This is not WM’s fault I blame Samsung more then any one. The Samsung widget screens that come out of the box are blank and useless. If you spend a couple of hours un configuring the phone you will be rewarded with a phone that has built in low power xvid playback, swype (which I will never get another phone with out) and two web browsers that both can handle any web site you throw at them including flash. I also appreciate not having to root my own phone. It is sad when Microsoft sells the only smart phones that are not locked.
PS did anyone else know Verizon has their own version of shazam ??? Sadly, he is just too prideful to admit, that WinMo 6.5 with Samsung was another broken promise. Key word "broken". he has done the fixes, and still complains how laggy it is. All I can do is pat him on the shoulder, when his gps fails to work, and my works 99.9% of the time. Or that 800 MHz processor takes what seems like a decade to load a program or web page. Don't hate on the droid, it's all preference really. I rather have a phone I can root by option, still run optimally and have a bit of freedom. Than have a phone right out the box I got to make a million changes to, just for it to function smoothly. The CPU it uses (Omap3430) is capable of HDMI output and 720p video encoding and decoding. All of those features were purposely disabled by motorola...they crippled it basically. But the worst thing about android is the software crippling...so many limitations, it's unbelievable. And nothing about WM is broken, you're missing the point...it's about preference really.
Oh, and if you want to see what samsung did with the same CPU the droid uses, check out the OmniaHD -- 720p output via DLNA, captures 720p video, AMOLED screen, 8gb internal storage (Droid has like NO internal storage), and out of the box has Xvid, x264, h264, and divx hardware video acceleration (same with the omnia 2).

Download an xvid from the internet and compare playing it back on the droid and on the omnia 2 (with whatever rom) -- OH WAIT, droid can't play xvid, you'd have to transcode the media to mp4 container and h264 codec. Only videos droid will play is h.264 codec with .mp4 container, not any of the 1000 of xvids and mkvs I have, all because google doesn't want people to have access to the hardware decoder. Droid definitely does NOT when it comes to media. The problem is not the OS. MS has made an extremely versatile and configurable OS. The problem is that the handset manufacturers do not take the time to optimize all the many settings available to them. Instead, they load it up with half-baked software and interfaces, which the carriers then make worse with their crapware and payware.

Case in point - my LG Incite. Running a custom WM6.5.1 ROM (courtesy of Dark Wolf), I've got about 15-20 minor registry custom settings that cure most of the evils associated with WinMo. Every one of these should have been preset by LG. The only remaining problem is the LG accelerometer driver, which simply refuses to operate for extended periods without locking up the display. Again, NOT a Microsoft problem.

As Android becomes more pervasive and more customized, we're starting to see more grumblings about it's performance issues. Even Apple (which maintains absolute dominion over the hardware, OS, and software) has had major problems arise within their envirosphere.

Much of the grumbling aimed at WinMo phones is justified, but let's aim the complaints where they belong - at the phone manufacturers who don't optimize the OS to the hardware.

JimScar

Comments on

@jimscar

Do you have android running phone? I, and others have flamed them so hard on their support forums, but they don't seem to care. SlingMedia has completely their mobile software the past year and a half; even the WM version and it's obsolete interface. On large screen \ resolution WM phones like the TG01 and the HD2 it's almost impossible to use the tiny buttons on the control panel at the bottom of the screen.
The only reason this old ass WM version still runs on newer 6.1 and 6.5 handsets is because Windows Mobile was designed from the ground up to have programs be compatible across handset vendors and different versions...but as for other platforms like Symbian, you are S.O.L. if you want a slingplayer support for any symbian touch-screen phone released in the past year and a half...and for Android and WebOS -- sorry, no support whatsoever. Even on the shitty ass iPhone, the slingplayer app only works over wifi (what a joke).
