O
iPhone3,1, where art thou? Last time we spotted that signature, it was buried in lines of code as part of a
beta OS 3.0 firmware build. Now according to data from analytics software inside iBART, the San Francisco-centric transportation app has been host to a new visitor with the aforementioned device identification number. As
MacRumors points out,
iPhone2,1 was originally spotted in October 2008 and later became the
iPhone 3GS about eight months later. Not that it's necessarily the case Apple will keep to the same schedule -- nor should it come as a surprise that the company's maybe-kinda-sorta looking into a successor to its prized
moneymaker -- but if you happen to be in the Bay Area and see someone quietly pulling out a sleek touchscreen, it might be in your best interest to make friends.
do you mean iPhone 3.1 and iPhone 2.1 (point) instead of iPhone 3,1 and 2,1 (comma)?
@msunardi
Nope, Apple rolls with the comma
@msunardi The post isn't talking about firmware versions, its talking about device names.
@msunardi
I guess you've never been to Italy and bought a 3,50€ cappucino... :( Life experiences!
@msunardi
...and to pre-empt any spelling sticklers, yes, I did misspell cappuccino.
@msunardi
The decimal system is different in the rest of the world. The united states is the only place that uses 1.3 to mean 1 and 3 Tenths. Everywhere else uses 1,3
@SomethingInMyFrontPocket
So does the United Kingdom, France and Germany do as well if I remember correctly, probably most of Europe now that I think of it.
@Kieran Not France or Germany.
@msunardi really, I'm asking because in the same paragraph it talks about "beta OS 3.0" instead of "3,0" so i was just wondering... that's a funny convention..
@SomethingInMyFrontPocket
I'm pretty sure using the decimal point is the majority. US, Canada, UK, most of Europe, Asia, etc. typically use the decimal point as... a... decimal point.
X,Y is Apple's naming system, and it goes by X=Processor and Y=Device That Uses The Processor. So If Product P = 1,1 and they had made another (P2) with the same processor, it would be 1,2. If the Had made one (P2) with a new processor, it would be 2,1.
It's simple really...
@Mike
Australia uses decimals too. Why doesn't anyone include Australia?
hmmm interesting
@Bud92 My money is on the itablet... it was leaked that the device is using the iphone os
I swear, if they ever made this concept, I'd be the first in line.

What?!? Apple might be testing a new device? Who would have thought..
Let's just hope whoever's running round with that puppy doesn't misplace it, we all know what happened last time...
@Jamesy Death.
Teletraphone me on my telegraphic device!
More non news. Smh. I know it's a Sunday and a slow news day but surely there was something better to report on than this non news item?!
@CJ100570 good thing it's a gadget blog and not a news organization.
I CALL iTABLET!
@TjK You call fail.
There were rumors that the 4G is LTE powered and in testing with Verizon. No mention of that here ?
@ankur I heard Steve Jobs was going to be hand delivering each one.
@awfulwaffle lol
@awfulwaffle what would you do if he actually hand-delivered one to you? (free)
@ankur As much as you guys think its going to verizon, I honestly don't think it will.
I heard they're making a new contract with AT&T again for at least another year.
@ankur Both Verizon and AT&T will be upgrading to LTE in 2010.
@Drybones5 I heard that Apple is going to skip the American market altogether with the next iPhone release, because some kid managed to stick a 3Gs down his throat and choked to death on it. Seeing there was no warning label on it telling kids not to do that, Apple got sued big time and agreed not to distribute the next generation of their death trap.
i'd be pissed seeing how i just bought a 3gs.
@ivoryhoughtongmailcom there is always "next years model" with apple. You can never get ahead of it.
@ivoryhoughtongmailcom
Dude just enjoy your phone, this thing won't come out 'till at least June 2010.
The interesting thing is that 1G "iPhone" was 1.1, 2G "iPhone 3G" was 1.2 because mainly it was the same as 1G iphone only different enclosure and added gps chip. But 3G "iPhone 3GS" version number was 2.1 because it was fully new device inside only the same enclosure.
So im intrigued what new things will be in there that version number is so altered.
@(Unverified) Above, (and a few hours later than your comment) another commenter posted this useful bit about the numbering convention Apple uses with their devices:
"X,Y is Apple's naming system, and it goes by X=Processor and Y=Device That Uses The Processor. So If Product P = 1,1 and they had made another (P2) with the same processor, it would be 1,2. If the Had made one (P2) with a new processor, it would be 2,1."
So yeah, I'm with you - what's cooking that designates that new "3"? Could we be seeing the results of the PA Semi acquisition coming to fruition?
what the ipod shuffle could of bin. shuffle by spinning those dials. if it hits certain numbers it'll pick a song to play or delete a song from it.
toy
What so special if it's a new iPhone model? Remember the guy committed suicide in China after leaking the 4th generation iPhone? I see no surprise that they are testing the 4th model.
I just hope that the next iPhone has a higher resolution screen with 852x480, 5 Mpixel Camera and flash, HD video and radio to compete with Droid, Zune HD, etc. Of course I also want innovative concept too.
@engadgetjp the iPhone runs a sophisticated set of Cocoa touch APIs built on a true programming language (Objective-C) and powered by a Mach/BSD UNIX kernel.
All this code development is extremely portable to and from the iPhone OS to Mac OS X desktop/server. Any desktop/server technology innovations and development is being quickly ported to the iPhone, such as Spotlight (real-time, universal indexed search), graphics/animation compositing engines (superior graphics performance), audio/video frameworks, etc.
http://developer.apple.com/technology/cocoa.html
Technologies first developed for the iPhone are also migrating to the desktop. Such as multi-touch trackpads in MacBooks, etc.
In contrast, Android was built to run web Java apps atop a Linux kernel. Its fledgling set of APIs and frameworks has a lot of catching up to do to the iPhone.
Oh so you can talk about this uninteresting crap but you can't talk about the very interesting android 2.1
@AndroidRokz
It's Engadget, what do you expect? 75% of all their articles are Apple or iPhone related.
@AndroidRokz Don't be a toolbox.
