ASUS shows off Congo-based Eee PC 1201T netbook
ASUS' Eee PC 1201HA just went on sale here in the States earlier today, but already it seems that the debatable father of netbooks is looking to one-up its own with the 1201T. Shown off recently at an event overseas, this 12.1-inch netbook gets powered by AMD's Congo platform. The 1.6GHz MV40 CPU was at the helm, followed along by 2GB of DDR2 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, 6-cell battery and an enclosure that looks pretty much like every other Eee PC announced within the past six months. Mum's the word on price and availability, but we're guessing both of those will clear themselves up in short order.
Update: The Eee PC 1201T doesn't have the ION chipset. Those responsible have been responsibly sacked.

great another laptop that looks like a macbook
@Uncontrol
you forgot to add at one tenth of the price.
a netbook cheaper than a macbook!? :O
@Uncontrol
asus is the manufacturer for macbooks and has won several design awards doing so... they also manufacture most of the ipods
http://news.softpedia.com/news/New-Intel-Mac-Laptops-Will-Be-ODM-By-Quanta-and-Asustek-15586.shtml
Asus manufactures Apple's laptops, but doesn't design them.
What happened to the trackpad in that photo o.0?
@DefPoet all "Seashell" Eee's have a borderless touchpad...if you look closely, there's an area with dimples - that's the touchsensitive area...
@NewL
Borderless trackpad I like (as long as there is some clear distinction of where the border isn't, like a ridge) as once crud gets inbetween the trackpad and the wristrest it is impossible to remove.
Asus dimples though, I hate with a passion.
Well the keyboard color scheme and layout is similar to a macbook pro. I am pretty sure that if Apple never existed then they would not have come up with that. Thats all I am saying.
@poematik14
so apple "designed" the black keyboard lay out?
or are you talking about the type of keys cause im pretty sure sony's viaos had those before apple use them
@DefPoet Black chiclet keys (yes sony made them first), spaced out slightly, with a silver chassis behind it, and a glossy black screen bezel, as well as a minimalist track pad. Smells like 2008 unibody macbooks to me. Asian companies love to rip off great design. Just look at the whole Chinese KIRF scene, and the flood of laptops after the unibody debut that look exactly like macs. Hell, even HP jumped on the bandwagon with the ENVY 13 and 15 series laptops which have an uncanny resemblance.
Honestly, think what you want but Apple did do ALOT of things first and they ARE being copied alot. Yes Sony made chiclets originally, and Apple did not invent everything, but they did do alot when it came to laptop design. Please give them credit instead of being a fanboy
@poematik14
i'll conceed that a sh!tton of companies are coping the look the the macbook pro. I wouldnt call myself a fanboy I use what i like :)
Apple stole it from Sony!
@poematik14
IBM PCjr is credited with the first chiclet keyboard... I had one.

@poematik14
Whoooppss - *slap in the face* ouch! That must have felt bad in finding out that your beloved Apple did not invent it huh? It must have been worse in finding out that they copied it from Sony after accusing Asus of doing it to Apple. Ahhh the irony :) You just made my day.
I'm still waiting on that touch screen model with Wacom digitizer capabilities.
At first I was a little confused as to why an AMD processor is getting paired up with an Intel Ion... but its cause their mobile Radeons are still on the 65nm process ~__~' AMD needs to get things going with their foundries.
@Luffy
surely you mean nvidia ion
http://www.nvidia.com/object/sff_ion.html
:)
@Luffy
oh and Global Foundries when AMD spun off is a totally independent company now AMD out sources all there fabrication
@DefPoet
Doh! That's what I meant. Oh well, I should brace for the onslaught of downranking.
@DefPoet
Oh I know they have multiple foundry companies they work with like TSMC.
@Luffy It's a Nvidia Ion, not Intel. Nvidia is the developer of Ion and Tegra for mobile devices.
Is an AMD Congo actually better than the N330 Dual Core Atom that the 1201N was slated to come with.
