If it was running Android, the Pandora would be hard to program (write everything in Java? no thanks) and would perform poorly (run everything in a Java VM? no thanks).

Notice how the HDMI output lags a significant fraction of a second behind the input and the screen on the ODROID. Isn't it supposed to have a faster processor?

First game development for android in java is a bitch, it's simply too slow. Developing native code is more complicated and cumbersome, makes it more difficult to cover a range of android devices. So how many developers will invest the extra time to cover a handheld with no significant user base when there's the droid and co?

The makers may be gambling on the fact that communities create the value or additional value in products. Take for example the iPhone, for some they want it because of the apps, which are created by people and companies alike. Another example would be games with mods (modifications, not moderators :D), Warcraft 3, Half-life, Quake, etc, games that are past their prime, but because of the new content created by communities there suddenly may be a reason to install and play that old thing.

The sad thing with PC games is that some are resorting to locking down the game so that only the original creator could add new content.

I assume you have actually developed a game for Android, like I did. As well as for multiple other platforms? Do you even own an Android device? Without that experience your statement regarding the performance of apps running on android might be a bit unqualified.

I've been waiting to play around with Android, but have been limited to the Emulator due to the fact there is no pay-as-you go Android phones (* yes, there are unlocked Android phones, but no android pay as you go from t-mobile*). Also, why did creative abandon the Zii Egg android interface, and replace it with Plaszma? They had a really cool concept going there, an android pmp.

Now only if they integrate a microphone port into this device, I could use skype. :)
