Amazon promises update to better 'organize Kindle libraries'
If you've found yourself somewhat irked by the Kindle's lackluster organizing abilities, you clearly aren't alone. A post by The Kindle Team over on Facebook has made clear that Amazon is aware of the shortcoming, and it's currently toiling away on a "better way to organize your growing Kindle libraries." No details are given about the forthcoming solution, but the team does confess that it'll be released as an over-the-air update "in the first half of next year." Huzzah?

What they need to do is revamp this buddy. Nook is blowing folks away with this pre-order buzz. It's just SO consumer friendly. Even with Oprah's help the Kindle didn't create THIS much buzz. They must go BIG or go home this coming Spring & give us a SEXY design, UI improvements, & a lil splash of color SOMEWHERE (screen perhaps or back). I WANT the Kindle to continue its success & currently I'm holding out until I see some complete reviews on the Nook.
@Tuan X Not so sure about the Nook being so much more popular, but I *am* sure that the last thing the Kindle needs is a new model every handful of months. One really nice revamp might fine, but the thing keeping me from buying a Kindle is the fact that it seems sure to be replaced by something better in such a short time. That would be fine, if I could get the assurance that the old model would still be maintained with firmware updates and such to add the latest features in (a la the Zune, before Microsoft also decided to end that after releasing the Zune HD :\).
I know this can be said about practically any piece of technology, but it just seems worse with such a device as a book reader, and especially one that just costs so damn much.
agree
does nook support txt?
Is there an online book store that is DRM free? As much as I'm interested in the Kindle, your purchases cannot be used anywhere else. That's kinda frightening. The publishing companies seem to be in an even more ancient time compared to the music industry.
Of course, by online book store, I mean digital books. Obviously real books are DRM free. :D
@pika2000
An online bookstore that is DRM free? YES! www.gutenberg.org
But, all their books are public domain books and unless you like literary classics, you will not be happy.
But, if you do like literary classics, you will be thrilled.
@pika2000, If you like Sci Fi or Fantasy, check out Baen. They have DRM free ebooks for sale at very reasonable prices in a multitude of formats. They even have a very large free library of their back catalog.
Forget everything else. I'm not buying an e-book reader until there is a Netflix streaming/Zune Pass style digital library system in place. Pricing digital books based on the scarcity of their physical counterparts is a farce.
Putting books into folders or adding tags, yeah this sounds like a complicated bit of engineering. Kindle development team must be 3 guys sitting around a room taking turns reading Programming for Dummies.
Looking forward to the update. Love my Kindle, but hate the organizational structure. Would be nice to be able to edit tags within the Kindle itself too; I know the DRM excludes being able to mess with the actual metadata, but for organizing purposes, there could be a...uh...like...pseudo-metadata system or something. If that makes sense.
Honestly, this is my biggest complaint about my Kindle. with 300+ books on the device, it is very cumbersome to get to any specific title. when sorted by author its not even sub sorted by title. There are no folders and no way to create your own organizational structures. I look forward to seeing what is coming.
@jgrandits
I agree, there is no type of organization period. I have such a hard type finding books on my K1 that I just keep a few books on the SD card.
Maybe the update will help me find my copy of 1984... ;-)
I don't have that many books on my Kindle 2i YET and I already see the huge need or organizing. Why it hasn't been done YET seems kind of odd. but I do really like it otherwise.
