McDonald's WiFi will be free like obesity starting January

If you live in small-town America then you're already familiar with the hippest hangout around: McDonald's. Now everyone in the US, not just Zune owners, will be treated to free WiFi to go with their manufactured food purchases. Starting mid-January, some 11,000 Mickey Dee locations will partner with AT&T to scrub the $2.95 for 2-hours of WiFi fee according to David Grooms, CIO of McDonalds USA. The idea is to hook the nation's loitering youth into purchasing additional items in between Facebook updates chronicling late-night brawls with local rent-a-cops. Thank gawd there's a middle-aged man-clown out there who likes to babysit children.

Maccas in Australia has had free WiFi for a while now. I am not sure how many of the stores are free, but all of the ones i have been to come without any charge.

Poor americans that must pay to have Wi-Fi in Mc Donlads :) In France, Belgium and Spain is already FREE since a couple of years unless you eat or drink something.

However it's a good marketing stuff to do it, sometimes people that you didn't think use it :

@Yoda mm let me add my country into the fray! singapore has had free wifi for 3 years now , every macdonalds has free wifi, you can use it as long as you are close by(although you'll just have to make a free account to access the internet though)

All McDonalds in the UK have free WiFi. On a recent trip to Macedonia (population 2 million) I discovered that free WiFI is available there too. Poor America. Getting fleeced yet again.

@Yoda Kansas City has had theirs free at most locations for a while now. Actually quite a few places around town do. Starbucks was about the only place I remember that charged for it.

You know, all this free wifi stuff is fine for occasional surfing, but is it really safe? I mean they're unprotected, thus any random person can just sit there and collect tons of facebook/twitter/email login info (by default, facebook and twitter login are simply http protocol, not excrypted). Is it really worth it?
