I would be interested to see statistics of where PMPs are used the most. Anyone using their phone or PMP while driving, on a plane, sitting at a desk, or anything else near an outlet/USB port can simply plug it in and not have to worry about the battery drain.

As for the quality of media playback on a phone compared to a PMP, of course it's not as good. A device, much like a person, is going to better at a given task if it is focused solely on that task. A phone could be made to play back music as well as any PMP but it would cost more to build it. I think the iPhone is a perfect example of that, if you look at non-subsidized pricing. Its audio quality may not be as good as the best of the PMPs but it's at least as good as an iPod. That's good enough for most people.

CapnShiner

Comments on Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: PMPs

What about archos? while not technically a PMP the sure give these guys a run for their money!

Aaron

Comments on Engadget's Holiday Gift Guide: PMPs

@aarofloyd actually Archos does make dedicated PMPs. the most recent iteration is the Archos 3 with 8GB of internal memory. does a lot more than most 8GB players and currently runs only $91.70 on amazon

willow_twf
