I am not certain if Apple will be making a GSM/CDMA capable device which supports both networks, but I am pretty sure they are not leaving AT&T. Apple is supposedly investing millions of dollars with AT&T to get a better integrated point-of-sale system. If you have ever purchased an iPhone from an Apple store, you are well aware that their capabilites are extremely limited as to AT&T systems; there is a huge lack of coordination betweens the two companies on a point-of-sale aspect (i.e. Apple cannot perform upgrade swaps-- they can only upgrade the eligible line and then send you to AT&T to tag it to another).

Also, a contract agreement does not happen overnight. With the exclusivity rights ending very soon, contract negotiations would have been happening for months already. Notice the timing in all of Verizon's advertisements directed towards the iPhone and AT&T. Not once has VZW attacked the iPhone or AT&T directly as to the extent they currently are. Can this be a sign that they already know that Apple is sticking with AT&T? Why would Steve Jobs be willing to partner with a company who is making such a mockery of "his baby"? This could be right - enabling people to run a few apps at once would be a big improvement. In line with previous upgrades (MMS, video, etc) it's something that competitors already do, but can be held up as innovation that flew from the gates of Cupertino on silvery wings.

no I think the biggie will be something else. a phone device of sorts. well a device with built in (but optional) cell data (and both GSM and CDMA to boot).

The announcement will go something like this. "Today we are announcing THREE new revolutionary devices. First we have a new ipod capable of viewing both standard and 720p video, including our new Movie Extras content and iTunes LP, a new 10 inch gaming and applications device that can use all your previously bought iphone apps, a full color e-reader for books, digital magazines and more and lastly a touch screen netbook with both wifi and optional cellular data compatible with all the major carriers.
A High Def ipod, a gaming device, an e-reader and a netbook. An ipod, a game player, an e-reader and a netbook . . .
And they are all one device."
he'll go on of course about how there's a built in isight camera so you can video chat on the road. how the screen uses all the familiar multi-touch from the phone. how it uses the same new battery tech so you can get up to 10 hours of use, etc.

Engadget is filled with PC Gamers and Mac users. Those are the two extremes and never the twain shall meet.

Along comes the iPod...with iTunes for WIndows... Now tons and tons of ... PC users are buying their first.. Apple product... and its a confusing time... They still play Video Games, however, sadly. So the PC remains.

As they get more used to owning an iPod, they start looking for flaws. After all, they could never live with themselves if they were, Apple customers. Remember, they derided Apple all the way through high school for *sigh not having any Games. Wouldn't wanna look like a hyprocrite now, would we?

Anyway, now we're almost out of college, and Apple unleashes the iPhone. And its so damn cool, even the harshest, most lunatic PC fanboy (eg. Paul Thurrott) is drooling over this thing. They sell like hotcakes, and now everyone, all over the world, is a 'Apple customer'... Again, the only way to ... respect oneself is to be the Apple hater. It's ok.. you can still have a cool phone, and not be a hypocrite, because there are tons of companies like HTC/Samsung that are trying to copy the iPhone like crazy.

Oh, oh, and how's this for cruel irony: no other phone has anywhere near the number of Applications as the iPhone, and....ahem...the games on the iPhone are actually pretty damn cool.

How is HTC copying the iPhone? Can you name me ONE device that looks like the iPhone? Can you name me one iteration of Touch Flo that looks or behaves like the iPhone? Please get a clue about what you are talking about. Current HTC phones look nicer and kill the iPhone when it comes to user interfaces.

I have an iPod Touch. Let me tell you, if you think that the games on the Touch or iPhone are "pretty damn cool" you obviously are not a gamer. I'd take a Gameboy over my iPod touch for gaming. The Touch and iPhone are total weak-sauce compared to the current generation of PSP and DSi.
