LG eXpo unboxing and impressions

Physically, we're going to go out and a limb and say that this is as good-looking of a phone -- or darn near it, anyway -- as the Tilt2 and Touch Pro2, phones that we think set a benchmark for the way a modern landscape QWERTY WinMo slider should look and feel. We didn't have one of HTC's units handy for comparison, but the eXpo definitely feels like it's up to the task with solid construction, a thick-but-not-too-thick shell, and a metal battery cover; needless to say, it's a huge step up from the cheap, plastic-heavy Incite of old and its giant, mirrored bezel. One look tells you this phone means business -- it's understated while subtly giving off "hey, I'm a pricey smartphone" vibes. That's generally the sweet spot, we think.

The fingerprint scanner doubles as an optical trackpad, but it's not a very good one. Fortunately, 6.5 Professional doesn't really require any directional input (the Touch Pro2 doesn't have any d-pad whatsoever), but if you were hoping that this would be as good as the trackball or trackpad you used on your last BlackBerry, you're in for a disappointment. For a trackpad to be comfortable and effective, it's got to be smooth, fall on the large side, and have just a little doming to it -- and the eXpo's falls flat in every category. It's actually a bit concave -- that's bad -- and the chrome ring surrounding it acts as a ridge that gets in your way; not only does it not feel great to run your thumb over, but it has a tendency to interrupt your motion, too. Again, though, it's really not a big deal for usability -- LG obviously through this functionality in here as a bonus since it figured it'd have the fingerprint sensor on there anyway.

You might think that slipping a mighty 1GHz Snapdragon processor this package works wonders, but after using the eXpo for a while, we're not so sure. It's not that the Snapdragon isn't a brilliantly capable core, it's that it's simply not playing in the same league as a bone-stock WinMo 6.5 build like the eXpo uses -- it's like trying to race a Ferrari in a parking garage (don't anyone dare make a The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift reference here). In terms of everyday usability, we'd venture that an old-school 528MHz MSM7201A (like that found in the Tilt2) would work just as well -- and you'd get more battery life out of it to boot. Cores like OMAP3 and Snapdragon excel at powering flashy, modern, animation-intensive user interfaces, and considering that 6.5 is basically a tweaked version of a UI we saw early this decade, it doesn't need (nor can it really take advantage of) this kind of processing power effectively. Gaming capability alone might justify it, but goodness knows WinMo isn't anyone's mobile gaming platform of choice these days. Perhaps the one place where you'd think the Snapdragon would pay dividends -- browsing -- didn't seem to have much of an effect; we didn't have an MSM7200-based phone side by side to benchmark it, but the eXpo doesn't scroll or zoom in IE Mobile with the creamy smoothness you might expect (it's not bad, it's just not anything special). We can't believe we're saying it, but yeah: this might be the first, last, and only time we wish a Snapdragon phone had an MSM7200 series chipset instead. Revel in it, because you won't see us making that statement very often.

Wrap-up
Who is the eXpo for? Simple: if the Touch Pro2 / Tilt2 make you salivate and you're on AT&T, the eXpo definitely deserves your attention before you make a purchase decision. The forgettable Incite had left a bad taste, but LG's latest entry for AT&T totally changes course -- it's not just a far better device, it's a serious competitor in the business power-user market segment with quality construction, good looks, and virtually every feature (and then some) that a 2009-spec phone playing this field should have. If you spend 8 hours a day wearing headphones or you can't go more than a few minutes without Super Monkey Ball, look elsewhere -- but if you live your life one PowerPoint presentation at a time, give it a serious look. And just remember -- when that microprojector accessory finally hits retail, we'll all be insanely jealous of you anyway.

Bow Chicka Wow Wow
if its not a snapdragon android, who gives a sh*t
@Saja I don't give sh*t, I will actually give money for it.
Well, you might not give a shit, but then again, who gives a shit about you?
@Saja
@N900 or anybody else in the know...
Will somebody please tell me how I get a personal icon for my engadget posts please???
I've tried re-sizing to 64x64, made it a 4kb .jpeg and tried uploading several times with no luck!!
THANKS!
@OrsonX As crazy as this sounds, you have to use IE. Firefox might work for you, but it didn't for me. A 50x50 will work fine. Try IE or Firefox.
@OrsonX I used firefox to load my icon. Worked for me just fine. It doesn't work for Chrome, and I don't know about Safari.
@Processing I think you can use a up to a 70x70px icon. Mine is 70x68.
@N900 Did you get the N900? I remember you helped me with the N900 hype :D
@ the people talking about the icon: It works intermittently for me, but since the Site Makeover, I have never been able to see my avatar. :S
@TikiTeko Nope. I can't. I'm in a 2 year SIM contract on AT&T. Irony, eh?
Thanks guys,
I've been trying on and off for ages to get it to work.
Using Safari here, I'll try from a different browser....
Ta!
@OrsonX
Me too, thanks for the info people, this is my test to see if what you said about the different browsers worked, because safari just wouldn't have it.
@yulebellow
@#$%!!!!!!!!
@N900 nice!

