ROM = This is a copy of the 'operating system' of the phone in question, so when installing a rom you are giving it a new software to operate on.
Radio = about anything in the device that sends/receives data ina wireless manner. ie: the wifi, Bluetooth, fm transmitters, and the cell connection

Some people find the Cliq hardware much nicer than G1 (more RAM!).

Also Motorola hasn't said anything about upgrading Cliq to 2.1, but the HAVE said that they are releasing 2.1 Motoblur devices. Trust me - the ROM guys WILL get Motoblur working on 2.1 if that is the case.

Droid has another hole elsewhere (so users which got the update preinstalled only will need it), while quest for Milestone is yet to be done (Droid hack doesn't work there).
