FusionGarage plans media event to tell its side of the CrunchPad story
Michael Arrington may have declared the CrunchPad dead, but that's not stopping his former partners at FusionGarage, who've scheduled a video conference with CEO Chandra Rathakrishnan so he can "share his side of the story." Chandra will also be demonstrating the 12-inch capacitive web tablet -- which, somewhat amazingly, will be the first time we've ever seen proof that the elusive device actually even exists and functions. We're definitely curious to hear what Chandra has to say and how he rebuts Arrington's grandiose and melodramatic tale of woe, but let's be honest -- we're also at least mildly suspicious that this whole mess is just a calculated PR stunt. Stay tuned.

TBH, unless this thing sells for less than $400, it will begin with a C, and sound like Rap
@Skate It Dont Spray It
Arrington said they're trying to keep it $300ish
@Skate It Dont Spray It
Oh, look! It's vaporware as we all knew it would be. There's only one true tablet that will amaze the millions of consumers and that's the...
Why bother saying. We already know the answer.
@Average White Boy
Ah yes, the Google tablet, or Googlet.
@Emdii I want that Googlet now! Hopefully HTC doesn't screw Eric Schmidt out of the development.
I'd buy that bitch so hard.
can I get windows 7 on that?
@lennie22
first lets see if we can get our hands on that !
@lennie22
chrome OS plz & thx
My gut feeling of what's behind the scenes:
Mike Arrington threw a fit and became at odds with FusionGarage, then threatened to kill the project. Chandra, stranded by Mike's rage, had to move on, so he responded with an email, which Mike decided to misquote and use that as the scapegoat so he could victimize himself and get out of the whole mess he created himself, while still retains his credibility as the industry leader, even though he is actually the incompetent one the whole time.
@(Unverified) Credibility?
@(Unverified) And in other news, TechCrunch has changed its name to TechWaaaaaaah.
I don't really care about the fighting or the blame. I just want someone to end up releasing it sometime soon.
Watch this be a giant rickroll.
asian business strategies are often conducted through handshakes not legal promises.
does anyone actually know the time of the conferacne? i don't think i'm crazy, but i don't see the time. if I'm missing it, please tell me.
Journalism Fail. Who, What, Why, Where and When. Missed that last part.
Can't wait to hear his side of the story. This is interesting. Yeah a date and time of press conference would've been nice.
Arrington's definitely a tool box, but this feels kinda like the Chewbacca defense. "We didn't do anything wrong. Hey look at this shiny new toy, look how shiny it is. Don't you want one?"
@jon
That is in no way remotely similar to the "Chewbacca Defense"
@Fritz
Just wait 'til you hear the press conference.
Plus you're forgetting the closing line of the "Chewbacca Defense"
"Look at the monkey. Look at the silly monkey."
To be honest. most consumer wouldn't care who's selling it. Not like either side has a huge amount of fanboys.
It will be a shame if internal pissing kills this. It is the closest I've seen to what I want. Throw on a minimal Linux or Android OS, support h264, and you had my $. It'll probably sell at BigLots, with child learning programs, and I'll get it for $50, with no tech support, or apps. Sad
The "browser based" part of the whole equation is what turns me off. I'll wait for Google's implementation of a browser based OS/UI, since they obviously can pour infinite resources into something like that whereas these guys probably have like one guy to work on it if that.
CrunchPad was an interesting idea, but Mike Arrington sucks..
Anyone that will piss off Leo Laporte has got to be a giant douche.
Not sure how it's been "elusive". Every time they switched a color, or added a wire, they took a bunch of pictures and plastered the net with news of it.
Chandra as in Dr. Chandra? Funny how he works with computers, as so did the one in 2001: A space Odyssey :P
"Chandrasekar "Chandra" Rathakrishnan, founder and CEO of Fusion Garage, will speak to reporters and demonstrate "the device" both in a video call and in private briefings scheduled for later Monday at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco, said Megan Alpers of San Jose-based McGrath/Power Public Relations."
The REAL source of this article is the San Francisco Business Times (http://sanfrancisco.bizjournals.com/sanfrancisco/stories/2009/11/30/daily69.html)
Engadget quoted Slashgear, who quoted Gizmodo, who quoted the SFBT. A prime example of how all these sites are becoming less and less original, and are just constantly regurgitating what the other blog sites are saying. When you can't even take the time to look at where the -real- source of the story is, and give those people credit, you have become a leech.
Regarding everyone asking when this was going to take place. The rant about not sourcing the original source was just a bonus.
someone who can't get a tablet to the market that takes any taiwanese ODM less than 3 months to build (test, etc) shouldn't be in the hardware business. This is just a fine example of showing that Arrington has no clue about hardware and that he can generate some hype on the web.....
so who's fault is it?
It's the fault of all these fanboys and medias who are believing everything he is blogging about. This is a good lesson of guerilla marketing in the age of web 2.0
hilarious!
