Their lovely IXUS and other cameras may be good at picture taking, but the ergonomics and usability is nothing on (for example) the Pentax Optio and K series DSLRs. (Go try a Pentax K7 and you will fall in love at first fondle.) Canon's first touch screen compact digicam, (200 series) has a great feature set let down by confused blend of mechanical and touch controls. c) If Canon are to do this properly, then perhaps this patent is indicative that they are serious about the human factors this time. d) One of the major benefits of a touch screen is you can see the controls in the dark. We have a Panasonic TZ7 (ZS3 in the USA?). It is fast, powerful and takes good pics - but like most such cameras, trying to locate the correct button in the dark (such as Flash ON/OFF, exposure compensation, self timer etc) is hit and miss. But if you could do it on the touch screen, or the buttons were backlit, life would be far more peachy!

So, keep it touchy peachy Canon, after all, if anyone can, Canon can!

:)

Wonderkid

Comments on Canon patent application points to touchscreen DSLRs

This means that your LCD screen will be exposed to scratches and damage for the touchscreen to work. It also means having the screen turned on for longer, and that will reduce your battery life. Worst of all though, you need to take the camera *away* from the eyes to change a setting. Maybe in low end cameras this might work, but for those of us serious in photography will find this to be a gimmick.

spaz_1

Comments on Canon patent application points to touchscreen DSLRs

Isn't the touchscreen the thing people hated for many years on the sony handycam videocameras?
