you're stuck for two years whether you use it or not.