One thing is for sure, if it keeps that silver, aluminum-look enclosure, it will win many over with it's looks alone. What a great looking netbook!
@Conceyted
performance wise AMD's processor comes out on top, but it takes a hit in the battery life department because of it
It all depends on what it important to you
@DefPoet It is an easy decision for me. The UL30Vt still shines as the winner out of the 1201N, 1201T, and UL30Vt. Though it is slightly larger, the battery life trumps both and the processor and graphics performance does, as well.
I love those l-shaped enter keys :) Wish they had em in our country again.
Actually reading the source articles it does indeed have a Radeon 3200. I see no mention of it having an Intel Ion.
@Luffy
one configuration of it comes with the AMD congo platform witch includes a neo class processor and 3000 series gpu
the other has the intel/nivdia ion combo
@DefPoet
The one with the Ion is called the 1201N. They should clarify that.
Engadget you're confused. The Eee PC 1201T comes with AMD Congo and the ATI 3200 for discrete graphics duty.
The Eee PC 1201N comes with the Nvidia ION chipset.
@Tejstar
Can you tell me which is better? I'm about to pull the trigger on the 1201N when it's released.
Was going to buy a Mini 311, but you can't spec it to match the 1201N without overshooting by about 100 bucks. The HP has DDR3, but 1201N has dual core.
@Luke
Also, according to info from other sites, the 1201N will have HDMI output while 1201T won't. So if you need HDMI output, 1201N is the only choice.
@HellBunny
Damn, thanks HellBunny. HDMI is the top reason I'm looking at these units, or I would just live with an HP 110. Actually, I wish they would make the HP 311/ ASUS 1201N as small as the 110. I'm more interested in using it as an HTPC, and find the 110 perfectly usable for light word processing and Web.
if it really does have ati radeon 3200 then that would makes this computer about the same as the pacillion dv2... so then it should be cheaper right?
Ion is a platform, not a graphics unit.
@Nitesh you are wrong
@kojo87 I couldn't be more right, it is you who are wrong.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Ion
@Nitesh
Only you swallow nVidia's spinning. nVidia cut down an existing graphics chip (9400M) to work with the Atom CPU, then turned around and called it a "platform". Brilliant!
Meh, this is nothing special really.
The ATI 3200 that comes standard on the Congo platform is just as fast as a 9400M... oh wait it's Ion, forgot about the crafty rebranding.
i like it. i would really like to see more AMD options from ASUS.
i am not an apple fan boy but doesn't this resemble a macboook pro- chicklet keyboard glossy screen with black frame- aluminum body comeon Eee
Again why would you buy this? The 1201N is a dual core atom @ 1.6 GHz, and comes with the Nvidia Ion. So please tell me why (other then maybe $70 bucks off the price) would you buy this? The 1201N is $495 when it comes out this December.
@Kris because the processor in this computer is closer to an Intel CULV than an Atom.
Much, much more powerful.
Am I the only one who wants a 10" ion netbook? i mean, i have a 13" full laptop for when I need to edit videos, it seems a little silly to me to buy a 12" "small" laptop, 10" seems to me to be the best compromise for keyboard space and portability, not to mention the fact that a smaller netbook is lighter.
@jakjak9210 Look for the Mobii ION MiniPC. It's a 10.1" netbook with an Atom 230 1.6GHz and ION.
can Mac OS X be installed on this model without issues? Does anybody have an idea how much would it cost here in the States?
If the 1201N comes in at $499, I'm sure the 1201T wouldn't be too far off.
At what point will a new netbook release no longer be news. Unless it can do something that the other thousand netbooks out there can't, /ignore please!
Why do they have to place the right SHIFT key there????
It's quite awkward when typing quickly.
I found a good side by side compare of all 3 models http://newnetbookreviews.net/2009/asus-eee-pc-1201-available-now/ the 1201t is definitely the way to go
