Even though all of Apple's mobile devices share the same port? I mean that's kind of the point, isn't it? My guess that it has a plug which holds the ipod or iphone in place and the sponge just cradles it for extra support. But how would companies make money from you buying another three cables each time you buy any product? Or another dock?

Another point is that exclusive proprietary docks encourage brand loyalty. It was a factor when I replaced my Sony Ericsson with another... I already had a lot of nice accessories that use the fast dock SE uses. Apple users probably have ten times as much stuff... even cars, that dock specifically with their brand alone.
