Nissan's Scratch Shield paint coming to cellphones, invisibleSHIELD feels threatened
Remember Nissan's Scratch Shield paint technology? You know, that stuff we first heard about some four years back? According to a release straight out of Yokohama, the automaker has agreed to license that very tech to Japan's own NTT DoCoMo for "mobile phone application." In theory, at least, the flexible clearcoat will enable certain light scratches to actually heal themselves over time, and the paint itself is tougher to scratch to begin with. There's no specific mention of the who's and when's involved, but we're hoping to see this idea spread to other portable devices in the near future. After all -- who isn't sick of shelling out for some clear skin to protect each and every handheld they own?

I wish all cars came with this... Do Nissan's even come with it? lol
@LilCoop2 - it's on some Infiniti cars (like 2008 EX35 and I think some others).
@LilCoop2
My 350z had it.
@LilCoop2 No it doesn't, which is why it's a wonder why Nissan ever even bothered.
Many Inifinits and some other cars, like S class Mercedes, come with a ceramic/super hard clear coat, not a self-healing plastic type paint talked about in this article.
@(Unverified) Looks like I spoke too soon, I am hearing that all *current* Infinitis come with it. Interesting if true.
@LilCoop2 Nissans*. It's not possessive. Lrn2grammar kthnxbai
I wish Ironman came with this...
Perfect for when I put my smartphone through the wash for the 80th time.
Looks like a good idea, if not for the screen (which should be glass anyway), for the plastic casing. Also, the tag "resistent" is spelled wrong, which should be "resistant".
I can't wait until we see this on the iPod's with those chrome backsides. So we can all say Apple invented it.
they should implement this technology on condoms.
@Steve Ballmer
Best. Idea. Ever.
Anti-scratch and anti-fingerprint as well pls!!
Omg, this is actually useful. Crazy.
no skin ftw, "do it" naturally.
@Steve Ballmer
Do you just try to be as stupid and unfunny as possible? You seem to have a knack for it.
@(Unverified) as much as I'd hate to drop any of my electronics, i gotta agree with this. Although this isn't a snap on/silicone case i've found that they do more damage by storing loose sediments from pockets or wherever, than if it would have just let it "freeball" lol.
@SEPURB
Ugh, I know.
My iPod is covered with microscratches from being inside a silicone case. Honestly, it looks like it's been sandblasted.
"After all -- who isn't sick of shelling out for some clear skin to protect each and every handheld they own?"
I rarely buy protection for my devices - I expect them to be durable for at least 2 years or however long I use them, and scratches don't break functions.
Still, the technology itself sounds interesting.
@fiver
Word. My phone spends most of its time in my pocket, nad when making a call, my hand is wrapped around its back. The only part that I really worry about a scratch on is the screen.
@fiver
Exactly. If the item is not strong enough to last my normal (and relatively gentle) use, I really dont want it.
And as far as phones go (with the crazy $700 off contract prices) you just get the insurance on them anyways. Then the phone conveniently breaks when the terms of the contract are near.
I don't know if I like where this is going. If it doesn't get all scratched up, it makes it a lot harder to justify my new gadget purchases. How am I supposed to get my boss to sign off on getting me a new phone every year if they stay perfect looking for 3 years.
Did you ever see "The Man in the White Suit"? ObiWan did a pretty convincing job of letting me know that it's a bad idea to make products last forever.
What ever happened to that colour changing paint they were working on?
The highest price Nissan (Skyline GTR) doesn't even have it, even as an option?! Sup with that?
@(Unverified)
It's a Nissan GT-R, not a Skyline GTR or Skyline GT-R. The latter is no longer sold.
InvisibleSHIELD is done already. Their quality has been going down and people are noticing. It comes unglued within a couple months now. I got so tired of that happening, I just sent back all their products and told them to keep them.
@Yuusou
really? invisibleshield's quality is going south? and i was about to order from them!! thanks for the heads up!
@Yuusou You don't know what you're talking about, the quality of the invisibleSHIELD is as good or better than it's ever been. I've been using it for over 4 years and have it on every device in my house, even the harmony remote control and my iPhone which is constantly used and I've never had a problem with the product or the company's customer service.
@Yuusou
Yeah I have to disagree with, "invisible shield is done" I have had one on my 3gs since it came out and they protect it like nothing else. I work construction and my phone gets the piss beat out of it. I had to replace the shield after 2 months b/c the glue was wearing off on the corners but that was due to mis-installation. when I took the old one off the phone's outside was still in immaculate condition. Now that I've had practice putting them on they last much longer. It's also almost FREE to get a replacement ($3 shipping). You really cant beat that. This new product sounds interesting though.....
Sounds like it could be a good episode of Fringe. Where the technology jumps to people. Watch your orifices.
Why do my comments come up as unverified sometimes? Wtf?
ANyway, this would be extremely useful on my iPhone... :D CAN HAS PLZ? K THNKS
@(Unverified) I wondered the same thing the first day. Go back and read the post on the site overhaul.
Wouldn't it be cheaper just to buy the scratch/fill garbage they hock on late night TV? LOL
This is a god send for people who, like my sister, are clumsy and scratch there gadgets in less then a week.
The g37 has some kinda elastic paint that stretches over the body..
This stuff has tons of uses..
Who cares about the paint on mobile electronics? When they invent self-healing touchscreens... now that will be newsworthy.
this would've been useful on the old ipod videos... those thing were HORRIBLE with scratches
Anti-Scratch tech is nice, now if they can make anti-ding that would really be nice!
@Abyss The key is hold on to your stuff and don't throw you device in the same pocket with your ring of keys and coins.
And now you tell me, just after I bought zagg's invisible shield for my HTC HD2!
