PS3 dipped in gold appeals to our 'elitist doofus' sensibilities
Here's the thing. Merely dipping something in 22 carat gold does not necessarily mean we'll like it better... but it's a semi-decent start. Now, we know a PS3 literally covered in gold and diamonds isn't exactly "news," nor is it anything we haven't seen before with other consoles. It is, however, a stark reminder that being super rich often leads to gaudy, tasteless, nearly criminal displays of ridiculousness. Hit the source link if you want to order one from purveyor Stuart Hughes for a mere £199,995 (that's about $320,000).

If Mr. Hughes has nothing better to do with all of that poundage...

Gold PS3 or a new home? hmmm decisions decisions.....
Little Stuart has more gold than brains, quit dipping everything in gold and thinking you can sell it for massive profit. Next article on engadget will be a freshly minted turd in gold from Stuart Hughes.
@fatslug If you can afford that, then you already have a mansion.
If i was super rich, I would just spent less money for an awesome looking colorware PS3. At least I'm not stuck with only gold and by the looks of that picture, a PS3 that is only half painted.
Not enough gold on it. What the hell is up with the bottom portion still being black? Not buying it!
So there's a golden psp (like in south park), now a golden ps3. I guess who ever owns it, rules them all
@albinomexi
Just like Keanu Reeves
@albinomexi and own's em too, actually just the xbox 360 gold version and we will already have a set: a gold ps3, gold wii: http://bit.ly/wii-now-on-gold-most-expensive
Not to mention that there's a gold iphone too, for Richie Rich geeks. lol
I anticipate a response from Bill Gates any second now...
@jol
He'd say buy an XBOX.
BLING BLING!
Coming soon to MTV Cribs
All this dipping things into gold makes me wonder what he hasn't dipped. Goldmember anyone?
There's stupid, and then there's this, which makes stupid = not stupid in comparison.
Meh, this is for the peasant class of the ultra rich. It needs to be more ridiculous. Here's what I'm thinking:
Take a PS3 and dip it into molten gold.
Take another PS3, fly it to the Bermuda Triangle and throw it overboard, but also throw out $640,000 Euros.
Take another PS3 and only dip the inside of the casing in gold, and also fill it with diamonds, covered in goat blood. Sell this PS3 to the buyer for his/her newborn.
@skadebo
goat blood?!? SOLD!
Isn't the point of being rich and buying really nice things to not pay way too much for just a half-assed version of something relatively inexpensive just half dipped in gold?
This is like your average joe buying a bic pen with a Gold cap for $200.
LMAO, and the Wii is still more expensive? xD
@MegaJapan
Well its clad in 2500 grams of 22ct gold, if I did the conversion right that's 5.5 pounds of gold. So that explains the price difference, but not the stupidity.
Nouveau riche, they'll buy anything that will flaunt the new found wealth.
From their website:
"The layout had to be genuine, never to project an illusion most importantly in the strict non use of computer generated images which unfortunately appear quite regularly on the internet these days."
So that open flash intro was not computer generated, it was programmed on gold plated punch cards. Stupid!
it needs spinners a flip up LCD and a stash of grape flavored mentholated #2 pencils to be complete.
I'll take one if Engadget sends me a demo unit to 'test'.
You mean your "upper class twit" tendencies.
so this means it doesn't have a warranty anymore, since it has been opened
when the optical head got 'locked up', the guy needs to send this unit for repair //grin
what a wast of gold.....
Stupid is as stupid does...
It's not even a PS3 Slim!!
please please please Engadget.....find the idiot who buys this and setup an interview. I want to know what goes through someone's mind when they buy something like this.
For THAT price, it better be solid gold. With diamonds inside.
Ewwww! Not for me. Crazy price!
Gold is too gaudy, I prefer white gold with onyx or brushed aluminum. now that I'd pay extra for...
looks like the economy doesnt affect these people.
It's probably a game developers tax cheat write off
Maybe the gold will magically bring back backwards compatibility. A guy can dream...
I've seen pics of a golden PS3 slim like a month ago...
reminds me of this http://bash.org/?433064
