Get on it. I agree with the comment about the value of fresh water, but whatever: perhaps they can run it in reverse as well?
But then there's this: I just came back from being way out of town and Way Out of the Loop to find the lovely understated Engadget gone and this monstrosity of busy-ness, fussiness, and strange "script" errors in it's place. Pipelines and gigantic bags of water towed after tow boats have been are some of the suggested methods. According to Egil Gjessing, a Norwegian professor 350-400 km3 of fresh water runs into the sea from Norwegian rivers every year. If every person uses 150 liters a day (westen average) Norwegian fresh water could cover the need of every person in the world, in theory of course.

Also, more than 95% of Norwegian electricity comes from hydroelectric power where the potential energy is used to generate electricity. But, where you do not have any potential energy in the water this could be a great way to make use of "chemical" energy. It's a niche, but still a very environmentally friendly niche.

Noggie

Comments on

@Noggie Is this considered chemical energy, technically? It's still kinetic energy, isn't it? Sorry to nitpick, but I'm really keen on finding out more about this process.

In the end, I think fresh water source is not a problem. All you need is water of different density/salinity/etc. You could use sea water and coke for all anyone cares, and it will still do the trick.