t(-_-t)
yeah i guess nobody gives a sh*t about me because i don't like iphones. hahahahahaha. android ftw.
btw, you should probably stop using your iphone's vibration on your ass.
@Saja "because i don't like iphones. "
Slow down there...nobody gives a shit about you because you don't like iPhones. I don't even think that was implicated in this comment thread...
" you should probably stop using your iphone's vibration on your ass."
...huh?
@Saja
I don't think business users will "give a sh*t" about Android...
Also, that lanyard stylus is the exact same as supplied with my old LG Viewty:

@OrsonX added to the good comments, Despite the WM 6.5, this phone is real interesting to me. The specs are a geeks dream. And $199 for a high end phone with a Snapdragon? Not bad at all! Review: http://bit.ly/lg-expo-detailed-overview
It'd be nice if AT&T put out notices and such early enough that we'd know when new phones are coming out BEFORE we upgrade.
I just got a FUZE (for $349, nonetheless) in June. I can't upgrade until 2011. I had no idea that they'd have the Tilt2 4 months after I upgraded or the Pure 3 months after.
I'm stuck with an outdated brick of a phone that runs slow and sluggish (even on third party ROMs, no thank you very much XDA) while everyone runs around with their Droids and their WinMo 6.5 devices.
What's my consolation? I get nothing except the opportunity to waste hundreds over the 'new contract' price to have this phone in my hands - $250 more on top of $200 for the phone on contract. And I *still* would get the data plan shoved down my throat.
F*ck you very much, AT&T.
@dragonfli: You bought a Fuze in June? 2009 June?
You deserve to live with that brick. You fail at being attentive to new products, and decided to buy a device that is so damn old at a price that would indicate it is a flagship device, when it couldn't be farther from being, especially in June of 2009.
What the hell were you thinking?
@dragonfli I feel sorry for you, I returned the fuze after only a few days use, it was horrible, it was very heavy and the tiny screen is worthless to browse on, even with hacked roms it was so slow
@Hydra I dunno what hacked roms you guys are using, but the Energy ROM on mine is not what I'd call "slow". It's not as fast as I'd like either but it is NOTHING like the stock ROM. I think you guys still need to switch our your ROM - not all ROMs are created equal.
Honestly, every phone bogs down sometimes. Even the newest ones. With the Energy ROM, the Fuze doesn't really feel much slower than any other phone.
As for the timing, in June it still pretty much *was* the flagship non-iPhone on AT&T's network. I think I got mine in August, though mine's a refurb and I only paid $79 for it. That was considered a steal even at that time. They were still selling them for $299 on the AT&T web store.
I actually love my Fuze. The newest phones are iterative upgrades and none of them really make me jealous; I'm actually hoping that by the time my 18 month upgrade window is up that there will be another phone that I really need to have. It took me 3 years to upgrade my last phone; there was just nothing out that I felt like it was worth spending any money on.
@dragonfli
Not sure what the hell you were thinking. The phone had been out so long that only a person slow in the brain wouldn't just wait for the new wave of phones.
@dragonfli honestly man.. sell your fuze on craigslist.
that fuze is like the most pathetic excuse of a phone ive ever used. Ive gone through like 4 phones since and i still sometimes think back about just how BAD it was. Every smartphone i have ever used was better then the fuze.
@(Unverified) I love my Fuze too. I tried the 5nergy ROM as well but I found it had a light dimming issue. Now I'm rocking the TAEL Rom and it is AWESOME.
and for only $99 on Amazon with Free Activation Fee and $50 gift card.
I love the Qwerty Purist mark hehe
Lastly, the phone comes with a 3.5 mm adapter that allows you to also take calls while using your fave 3.5 headphones.
@TikiTeko here is the proof of the adapter and how cool it works:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02PEYkUElho
@TikiTeko: A 3 connector headphone jack would be infinitely better. At least that way you could charge while listening to music/streaming media.
These all-in-one jacks should have been killed off a long time ago. HTC has learned to eliminate them, hell, even mid-product cycle with the CDMA Touch Pro 2.
And micro-usb can be a pain in the ass to plug in. Its not as easy as mini-usb due to its small size and non-obvious orientation.
@TikiTeko I was actually pretty surprised on how well the CDMA TP2 fared in regards to connectivity. I can honestly said when I saw the 3.5 mm jack and the USB port as two separate entities, a tear of joy ran down my cheek. I just don't get it why the GSM version doesn't have it. This time is not even for business as AT&T is not even selling the usb headset at the stores :S.
I am in the group of those who think all this lack of 3.5 mm headset jacks on Smartphone is a pain in the buttocks and makes you wonder why they will leave such essential items out of the list.
:O I forgot about the Stylus: Maybe it's Maybelline. I hope people don't think I am about to put some mascara on (I am a guy lol)
The video describes it as a business phone, rather than a media phone. However, statistics published in InformationWeek (Dec 5) showed that business users are leaving Windows Mobile, which now has only 24% of enterprise sales, behind Blackberry and iPhone.
That means it's going to be pretty hard for a company like LG to attract business users to a WinMo device like this. Blackberry and iPhone have 3/4 of the business market to themselves. Windows Mobile handset makers can only pick up the crumbs left behind.
