HOWEVER, since six months ago all you guys were panting after Ion-based netbooks, and claiming you'd buy them if somebody would just release one, and now they're actually available and you're asking for something else, if I were a laptop maker I wouldn't completely trust you.

Understand--the Ion-based CULV laptop you want will (a) have worse battery life than the one without the Ion, and (b) will be more expensive than the one without the Ion. If you aren't prepared for this little dose of reality, then stop commenting on Engadget please. CULV netbooks have fabulous battery life so you can lose a little without killing yourself, and they CAN be quite inexpensive ($399 for the Acer AS1410 say), so I think you can handle the extra cost (say $20x2.5=$50?).

That said, I personally like the CULV laptops that are out already, in fact I just bought one, and wouldn't want one with an Ion that made the battery life worse and made it more expensive. Its a 2nd laptop, and I can barely justify it as it is. And I don't play ANY games to speak of, so I could care less about Ion. Sure maybe there will still be an enthusiast market, or maybe they'll survive off chips in consoles or something, but for the vast majority of people the GPU inside the CPU chip will be adequate.

And yes you'd think AMD still has a shot here, but where are they? They should be making money off the CULV segment at the very least.and I don't think they're competitive since their battery life isn't as good. They need to get their act together. Fewer and fewer people are going to need high end GPUs or high end CPUs and they need to be competitive in this space...

Fanfoot

Comments on

Atom N450 + ION2 = mini gaming notebook

neflow

Comments on

I'm still holding out for CULV + Ion in an 11" 1366x768 package.

dagamer43

Comments on

Best news I had today, now make it happen! :D

Inu

Comments on

On an unrelated note, I was in a computer store and saw a display trying to define a netbook, and a notebook. Without the atom netbooks wouldn't exist. If netbooks didn't exist we would be posting on this article. You'd not have that opinion. I wouldn't defend Nvidia's right to bash Intel, and the problem of underpowered tiny laptops wouldn't have occurred. However, it did occur didn't it? Intel created a processor for underpowered netbooks. Nvidia took that processor and sprinkled awesome on it. Intel called overkill, and nvidia said "STFU this is the future of handheld gaming".

William Wolf

Comments on

ION 1 has only been out for two months now; I'm not buying into Ion 2 being available "Q1 2010", that's what they said about Ion 1.

As much as I'd like Ion 2, I'm picking up the 1201N.

Justin

Comments on

@Shidell Good call. The only real advantage to Pinetrail is battery life. It is hardly any faster. Since you want an Ion-based system, you can't possibly care that much about battery life, or you wouldn't want Ion in the first place.

Also, Ion 2 will likely have to hook up via PCIe. I don't even know if the GPU inside Pineview can be disabled (e.g. stop using power). So Pineview's GPU performance will likely be WORSE than Diamondville, and on top of that the battery life might not be any better.
