Xbox 360 Elegant Edition shows Microsoft how it's done
You know, we've pretty much all been enamored with the Zune HD's industrial design, but one unintended consequence for Microsoft was that it made its console look even more childish and toylike. It was inevitable, then, that a group of industrious Swedes would take up arms against this injustice and right the world with their Elegant Edition mod. Featuring three 120mm cooling fans, an aesthetic borrowed straight from the 1980s, and absolutely no shame about its bulk, this mod is cooler than the original in both the literal and colloquial sense. We'll accept no arguments to the converse. Better still, if you're willing to part with some cold hard cash, these fellas will build one for you too. We've got a few less glamorous shots of the redressed box after the break.

Hooraay! Now the Xbox 360 looks like a printer. Looks okay at max, but not elegant. :|
@Saad yeah, that's fugly. At the very least, that ugly green glowing X should have been aligned with the disc tray...
@Saad This show how much engadget writers know about design.
The 360 have a great design, the best design of all consoles IMHO.
This 360 its just ugly, bigger and with no sense of design. I know that the designer went ti a Bauhaus inspiration, but in ended in fail.
@SewerShark LOL at XBOX360 having great design... The thing sounds like a jet engine upon take off and it was known to RROD at times... and whats that under your table LOL its a dinosaur of a power supply!
@Saad ahaha like printer:PPPPPPPPPPPPP
@(Unverified) I think you've missed the point. The whole post is about design in the visual sense, it has nothing to do with the known reliability issues or the volume of the fans.
@lenarass C-C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER btw ps3 ftw
Totally Awesome!
@CJ100570
Really?
@Boh
i wouldnt go as far as totally awesome...but theres something about the look that is eye-catching and somewhat smooth looking. depending on how its set up with a tv and entertainment center, it could look really sweet.
Yeah that looks like a Volvo - in Scandinavia you should let the Danes design.
i'll buy one if they can cram a wii , xbox360 and a ps3 in there.
@va jj Then you should try it with the Lian Li one... ;o)
http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=261&cl_index=1&sc_index=35&ss_index=87
Ummm... this is a box.
It needs that much space to hold all the ugly.
@YpoCaramel To hell with how it looks, can it avoid the red rings?
@conscious Ironically, yeah it probably does stand a better chance wit those 3 120mm fans.
Not saying anything for sure of course, as I understand it the ring is caused by a heatsink coming away from the 'board. But maybe they can provide enough airflow to prevent that.
I would have slimmed it down a bit used more piano black and a chrome drive with a neon green glow.
@bigboy - I agree... those are good ideas.
Not bad, but I don't like the placement of the "X" button. It's completely unsymmetrical on both the x and y axes - off center and down too low, which makes it look like an afterthought.
They should've repositioned the "X" right in the center of the white section in front, just north of the DVD tray. That would've made it look proper.
In fact, they should get rid of the tray and replace it with a slot-loading mechanism if at all possible.
@DogStar
What they 'should' have done is put a bit more effort into the visual design of the mod.
If their intention was for function only, then rather than posting pictures it would be better to post:
temperature readings,
sound levels when running for e.g. GoW2
and possibly any differences in load times.
Still I'd be proud as hell to make something like this.
I've never performed a casemod and so probably doesn't appreciate the problems that arise from this kind of project.
"probably doesn't" –> "I probably don't"
oops.
@DogStar
Yeah I agree. They could have made it a lot more aesthetically pleasing if they pushed it to the side or something.
@DogStar
A slot loading drive would have looked a lot better. I agree.
The truth is, it's really just very plain and needs some style. I agree with a lot of the other assessments that it's just a box and boring.
There's a lot more they could do with it while making it look "elegant". As it stands, it's uninspiring.
I'm sorry to say this, but I don't think this design is better as the current MS version (which isn't my taste either, but IMHO it's way better as this swedish version)..
@SuperDre Yea, why do the damn Swedes have to ruin everything...
I thought it was the real microsoft thing since the pictures looked like the official one...
umm.. is that how would you call elegant ?
/facepalm.
@xValentine HEY HEY it prevents RROD, that should be reason enough for banned console users to switch to cases like these
they shouldve make it look more sexier not uglier!!! This is totally insane.... anyways it does look like a printer...
terrible design, the one MS has is light years ahead
@(Unverified)
Agreed and we can always rely on Engadget to provide subjective writing and reporting. It's good that you think it's all that Vladislav, but don't try to sell it to us, especially to those of us who think it does look like a printer or metal box.
For the record, I personally think the current Xbox in black looks good or at the very least, I'll take it over this "box" any day.
hmm on the press release pic it definitly looks nicer then on real..especially the side, top and back looks less stellar but maybe it just needs a white paint job
The irony is deep.
I think i just threw up in my mouth a little bit.
I see two problems with this thing, one it looks frakin huge... two it's ugly as hell.
@Amnesia87 I can only think that perhaps this one won't Red Ring! Ha.
Now it just needs some big knobs and to say Marantz on it.
@(Unverified)
At first I thought you were dissing vintage Marantz. I love those old receivers.
yeah, elegant isn't the word, points for effort though. Slim it down by a third but keep the black area the same size, vertically center the status indicator, paint it a high gloss white instead of the brushed finish, and it would be something to look at.
Why does a game console need to look serious?
@FitFan
It depends on where you want to keep it. If you have a room for games then it probably doesn't matter what it looks like, although an appealing design is always a plus. If you want to keep it in the living room then it probably ought to complement the design of you other AV kit.
Having been around 27 RROD'd beyond repair 360's (including 2 of my own), I find the "cool" statement a little hard to digest.
How about the Alien Space ship noise that is the cd-rom? Did they manage to add some "cool" to that as well??
@Munk Please disappear into the fog of down rank.
@Munk If you hate it soo much go buy a proper case like this http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=261&cl_index=1&sc_index=35&ss_index=87 Or go buy a ps3 and become a ps3fag with no friends

@Munk ps3 has just now started to get good games. the 360 has had them for a long time!.
I love the xbox hence me & my buds have gotten so many, but the reliability on those things is just atrocious. You would think they would have figured out the problem after 3+ years.....!
I sometimes feel like I'm the only person that thinks the Xbox 360 looks great. Most of the time people disagree with me, and I don't know, I feel like I'm not seeing "ugliness" of the Xbox 360.
@cjcamilla
It's not ugly, just bulky and unsophisticated. The PS3 was also bulky but at least it was shiny! The black 360 looks cool enough...
