Android 2.1 moves down food chain, ROM now ported to G1 (update: hoax)
Future, meet your past. The fine lads at xda-developers forums have ported the Android 2.1 ROM -- you know, the updated OS from Nexus One that everyone's been talking about lately -- all the way to the original G1. Right now it's being dubbed version 0.9999 since it's still lacking A2SD, CompCache, and SWAP... and if you're feeling confused by the terminology, it might be best to not try this at home just yet. Creator Teh Dust has also removed a few things for the sake of making it more lightweight, including Car Home, Live Boot, and high resolution wallpapers / apps that don't jive with the G1 anyway. Willing, curious, and wanting to impress your Droid-carrying friends? File's hiding in plain sight, waiting for you.Update: Quoth the raven, 'twas a hoax and nothing more.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

I'll wait for Cyanogen to port some of this goodness to his roms..
@Wes Steele
I Imagine people are working on that atm. already some parts of 2.0 are in Cyanogen 4.2.8.1 anyways :)
@Wes Steele Yeah. I remember he said he was working on 2.0.
It's been awhile since he said that. I've been waiting on it.
@Wes Steele
Isn't this sort of stuff going to create a multitude of Frankendroids that will just screw up the whole Android platform? Wouldn't it be like merging Windows XP and Vista into some OS from hell? Without some sort of a gatekeeper, isn't Android is going to mutate into some beastly OS that hardly any standard apps will run on?
@Average White Boy Actually I am running 2.0.1 as we speak fully functioning and running great. Eugena373 AOSP 2.2 (2.0.1) Amazing how well it runs.
@Average White Boy
The gatekeeper is still Google as they are the only ones that the carriers and phone makers will go to for the OS.
Your Windows analogy is correct and there are a multitude of Frankendows out there that people build for various reason; like a Windows OS that boots and runs off a CD.
What the heck?! These guys work fast, how the hell did they even get a hold of it?
@Plazmic Flame SDK maybe?
"WARNING it seems this is a hoax don't flash this !!!!"
Well then.
Oh man, all of this Android goodness. I can't wait to finish my finals and get home from school so I can get my DROID already..
If you guys go to the last page of the thread that was posted on xda you will find out this is a hoax. its a hoax guys.
Is there information yet on what is different in 2.1? The only thing I've seen is the increased amount of homepages (not sure if this is part of 2.1, or just something on Nexus), a cool Expose like way to go through homepages, and a 3Desque App Tray.
Is that it? If so, why the hype? The new OS hasn't nothing really new that's huge and even the Snapdragon in the Nexus isn't such a big deal when you have the Droid with the A8.
this is a hoax.
Ha! When was the last time this was possible on a Symbian phone? Except for selling cheap candy-bar phones to developing nations, Nokia is pretty much doomed.

Way to be on topic!
And look above...
2.1 on moto droid will be nice.
they're right... its fake. lets accumulate our nerd rage and burn the "developer"
I think Engadget should read to page 3, it's a hoax. It's actually 1.0 framework...
HOAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
leave it to engadget to not read more into this and post it up as quickly as possible
Cute cat
I just realized that engadget is now expanding the comments section by default again. I don't know when this happened (probably because it is much more natural), but phew.
Ok. So when will this be officially announced (it feels like it was already)
Confirmed as a hoax
Check it out, I'm on Engadget!
Thanks everyone for joining in the fun and downgrading to Android 1.0!
@TehDust not nice.

Hey don't worry, everything can be switched back to normal on the phone.
Remember everyone that making backups before flashing is a good idea. ;)
So between this and the Nexus One frequency confusion, I have to ask.
Do you guys do any sort of fact checking, at all?
@jon
I think they are probably more interested in getting it up as fast as possible. Im sure they do fact check but since its mostly just a consolidation of stories from all around the WWW doing so before posting breaking news would likely result in a very uninteresting site.
Don't you guys see how uneven is the NEXUS ONE line on that screen?
@suland
Well the screen shot was not shopped. I changed the device name, sdk version, and release version in the roms build.prop file so that they showed up as a Nexus running 2.1 in the actual operating system.
I'm wondering why its taking so long for these updates to get to the older phones. I mean, the very vast majority of Android phones haven't even reached 2.0.
I understand the proprietary nature of mobile phones, but there needs to be a better more unified way. In a few years time, there are going to be literally dozens and dozens of Android phones on the market. We can't have a situation where every phone is all over the place on versions of the OS.
@Boudou To be honest, thats part of the build of linux and Android. Doesn't really matter. It only took most devs a matter of days to adjust their apps to the new resolutions for the Droid, and everything thus far is backwards compatible. One thing I love about android is portability. I have an unlocked G1 on ATT, if i move to a Sprint hero, then to a Verizon Droid, i still keep all my apps, and most of my configs. Doesn't really matter if I am running 1.5, 1.6, 2.0.1 or 2.1.
And the key flaw in the statement, is Android isn't proprietary, its opensource. yes there are some proprietary & optional bits, but the OS isnt. My G1 running 2.0.1 rather flawlessly is a perfect testimate to that.
@helfrez
I wasn't saying Android is proprietary I was saying the hardware on phones were.
We don't have a standard specification for Android . It isn't like a PC where you can install an Windows on pretty much x86 machine, Android runs on ARM, MIPS, Power Architecture, x86, etc. Then there are lots of proprietary hardware bits from the handset makers.
you engadget guys are dicks - must 50% of the shit on this 'shite' be BS????
how about waiting 10mins longer each time??? hmmm....
i have been running this for some days now this post is late
this ain't no damn hoax i have it on my g1 right now wtf does it mean its a hoax
amazes me to see that hoaxes benefiting apple,like the n64 few days ago, are never "updated" like this one... just checked and it was not updated.
what a bunch of apple fanboys.
As a G1 owner all I have to say is "KHAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
It almost been two weeks now since I received my new Motorola Droid, and I'm enjoying every bit of it. I was thinking of rooting my Droid, but I decided to wait and see. There are some concern when trying to install the latest Android OS will break the phone, and there might not be a recovery mode for it. It's a cat and mice game, but at least it exciting...
From the article, there was an update.....
"Update: Quoth the raven, 'twas a hoax and nothing more."
I know this is a hoax but I have a lot of the 2.0 and nexus one things on my phone including the boot screen and lock screen and apps like the car home and new setting widget (black and green) . So i guess it is not entirely a hoax.
