Market share is meaningless in a discussion about the merits of a product. There are very good products that don't sell well and there are lesser ones that do.

Most American blogs do not bother to research that S60 is a UI layer on top of Symbian. NOT the OS.

Symbian knows this and have had a road map in place since Nokia turned into an open source foundation last year.
You'll see a complete UI/UX change in Symbian^3 in early 2011.

In terms of features, functions and value for money the vast majority of people still continue to choose Symbian and Nokia phones. Is it THE BEST? Absolutely not but then again nothing is perfect.
Symbian has lost market share over the last year but its still more than the next 3 OS's combined! + look at the #'s closely. Nokia has sold more devices every quarter than the last year. They have lost market share because the market has actually grown and component shortages which they predicted mid-2008.

Also note that every quarter the ONLY manufacturer thats consistently grown market share over the last year is RIM/Blackberry who have continually climbed at 17% whilst Apple/Iphone has been stagnant at 10% (Android has only recently seen gains and as more devices come out it will surely strip away).

What do the numbers tell you? Its not about the flash for the global majority, its about the functions and despite global recessions Nokia/Blackberry have continued to sell more smartphones (and dumbphones for nokia) than ever before.

3.2" is not that bad. Btw, its price will definitely fall a lot before Christmas.
Just look at N900, if N900 is selling for USD 480 @ Amazon, i see a much cheaper unlocked price tag for this phone after few weeks.
And then, it will become the cheapest available smartphone in its own category with similar specs, just like Nokia 5800XM was and still is.
It may also be free with contracts,ofcz not here in US, but elsewhere.

c) Big screens sound cool but impractical for most people especially outside the US where people are used to using phones one handed.

d) Nokia can and should be performing better. Saying that we are ready to loose market share while we concentrate on our services and getting out back end together for the future is not good enough.

e) Nothing personal but,
" As a matter of fact I know I'm gonna resell it in 6 months and get something that satiates my need to have the best technology available at the time for my $$", that says more about your insecurities and deficiencies that you have to satisfy yourself by continually purchasing devices because you believe them to have "the best technology" rather than look at what they can do for you and the value they provide.

Its great to lust for the best and every human should have a right to demand better. Heck it is as tech enthusiasts that we are on Engadget!

Not here in the states where the only way Droid became the number 1 contender against the iPhone is by ads actually telling the ignorant masses what it did better, most people can't tell one thing from the other but they KNOW display size for their money and good marketing.
c.The iphone is 4.5" x 2.4" x 0.48" in size with a 3.5" display. Judging by it's popularity and the huge surge of sales in Europe as of late, this means that Theoretically any phone with at most a 4.4" display is acceptable in the hands, assuming they don't have a bezel taking up space needlessly. (which is why I reserved the .1")

e.I like living on the bleeding edge because I'm a power user and I actually *creatively* use every single feature my phones have in my every day life. I also find new apps to squeeze out even more functionality. I'm not overwhelmed by crazy specs and a laundry list of technology. I don't just do basic texting, email, syncing, browsing and talking. And when I see a few $400-600 phones I take the best I can get for the price, keep it till the warranty expires, then upgrade. I like my devices "Open", speedy, feature packed, stable, and aesthetically pleasing. The less proprietary crap the better. Only Nokia offers this, Android is in at a close second but Google doesn't make their own hardware, which concerns me. Or maybe I should be happy? the G1 looked like child's play and I think google designed it.

personally i think the "mainstream" people who have the preconceived notion that all capacitive screens are better than resistive are in for a huge disappointment. most s60.5 apps were designed with the 5800 and n97 in mind, so its going to be a bitch for you guys to click small buttons, text, etc. i can actually think of many apps that you possibly wont even be able to use on this phone because of that.

capacitive screens are less precise. dont believe me? download spiral defense for android and then think of how much easier it would be to play with a stylus or your nails.

I've played with the X6 and it's one of the nicest Symbian phones from Nokia ever (and I've reviewed most recent Nseries, Eseries and Xpressmusic devices):
- It's not meant to be a high-end phone like the N97 or N900, but a mid-end device like the 5800
- It's small (optimized for one-hand use) and it's a lot thinner in person
- It's the same screen size as the 5800 and N97 mini, but it's capacitive touch (first one from Nokia)
- It's the same camera as the N97, N97 mini and N900 (ie. best in class)
- Don't be fooled by the price; you can be sure it's going to reach $350 within weeks
- There's 32 GB built-in but no micro-SD card slot and there's no physical keyboard
- There's a bunch of UI and performance improvements over N97 firmware v2.0
