The crack to root your phone is pretty easy and only needs to be done once. I will warn you though, flashing roms to your phone can become an addiction. Make sure to also install RA's recovery environment after you get it rooted. It will allow you to do everything from backup your current ROM too properly formatting your SD Card. If you do not have a class 6 SD card I would suggest getting one. You can get by with a lower class card, but the experience is better with a higher class.

Start with this thread to root your phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
Instead of installing the roms he has listed as the last step in the tutorial above just use one of the newer ones like Cyanogen found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567610
After this go ahead and install RA's recovery environment as it is far more useful then the standard one. I don't have data. all you have to do is download the update on your pc, put it on an sd card, hit home + power to go into recovery mode, and install. although, in all honesty, the music app in android sucks horribly. there aren't many good replacements either imo. tunewiki (or w/e it's called) was slow for me, mixzing runs in the background, and meridian is butt ugly. The only good one is the one on the htc hero, but to get it working on a g1, you need an htc hero rom installed, and they are really really really really really really slow.