One other thing... that stylus pen looks like a lipstick. Maybe that's the lipstick for the pig, that people keep talking about in relation to Windows Mobile. Really, why should business users put up with a lipstick, sorry, stylus, when the rest of the world rejected the stylus in the 1990s, and have moved on to multi-touch interfaces?
@IT expert I like BBs, but there are 2 things keeping me away from them: (1) Lack of a full qwerty slider - something like the Touch Pro 2 and this Expo; (2) Lack of ability to use music subscription services such as Rhapsody and Napster on non-Verizon phones.
If, RIM gave me a Touch Pro 2ish BB, and I was able to sync my Music Libray in it, I will switch in a heart beat. There are some things RIM has done pretty well: Stability of OS, 3.5 mm jack, and JAVA. They also have great business tools and finally and giving us both 3G and WiFi on their devices. My other woe with RIM is the browser, which is finally going to be improved using webKit.
@IT expert: The fact that you attached iPhone to the 3/4 of the business market stat is insulting to BlackBerry's and enterprises everywhere.
I'm pretty sure BlackBerry has a majority of the 3 in that 3/4. Ill go out on the limb and claim that Windows Mobile crushes the iPhone's market share of enterprise phones.
@Ruben I totally support your point... the iPhone is such a great multi-tasking tool............................................................................. that business everywhere are paying ETFs to switch to it... I also think WinMo has bigger piece of enterprise than does Apple Mobile
@IT expert
I have yet to run into someone who works for a large company where the iPhone is even allowed. Maybe small businesses ...
Where I work (250K+ employees) our choices are BB or BB. That's it. No WinMo and certainly no iPhone.
@Ruben Yes, you are correct. The Blackberry has the lion's share of the business smartphone market, followed by iPhone and then WinMo.
This story lists the numbers for business users:
http://www.informationweek.com/news/mobility/business/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=222000504
uh, yeah, hi, the HTC Tilt2 has an MSM7225, not a Snapdragon. Slightly different....
@oldmanhorton Where do I say that the Tilt2 is using a Snapdragon?
@oldmanhorton He never said the Tilt2 has Snapdragon. Maybe what you are trying to say is that the choice is obvious to you as you will favor the Expo for having it? You lost us on the sarcasm.
The Expo seems to have a problem and that is that on landscape mode you will only get to choose from 8 applications that LG deems are what users actually use the Full Physical Qwerty for. That may be inconvinient if say, you want to use Opera instead of IE (IE is the default broswer on that landscape Menu - that will be a deal breaker; more than not having an explicit 3.5 mm jack ) This observation needs to be confirmed, I hope it is not the case, and I love Opera Mini 5 on my Tilt2 on landscape mode.
"...but does the basic package hold its own against the similarly-spec'd Tilt2?"
End of the first paragraph
@oldmanhorton Similar, not the same. Both are landscape QWERTY sliders with WVGA displays and WinMo 6.5.
@oldmanhorton Similar: closely resembling each other; having characteristics in common : strictly comparable.
We learn something new everyday.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/similar
In terms of generations I wouldn't say they were similarly specced at all.
Thats like saying a computer with an i7 is similarly specced to a computer with a core 2 duo just because they use the same case and monitor.
Yeah, what he said. Thats my point
Whoa, just saw the commercial on this phone and wondered why I haven't heard about this awesome LG projector phone, and then fired up Engadget and there it is. It'll probably be available soon, since they're already advertising it.
@zephir365 you can buy it online from many retailers including AT&T. Sadly, it is not in display at any store.
Why does everyone hate Windows Mobile so much? Personally I believe it's the only OS currently worth using. Any other OS feels like a gimmicky toy. Sure the Iphone or Android have 100,000 Apps, to bad 99,000 of them are crap like "games" (quoted to emphasize the sarcasm) that simulate a pair of die when you shake it, or some other useless crap like that.
Not a multimedia phone? Really? I have 370 movies on my PC, so I could buy one of the popular "multimedia" phones and spend 6 months converting them to MP4 or I can get Win Mobile and...wait.... I can watch or listen to media that ISN'T in some proprietary DRM-protected format...but I'm sure your all patient enough to wait or it to come to your app store...
...Which brings me to another point; If I bought a PC and the manufacturer told me I could only download applications from their website or play media in their format, I would tell them to go to hell and then I would buy from a new company, yet this practice is not only accepted but ENCOURAGED in cell phones... Why? I can search the web for thousands (and for all I know millions) of apps for win mobile to do anything I need, including stuff google or apple seem to have decided you dont really need....for free. But I guess if you were smart enough to find and install your own cabs you'd already be using Windows Mobile...
I could go on but I suppose thats why I have a pocket *PC* and your a bunch of 12 year olds with a bunch of toys that don't really do anything.
@Caliber68 I actually also love WinMo. It may not be the sexiest, the prettiest, the most popular girl in high school but she is flexible, intelligent and plays well with my other bigger more important girl - my PC.
Like someone said, whatever you need, there is a .cab for that.
