Sure it adds cost, but that's kind of the point. I believe laptops (as with cars) are either one of two types: body-on-chassis or monocoque.  This netbook doesn't look like a monocoque design from the two pics - I expect to see an internal plastic frame supporting some components and anchoring to the brushed aluminum cover (to distinguish from 'case' which may be confused with a carrying case).
